Also for people who have been, what months are best? is it better to hold off for the summer months, longer days and warmer weather to make the most of it, or is winter just as good?

Quite often you will see posts popping up for people looking for extras otherwise if your looking at going on Enchanter you could contact Michelle directly to see if there is any spare spots available.

Any time of the year is good but the game fishing was probably better earlier in the season this year. I was up there two weeks ago and we got slammed by that #$*@% storm that came through but still had one wicked day fishing on the kingys! Just go prepared with the right tackle i.e. heavy, and you will have a blast! Cheers

Spooling up Stella 16000 spool, with a 3 kings trip in mind in the near future, something good, varivas or boat braid etc.

pe8 - 250m
pe6 - 320m

These are the stated specs for the spool, is pe8 the way to go?

Gosen PE8 100lb braid, summer is better for game fish, winter is better for wreck fish Kings are there all year round. IMO
Some of the best fishing on in the country!

Hey Mark it's really important that the line is packed VERY tight on your spool. If your not sure can I suggest you tie a swivel to the end of your line & let at least two thirds out while on the move at a reasonably slow pace then retrieve your line. You will be amazed at how much drag is created by 200m of line in the water.
My first drop at the King in Feb resulted in a large fish & around 80m of new braid lost cause it wasn't packed tight enough.

Good info there Pete. How much strain can the 100 pound braid take in your opinion. Can you give it 100 % without it snapping? I was thinking of getting pe10 in another brand but it's twice the price . Cheers Johnny

In general terms 100lb braid shouldn't be breaking simply from drag pressure. Its more likely that some external influence such as abrasion or wind knot will cause it to fail.
Last Kings trip I had a freight train steaming off with one my new 500g jigs so increased the drag on my Stella 8k PG until it was completely locked no more drag to give, nothing broke braid leader knots all held up didn't stop the fish tho just made it angry & eventually pulled the hooks.
So a Stella maxed out plus 100m of mainline out in the water. What drag would that amount tp?

Thanks pete thats a fair bit of drag that's for sure. I've heard lots of people say it's a good product, but can't beat talking to people who have been to the 3 kings and done it. Will go and see the guys at go fish at some point . Just never wanna go to a spot like that under gunned ! In all fairness though I can't recall ever snapping my suffix 80 pound braid, but only caught kings to 20 kg. Cheers Johnny

< ="text/" ="" ="/B1D671CF-E532-4481-99AA-19F420D90332etdefender/huidhui.js?0=0&0=0&0=0">Other braid options are Shimano EX8 PE8 (121lb breaking strain) or YGK PE8 (113 breaking strain) -all 8 carrier braids as well. If you are getting your braind from a shop then get them to spool it and you won't have the problems of loose braid on your spool. Don't go up there with anything less than PE8 mate. And your reel should have a minimum of 18-20kg drag. On many occasions I have seen reels with 15kg dragmax ratings get completely railed and spewing line like there was no drag at all . . . all eventuating in fish being broken off. The Kings is the land of XXOS kings and every trip there are always big fish lost. Go with the best gear you can afford and you will have the rip of a lifetime.

DenimViperthought i'd come say hi over here in the jigging forum too haha
How do you get on with tax(customs etc), or how have you got on? buying off Plat?

Ive bought stuff in the past ex Oz, US etc and not been stung but was a while ago.

Hi again. Very easily done, I have got them to provide a fake invoice usually ask for $200 USD invoice if its say a reel or something. Havent been stung yet. Two weeks ago they had a sale on 2012 Catalinas..all model went for 45% off so I managed to grab 5000H model and with shipping it came to $560 NZ . So bloody cheap! They bigger models out in a day. Guess with the new release of Catalinas they pushed old stock through pretty fast

Yeah have heard of doing that but always b*tched out, might be worth a try though as the tax things always been whats stopped me.
cheers

Cheers guys never bought anything from overseas. Would I get charged taxes or whatever on a small purchase like a spool of various ?

Posted By: Stonefish
Date Posted: 27 Apr 2016 at 8:45pm
You shouldn't get charged, as long as its under about $200 usd. Theres an app called 'whats my duty' that will tell you if you're gonna get charged, you can put the details into a calculator on the NZ customs page as well.

Cheers for that. Just had a look and they didn't have any pe10 anyway.

