I am interested in everyone's opinions on outboards.
What sort of fuel economy do people get with their outboards?
me - amf580/130yam2st - 11 L/hour (trolling)
 
And every now and then you hear of these yarns about certain outboards pulling fish and some that don't?
 
I know people will talk about the harmonics of the motor etc... but what are the best and worst outboards you have come across for marlin?
 
There was a story going around whiti of a trailer boat who were very successful.  They upgraded the motor to the next size up, and couldn't catch a cold. So they went back to the original size and started catching fish again.
 
Thoughts???

not personally used one but it seems that those opti max mercs seem to be good fish attractors

TomW I also have a AMF580 but with a Suzuki 115 4 stroke on the back. I troll at around 6 knots and use about 7-8 l/hr. Try to go any faster and fuel consumption goes up quickly for very little increase in speed. I am looking at trying a slightly bigger prop next year to see if I can get the same trolling speed with less revs and hence less fuel consumption.

Oh yeah honda 90 and 5.5 surtees. I can happily troll 8 -9knotts all day and do better then a 1L per 1nm.

7m marco with 200 honda

I like to troll at 2400 but im burning 11-13l/h and im doing around 7.5-8knts and seem to raise a lot at that speed 

but if i drop down to 2200 and doing around 6.5-7knts i only burn 8-9L/h 

I like going faster but will try a bit slower next year as a massive difference in gas. hard to change what works though

Extreme 610 game king 175 Suzuki depending on conditions between 7-13 lph probably av 9 LPH @ 7 to 8 knots seemed to raise plenty last season both marlin & YFT just couldn't keep them on the hook Angry

625 Bonito with a Suzuki 140 4 stroke great on gas for a heavy glass boat. We do 6.5-7knt and burn about 7-8lt/hr.
 
Raised 19 stripes that we seen in 10 days trolling so yes she raises the fish no probs
 
Also had the sounds pumping, DOOF DOOF or heavy metal Cool

150 Suzuki 4 stroke on a 6.1 Surtees, so theoretical hull speed of just over 6 knots. 2000rpm about 6.7 knots = 7-8 litres/hour. 2200rpm just over 7 knots, fuel burn up to about 9-10.
I now trim the motor almost all the way down - way lower than planing trim. Probably gives a few extra inches of waterline length, but can't really say it makes any difference to the speed or economy. What it does do is create a lot less turbulence behind the boat - I wonder if the white water/looks like a school of fish theory is necessarily desirable, at least with short outboard driven trailer boats.

FC500 with 60 Merc 4-stroke - 4 blade prop.
 
4.3 - 5.0 lph at 7-8mph, goes up to 6lph max if wind and swell together.  
 
The hull has an unusual characteristic in that it stays with a flat attitude through to planning speed. It does not have the hump when moving from displacement speed to on the plane that most hulls have. There is no appreciable increase in miles per litre when going past displacement speed either. It makes for economical game trolling.

Most props are designed for higher rpms/ speed...and higher rpms/ speed less slip,  more slip lower down. Hence why Joker above with his 4 blade (or larger diameter/ cupping has so much less slip bottom end... combine that with slightly higher pitch and things get even better.

stabi 589 ,yam 115 four stroke , 3 pob and allot of gear, use 7.5-8 lph at 6.5-7 knots at the sweet spot 2400 rpm

Hi Tom,
I ponder over the affectivity of outboards v diesel, 4 stroke v 2 Stroke all the time, the guys running Diesels seem to be catching fish all the time but is it the motor or are they out there twice as much being more dedicated to the sport? 
 
My experience with 2 strokes and Harmonic's has lead me to the conclusion that you just have to be where the fish are in the first place to raise them.  Our Surtees is running a Evinrude ficht that is somehow still going after a thrashing 13yrs later. It trolls at about 6.5-7.5 knots and 9-10l an hour.
 
It took me a few hours on the water but the first fish I ever hooked on it was trying to eat the bungee 6ft from the transom, You could have gaffed it!  We had a double up this year that also had a fish right in behind the boat so they obviously don't mind the sound, but I definitely wouldn't call the boat a fish magnet.  I say all this as I'm currently looking a getting a 4 stroke bolted on the back! The hours on the water are just some much more comfortable without the old two strokes banging away in your ears.
 
I had a little stabi with a Mercury Opti for last summer, only did one day on it out the Manukau but bagged a fish slow trolling a livey so they mustn't mind the Optis either.
