Is it a question or a statement? The BMX is an Avet MX. They have one major issue: if you fish them at more than about 10lb of drag you will nuke the pinion bearing, making the reel feel like a pepper grinder. This is compounded by the fact that they're a US reel, and finding a nice imperial stainless steel bearing to replace the dead one might be tricky - although you could try the NZ Avet importer (not 100% sure who that is) They are nicely built, all billet alloy and stainless steel. If you buy them at $299 (which is the price marine-deals has on them at the moment) they are pretty good buying. Keep an eye on the reel foot if it only has 2 screws in it rather than the newer 6 (I think?) screw style. As for the best overhead strayline reel? Kinda subjective but it'll do a nice job of it, especially if you like/need lever drag.

I'd rather have an Avet MX Raptor so I could fish more drag without the bearing dieing. There's quite a few reels I would rate over the BMX... does it have to be lever drag? Shimano Talica. Trinidad, maybe even a Torium for durability Daiwa Saltiga and Saltist, plus the SL20SH and SL30SH are awesome strayline reels... Okuma Andros or a small Makaira, even the new Solterra SLX as a budget option Maxel Hybrid Fin-Nor Marquesa Penn Torque, Fathom Avet MX Raptor

Surely Daiwas SL30H would have to be the "Baitrunner" of overheads!?

lever drags have half the working parts and a drag the size of the spool than a star drag.
that makes for easy servicing not that servicing often is really necessary on a leveler drag,
what line weight would also help in determining which reel is better,
what line weight are you likely to use
inside a star drag real,

Does casting distance matter to you? if so a star drag will generally cast further. Also i had a Penn squall 12, casts very well and the cast control knob on the side is priceless and it handled a few good fish untill it went for a swim with my trophy king, replaced it with the penn fathom 12 and it casts even better but to change the spool resistance is done by opening the sideplate. Still easy just not conveniant. both spooled with 20lb mono and cant fault either reels
Hope this helps

I own a couple of toriums and okuma cortez for straylining snapper and have always stood by the toriums as solid reels..... however... i have acquired a new shimano star 20/40s (japan) and put it through its paces at great barrier over the long weekend.
It is a fantastic reel and early indications (decent snapper and kingfish) suggest it is going to outperform all of my other reels. My new favourite. Love it

To be honest I'd probably grab a Daiwa SL20SH, put a carbontex drag kit in it for $20, spend the rest on bait and petrol using it.

Yeah agree on the Sloshy's have to be the best bang for $ reel for straylining I reckon. And I don't think the more expensive models can match them overall. Other reel I like are the Abu's great casters.

Have avet sx nice little reel but not castable vs diawa 20 size or sl diawa models. One is work of art suited to straylning in current, light trolling,or jigging vertically the other ( the diawa and other shimanos) will flick light baits out wide and fire out poppers and surface lures some distance plus do the above. One is a true fishing tool the other something that is pleasurable to fish with in certain fishing applications. I love my sx and would ( on back of its performance on kings etc) consider avet hw 4/0 as good option for light tackle (15kg fine diameter or braid) marlin reel for which 10kg drag is unnecessary. They have great reputation in states but perhaps not so designed for stand and deliver on kings. Suggest if you haven't looked already the "charkbait" website for specs and applications.

Yep Daiwa SL 20s and 30s can't be beaten for straylining. Only just changed the one I bought in 1990 to carbontex. In reality it was only the red washer between the anti-reverse and the main gear that needed replacement. The drags they come with are fine for 10kg. The original from 1990 must have caught literally thousands of fish and is still going strong.

I recently purchased a Poseidon 150 for this purpose and have found it the bees knees, first trip out I dealt to fish which have been giving me grief in the past, for most people I would probably suggest going with a 200 over the 150, and its only suitable if you're stray lining braid, as they are a small reel, but beaut size and lots of hurt can be applied.
for the record I have been using, Shimano Curado 300, Okuma Komodo 364, Shimano Tyrnos 8, Penn Lethal LD15 & SD12, and for me, the 150 is the best points of all these reels rolled into one.

thanks for feedback and opinions guys but i think the winner by unanimous decision is the daiwa sloshy now for a sweet rod to match daiwa vip or kilwell or another for the purpose of straylining ?

I don't reckon the rod makes much difference for straylining, Ok don't buy a broom stick. Baits are heavy enough that just about anything will cast them, but I do like rods about 7 feet long, even though the one I use is just under 8.
Don't believe all the bollocks about sensitivity etc. For Real straylining you have the rod pointed at the bait and you're detecting bites and working your bait through your thumb and fingers.
The rods you have mentioned will be fine, but again anything around the 7 foot mark with enough guides for an overhead will be fine especially for 10Kg.

If you're keen on the sloshy I'd be keeping a look out for a sloshy/vip combo for sure. Should be able to get a better price on a combo rather than buying individually.

yep get the sloshy/vip combo, one of the best combos you can get for straylining. I've got the 15-40lb vip but id probably go for the 12-30lb if strictly fishing 10kg. i use 10, 15 and 24kg on mine and its sweet but for the lighter stuff the other vip wold be mint

Should say my above comments on avet sx vs diawa were based on used to own use of diawa sl and more recently purchased avet sx. Gave my diawa sl 20 away to Gofish reel guy - Will - which has been refurbished into something even more amazing. Now that sl 20 was 2nd hand to me from the best rock fisherman in aukland , most probably NZ. Caught lots of 20 plus snapper and few big kings for me but even more for PR. Such is quality of these reels. When I had it was a boat fishin reel mainly paired to a 6 to 10 kg rods either short berkly black rod with perfection guides or live fibre 6-8 kg. Was awesome, don't put it on a limp soft rod. Needs to be on rod with power. As reel has serious guts.

Some of newer lighter jig rods are quite incredible in terms of action even in strayline situations and if landbased ther are some newer better options as well.

Either the penn squall or fathoms in the 12-15 sizes...
Both reels cast better than an SL, Both reels have more drag and smoother drag and are factory with carbon washers. Both reels run an anti reverse bearing and run dogs, Brass main and stainless pinion (Sl does as well). Both reels run a fully disengaging spool shaft, have cast control, Sl doesn't. The squall has a reinforced V frame and is graphite vs the Fathom that runs a metal body. The SL is old and in need of an up date and doesn't perform to the same level as the newer penns. I have owned all 3, Sl does the job but is a very basic reel.

TLD 10 if you can find a good one. Love the light clicker. Does not scare the snapper on the take. If the daiwa SL20SH had a lighter clicker I'd rate it up with the best as well as are great to cast nice drag and last forever with minimal care.

100 % Daiwa4lyfe !
Run 3 x 20SLSHB with 4-6 kilo mono 2 x 30SLSHB with 8 kilo mono
Best bang for buck overhead but miss the goldy colours- i fish these way more than a Trini 10a- which have found drag and prespool tension is too sensitive and has a design flaw on the spool edge which is gapped and ultra light mono can 'bind in ' have lost the whole rig casting a few times when it overloads. Never had an issue with Daiwas, also the free spool clickers on the daiwas is just right for a fish to pick up bait and hoon off without any over runs.

I'm getting there bro...learning from the great Pro Fish. I might have to change my name to Bro fish with the hori rigs I have at the moment haha. We shall give that SLX a good blast hopefully when we are out next. I'll chuck that suffix 16 lb mono on and bless her....I'm still crying over that mystery monster I lost on the 6lb 😭😭

you should try putting a 300 sized bait caster or 350 sized and then try straylining with it, you will get a new appreciation for modern fishing technology.
