ok we know that the hauraki gulf is running at 22% biomass and BOP down to 6% Hawkes Bay?
Now is the rebuild about snapper only or does it cover all species?
Snapper to me is a fish we were brought up on but there are far more tastier fish out there,Re build gurnard, trevally, kingfish ,john dory etc
Even Blue cod is making an appearance,
The rebuild needs to consider water filters, mussels cockles pipis tuatua etc right down to crayfish
The issue goes deeper than just banning trawlers/seiners etc it needs to look at environmental issues as well silt sludge motorway / storm water run offs etc   We can create havens for fish to breed but if the environment is not correct what happens to fertilized eggs?

Paul , that's a big can of worms ,but yes ( my opinion ) it should go all the way .
Sea change are I think a first step in addressing all the issues , trying to put it right well that's another story .

Little by little improvements can make a difference .We need to start not talk

Give me a good old KY any day ..easy to catch ,not killing fish for nothing ( catch it keep it )

For all of it to work water quality has to be improved ,mussel beds re established  ,pressure taken of the environment, habitat  and the fish stocks by catching less and killing less

first off i can not find any indication that MPI have altered the
Quota to 3 fish that have never been caught above or up to allowable Quota,

hear is the demise i have, 8 or 9 years from when reviewed we still have no reduction in 3 fish that the Fishing Companies have Quota larger than the take,
in other words the fish are not there to fill those Quota,

every 4 year they have been reviewed 2 times with no changes this indicates
a terrible waste of snapper as they chase the last of 3 species that have never been caught,

Gurnard - John Dory - Trevally. virtually all from inside SNA01.

if we can reduce the Quota to half what they are now, then we will save sh^tloads of snappers being dumped which would not have to be caught........

my problem is rebuilding of stock is all about snapper, never do other spcies get mentioned.Snapper to me is not a primary fish,it is a fish that once was prolific around the gulf in various sizes. It is a fish that those over 50?were brought up on and other species were regarded fish bait/cat food.East coast gurnard are there but not in numbers and certainly not west coast sizes, will swap a snapper for gurnard any day.Trevaly/kahawai 2 very versatile fish for many uses, trevaly I have found over the years to be a maximum of 45cm with the occasional bigger fish but not in great numbers unless fishing along the coromandel mussels farms. JD few and far between. Dare I say some species unfortunatly have to caught bt net/set net moki etc(guilty your honour brought a nice bit blue moki smoked).

A mate of mine, many years ago, a snapper longliner, said that rec fishermen should open their eyes, all they talked about were snapper....of which there were plenty according to him, while the gurnard had damn near disappeared.
Now he says the same about pink maomao too, and other reef species.
The huge Trevally schools were wiped out by the gill netters decades ago as well.
But snapper is all recs seem to care about. Like others, personally I don't really rate snapper at all, gimme a kingi any day.

Dead right.....that seems unbelievably bad management.

A very good starting point for PJC's rebuild would be - Nathan Guy -

Has anyone from this site contacted him directly ( perhaps a constituent  from his electorate) and asked him the 5 simple questions?

IMO this Mr Guy is getting away with a - NO SHOW - he would fail a KPI.

I say that the starting point of a - rebuild - is to get the authorities to acknowledge the problem then they present a timeline with a feasible plan for the restructuring of the NZ fisheries.

This government MUST start by acknowledging the issues.

No mowerman, you are wrong once again....sheeeesh.......kingies are way better than kahawai, fight better, and when filleted and prepared properly, don't taste like fish hardly at all, which is the BEST type of fish! Lol.

 - MPI is the governments executioner, they verify and sign off the growing conditions of stock and the processing  ( killing of) They have generations of experience in this administration so the likely hood of successfully negotiating a reasonable outcome on fishing catches, discussing sustainability and rebuilding programmes will almost certainly fall on deaf ears! MPI about taking not giving.

MPI directly or indirectly oversea's the following "kills".

Poultry - ( superbug cover up and battery farming)
Pork Industry - (battery farming still okayed in NZ)
Bobby Calf - annual kill of 100s of thousands of 10 day old calves.
Meat industry - and all it entrails.
Fishing Industry - massive by-catch wastage, reef fishing, scallop dredging, all types of netting, species extinction, leaseholding to foreign vessels, the management of a corrupted QMS.....goes on.

So remember guys any representatives sitting at the negotiating table from MPI will be rather "special" types of people, you'd better be really tuff to win under those conditions!.
