i have a shimano xitus 6-10kg rod with a 12000D bait runner with 50lb braid and 100lb leader. Is my rod not suited to the reel set up i have and also will my rod handle a decent size kingfish ? (20kg)

Put it this way.... you'll never break your line. I'm not going to say it won't handle a 20kg King but you will have a nightmare of a time trying to stop it if it's over a reef. Those reels can produce quite a lot of drag pressure (24lb or something) and your braid will be fine but your rod will turn into a 2-piece model if you try and put that much hurt on with it. edit: I have a 6-10kg Backbone Elite (basically the same rod) and it gets scary bent dead-lifting all of 3kg. Meaning that's about the maximum useful drag you can run, which is just right for 10kg line.

What has been posted is true, another way of putting it is that the rod is the limiting factor on that set. You really need a higher rated rod to take advantage of that reel and line rating. ------------- Best gurnard fisherman in my street |

Hey otaki do you still have your shimano xitus rod? Would you be interested in selling it? Mine snapped, not on a fish either. Wanting a rod for parts Cheers |
