Anyone tried using an FG knot for joining a heavy mono leader to mono mainline as an alternative to the more traditional windon leader system of mainline double to dacron loop to loop connection ?

Awesome knot with braid, & certainly harder to tie with mono - anyone field tested it ?

Too much stretch imo and agree with Go West, Why?The loop to loop connection is 100% and very thin, FG in mono to mono would be really thick so not for me

Works well for me, I tie it quite often in 40lb mainline to 100lb leader

Well - just thinking outside the box really Gowest, & interested in any constructive feedback whether positive or negative, especially from anyone who has tried it.

It's actually less bulky than a traditional windon (at the thickest point where the loop to loop connection is made), it's faster & with a bit of practice easier than making your own, and is certainly cheaper than buying one.

Seems to run through the roller tip OK, so flexibility doesn't seem an issue, & after bedding the knot down & trimming everything off short, it didn't budge a millimetre with a pretty severe pull test - just like braid.

Finishing it off was a bit tricky - half hitches in mono wouldn't stay tight like they do with braid, & a Rizzuto finish looked ugly & bulked the knot up a lot. A couple of half hitches then whipping the tail with dental floss came out OK.

Good to hear it works for you Makka - I practiced with 50/200lb, & I imagine the smaller size difference with 40/100 would probably be a bit trickier.

Why not ? (genuine question, in mostly lowercase )

I cant see how it would be less bulkier than a windon as the thickest part of the windon leader is where the Dacron/hollow braid slips over the mono leader and then whipped. Maybe your using windons with a thick wax whipping or something. Kavemans windons have a very slim profile and I doubt that 50lb mono over 200ln leader would be thinner than most windons out there. Not sure if its quicker than tying a quick plait then looping a windon through a couple times.

For braid would be all good but not sure about mono. The knot tightens by the braid gripping/clinching the mono if Im not mistaken, mono on mono might not grip to each other like braid would and especially when wet.

We all like to save dollars but for some reason saving dollars on the "cheap" stuff for gamefishing usually ends up in tears LOL windons last quite a while Ive ran mine 2 seasons in a row had no issues.

Good on you for thinking out of the box though. Only way to really see if it would work is try catch a beaky with that system I guess. Give it a go and let us know the results Big smile

Best way to test it, is do your static tests with a line tester, your club should have one, or Pete Saul can probably help you out.

THen go an lean on some kingies with it. If they can't break it, you're probably onto a winner.

I'm with Chad though, it's profile is way bigger than what you'll get with a wind on. If you're chasing the dollar then build your own windons.

If you're hell bent on doing it your way, then test with line tester followed by kingies.
