Hi everyone. I'm knew here. I have a Stella 14000SW-B and I intend to spool it with DAIWA UVF SALTIGA 8Braid PE#4. Since I'm also knew to jigging (few trips), my question is: how should I spool the reel? Should I use a monofilament backing? Is it better to use a monofilamente backing? If yes, then what should be the lenght and diameter (mm) of the backing monofilament? Or I shouldn't use backing line and should put the braid directly? Sorry for all those questions... Thanks in advance.
Best cumpliments for everyone Pedro Tomás -> Azores Portugal

No need for mono on spool, use piece of electrical tape on spool and tie an arbor knots straight to spool. Make sure braid is packed on tight otherwise braid can dig into the spool and bust you off Good fishing Kevin

Yep what Kev said but would go to your local tackle store & get them to spool it up using their machine OR if you do spool it yourself on your first trip out let the line out at reasonable low speed then wind it back on the reel with the resulting pressure it will spool up good n tight BUT don't attach anything to the end of the line or it will create line twist in your braid.

If you do spool up with braid, and after putting the whole spool on there is still space left, then it is a good idea to put mono on. Best to go with a similar diameter as your braid imo.
<Edited to add:> I mean underneath. Fill up with mono on top of the braid and then take it all off and put on backwards. Extra effort but saves money on braid. I always back with mono anyway as I trust my joining knots more than a bit of tape. But that's just me.

watch out putting a twist in your braid when spooling spinning reels, especially serious reels like 10k or bigger, line spooling machines can do a much better job

Thanks for the advise guys. What do you guys call "puting a twist"?? Doesn't the line always twists around itself?? About the spooling machines...I'm in the Azores, you won't find those here, I'm almost 100% sure... =P

Do the drag up tight when you spool the braid, if you turn the handle on a spinning reel and no line in coming onto the reel, every wind of the handle will put a twist in the braid(same thing when a fish is taking line against drag, dont turn the handle) Overheads are way easier in this regard. Hope this helps

and make sure the spool you are taking it off is rolling not just sitting on its side with the line coming off one side.

Its easier at a shop(they will often look after you from their bulk spools)......they just need the spool and can put it on a machine............it needs to be put on tight or the braid could dig into itself.....resulting in a bust off.......Dont overfill the spool either leave a 1 or 2 mm lip....or a bit more to allow for your leader. You can do either.....the tape as Kevin says or use mono...............mono has its place.......It prevents line slip and also for Eg.......if your spool could hold 350 metres of the braid you wish to use...........you could backfill with mono............so that you can get a 300 metre spool of your favorite braid on it....with no wastage..........when you have been bust off a lot Lol or your braid is old.............you just take off the ****y braid and can fill from the same location from the mono.....I like it that way...........the only exception is reels that are braid only reels like the shimano ocea jigger 4000P for example.

Best to wind line on to reel under tension, getting spin reel spoiled on a machince can have an expensive down side. With modern reels the ocsilation of the spool lays the line on the spool in a such a way as to avoid line digging in to the spool, this also has a decisive impact on the amount of line that goes on the spool. Now here is the down side to spooling on the machine, it has happened to me and couple of mates, you go to the shop, buy a spin reel, get it filled with braid, which is masterfully done, "managed to get 250mtrs on the spool", gee i thought the reel said it only took 180mtrs (1st red flag), take reel for a fish, first cast and suddenly the spool looks like its got more line, (2nd red flag), the next cast massive wind knot, untangle/cut 20/30mters, cast again, and reel looks full again, cast again wind knot, cut off another 20/30mtrs. At which point i went and hooked line with swivel to tree and walked of all the line, when i wound the line back on i had to cut another 10-15mters off!!! In my case it was freshwater lure fishing, and i was able to work around it, had to throw away $40 worth of braid, my cobber had it with his jigging out fit, did a deep drop for puka and found he stiil had 70mtrs of line out when his reel was fill!

interesting southern wanderer....what you say makes sense.....as the line you cast will not come back onto the spool as tight as it would have been wound on in the shop.....you will get the same effect if you wind the braid tight....onto your own reel... I have fished deep with braid and have never had extra line when i have brought it up or had extra line after i have cast..............only two things i can think off.........the braid was packed under extreme tension in the shop....which is not needed....(just tight), maybe the braid is absorbing water and swelling..........ie the quality of the braid used..........Another reason not to overfill your spools.............I have used ygk jigman x 8/ultra /varivas Gt and castman/tas white line/spiderwire/diawa boat braid/Finns/Berkley to name a few and have never had what you describe but its interesting to hear.......overly compacting the braid onto the spool is my theory anyway hahahah.......The bit you mention about your spool taking more than it says can happen quite easily.............different thickness lines from different manufacturers.........one companies pe5 could be the same thickness as a Pe3 from another....so it could say blah blah metres of PE5 cpacity on your spool but the line you are putting on is the thickness of PE3.. Tasline all white series is good for this !.....hence the more capacity.....thats my 2 cents worth anyway.................sure someone else will have some thoughts on the subject.

did the shop remove spool from the reel and fill with some type of drill setup? sounds like it's been spooled like a cotton reel , not laying the line as a spin reel does. Would account for the extra line apon retrieve.

In both the instance described the reels where spooled on a machine, both looked like the line had gone on like a spool of cotton. The machine saves time, but does not spool a spin correctly.
