Hi,
Id like to get into mechanical jigging and would love advice on a solid but no frills set up for approx $500. I'll be fishing from a surtees 4.85

Question 1. Overhead vs spin reel? for example  Finnor Marquesa MA16 vs Finnor Lethal LT100 or OF 8500 (which has massive 45lb of drag) . Ideally I would like to be able to use any reel bought to live bait and even cast stick baits too so am tempted by a spin reel. Finnor Lethal spin reals seem like a bargain but will the lower retrieve ratio mean they're much harder work for vertical jigging.

Question 2. Which jigging rod? obviously needs to match the reel (overhead vs spin). tempted by Finnor Troppo sticks 5'6"

Q3. I already have aiwa GS9 spin reel (10kg drag). Could I use this up for stick baiting etc and then go for an overhead reel for jigging.

Newbie to this so any sensible advice appreciated Big smile .

Cheers

Shredder

Fin Nor lethal100 is one of the best value reels. It was fully reviewed by one of the world's great spin reel reviews AlanHawk, and received high mark. Review link    http://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/lth10.html

Fin Nor Offshore series are solid yet heavy reels, but it has no instant anti-reverse. So it might not be a good choice for jigging.  I have lethal100 (840g), offshore9500(around 1100g), Quantum cabo 120 (around 940g). ( I guess I've got T.A.S......)

From Alan Hawk, quantum cabo 120 would cast better for stick baits. For jigging, both lethal and cabo would be good. For top water, they are a little slow, but still can do the job.

Line capacity wise, I am able to put about 220 meter of 80lb daiwa x8 J braid on my lethal 100.  While the cabo 120 would probably hold around 400-500 mether of the same line.

Both of them have solid structure/gears, and would fight our kingies beautifully.

My brother jigs with a fin nor lethal 100 and Smith AMJ 52EX. Nice ratio for jigging. And good for gulf of Mexico Amberjacks up to 80lbs and groupers.

Thanks for responses. I realized my strange British preference to wind with my left hand and hold rod with my right meant a spin reel would be the way forward. Very tempted by the lethal 100 but in the end went for the Quantum Cabo 120 as recommended by Jamiez ( thanks heaps) and a troppo stick can't wait till it arrives! Ordered from Paul's fishing and got a good deal however subsequently found the cabo for $170 less in Australia!!!! Bugger
