Very sad and avoidable state of affairs. Miners canary in full view.
Other areas will follow.
But why do people expect MPI to solve the issue. They wont

Their job is to make sure quota and export orders are filled and thats where it ends. It is very obvious they dont know that much about fisheries. MPI is run by Academics and Government bureaucrats who dont know that much, which is why they work for Government in the first place. And those who do know alot probably dont fit the culture and leave.

Having MPI in charge of fisheries is like having Possums in charge of Native forest conservation.

Hope this is still not being discussed in 10 years time. By then it will be too late. May be too late even now.

When will N.Z learn to stop destructive and unsustainable fishing practice, and enhance and encourage that which is sustainable. That would achieve better export return for longer term.

And when will we learn not to think that export is the only way to earn from fishing. Maybe we need to bring people from overseas to eat the same fish here. And maybe give them opportunity to catch and release a few as a paid for true N.Z experience .