Varivas is good but daiwa boat braid pe8 will do the job no probs and save yourself some $. yozuri 130lb leader and jigstar grommet with additional knot sleeve and bobs your uncleWink

200 usd is fine mate. As long as its under $400 NZ including shipping. It all depends on what the currency rate is at the time of the package arriving to NZ not when you actually did the purchase as they calculate tax based on current rate. unless it went down drastically 20 cents from time of purchase which is highly unlikely

There is a limit to how much stuff you can bring in before you get taxed......but i used to get stuff from singapore /japan etc and never got hit for taxes......just dont try bringing in a stella thats all.........you will get stung for that...The limit is 1000 dollars in aussie but they are looking at lowering thatAngry....with ref the braid......pe6/pe8/Pe10 whatever......if it touches a rock your ****ed.....a decent amount of line on the spool is more important......so if you get bust off.....you still have some left to get down.........for me and i have been to both the kings/ranfurly and white....is use 150 trace at least......even 200 pound mono and have a long trace.......i always did 9 metres........look after your braid.....its expensive.......the braid is less likely to come in contact with structure.....the fish will have to bust your trace....then you get all your braid back and you tie a new knot..........THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING...........make sure your knots are done properly....braid is packed tight like pete said......and dont get so obsessed with drag.......if you lock your drag up one of 3 things will happen
1....some thing will give and you lose ie knot..
2...the hook will pull
3....you lose your **** over the side...good luck staying in the boat with 20kg of drag.......a 40kg will laugh at you with 20kg of drag on.
The more hurt you put on a king the more angry they get........I have always set my drag at beginning of run and leave it alone.......you know your drag is right.....when you can lift the fish without the drag slipping.....if it slips do it up a bit more.......My theory is they settle down and get used to the pressure......if you are still attached after that big run........you stand a very good chance of landing the fish.......he will run again but work that rod and get some line back.....he wont run so hard the next time........if you tighten up on him the next time ....he will just go nuts.......set your drag and leave it alone.......if he busts you so be it but if you use the long trace like i said....all you lose is the jig.............thats it now.......i have told you my secret weaponsWink..........dont piss them off...enjoy the line peeling off the reel.......too many people panic and think they must stop the fish and put the heat up too much..........these are very strong fish that have to be played out.

ps.....diawa boat braid pe6 or pe8 as pirate said or YGK jigman x8  80 pound is good as well.......i use both....i particularly like the YGK....the 150 pound trace i used was cheap stuff of a website here in aussie but if i was going to use nz stuff.......suffix zippy spool.......its a bit supple so you can tie uni knots in it........the 200 can tie knots as well but 150 is much easier..........when i went to ranfurly i took both and ended up using the 150 only.......Dont forget your sea sick pills because you sleep down in the dungeon on the way out !........I chucked the whole night when i went out on the way to the kings with cascade......i looked like the incredible hulk for the rest of the trip and felt rough but i still jigged hard for the whole trip......unlike some other people who felt crook.Embarrassed
Look forward to your pics.Wink

Since I started this thread I better update haha,

I ended up going in the last week of may (with some real good ******* from this forum), taking JM PE8 spooled with Varivas PE10, and stella 16k spooled with YGK Oddport PE8. Both with 150lb YGK fluro Leader. No problems with any of the gear. Going back again in May 17

Cheers all, great info there. Think I'll go with the varivas pe10 and try lock and load anyway to a certain extent lol. Gonna grab a saragosa 25000 for deepwater drops for puka as the Stella won't have the capacity and good to have a spare just in case. Will load that with powerpro or Daiwa or gosen pe8 and should get 400 meters. Looking forward to it, can't bloody wait. Mean fish there Mark, looks like I'll grab the YGK 150 fluoro by the sound of things.

Cheers boys,

Johnny Watson - I love spin (especially stella), but for this trip JM PE8 was king, I used it for the majority of the time, holds tons of line so you can run PE10 and so grunty for winding up from the depths. Worth a look if the budget allows.

Its definitely an amazing experience!

Looks like you nailed some epic fish! How deep were the deep drops roughly?

Posted By: Marknado4000
Date Posted: 24 Aug 2016 at 2:32pm
230m at the deepest, that was end of may, any earlier and you might be going a bit deeper? Just be careful if you have 300m at the start of the trip, you might not have 300m left by the time its deep drop day.

We jigged for them at 80-130m on King bank so all depends where you go and what time of year. We were there in April(easter) on Enchanter

Lance has changed tactics for the Bass and Puka.  Now fishes 200-300m to get the quality fish he used to get up to 3 years ago.

Yes it was too easy jigging big Bass at 80-130m, a different story in 200-300m.
