A good mate of mine Scott Heywood and three mates shot out of west haven inlet south of fairwell spit yesterday to catch bluecod and crayfish as you do down there .they went south once over the bar and steamed down to kaharangi reef where they caught a feed of cod then went into the light house for a dive the water was west coast brown and 16degrees 15m deep .Scotty was putting on his tank and a stripe Marlin tailed past they took off after it putting a Marlin lure that he brought 6 years ago after coming out with me onto his grouper rod tld25 towed it in front of it it lit up smoked the lure on its second shot and took off jumping around sea 50 minutes later they traced it gaff in and its now hanging in his Apple cool store in motueka . I must say Scotty is an exceptional hunter gatherer but this is extraordinary he would be the only bluecod fisherman with a sharp hooked Marlin lure in his tackle box down there !!!well done mate!!!

Onya guys ! Yea, plenty of anecdotal stuff from due east of you over Kapiti way. They're where you find em. I've had plenty of arches when trolling Albies over here hard in, but never had the rods to handle them. Have geared up for this year. To get a hit that close is insane coz it would have run like mofo on steroids. Unreal. |

That is awesome, well done to those guys, looks a good size fish to. Here is a link to a thread from 2005 talking about marlin off Westport Greymouth and all the way down to Jacksons Bay. one was hooked two years ago in Tasman Bay but not landed. Fisherman report yearly about them being at the back of Farewell Spit and i know there has been a few caught on the westcoast side about where this one was caught but nothing for quite a few years now. When we went chasing Blue Fin Tuna on Cova Rose with Chinner a few years ago he said there is a great untapped fishery off the westcoast of the South Island up between Westport and Farewell Spit there is a great sea valley (about 60 nm northwest of Westport) that comes in there with heaps of bigggg broadies he said and he has seen numerous marlin there as well. I would also expect there is probably Southern Bluefin Tuna in the area during summer/autumn as well. The only problem is it is a hard and unforgiving place to get to.

| not really that hard to get to. Just book a ticket tow your boat down there and go fishing. Have mates in a pursain boat and they see plenty of marlin in the Hokitika trench late in the season. Good luck |
