I would like to pick your collective brains and draw upon your combined experience of things GPS.

If I am able to convince Erindoors that I desperately need a handheld GPS as a Christmas present (to find my way around the garden as I rarely get out in the boat!), which unit should I select for her to give me as a surprise?

It should be not too expensive, reasonable battery life, maps would be nice but probably not affordable, water proof (of course!) and idiot proof.

Any suggestions please?

Chris

I was discussing the same subject with the man at ENL midwek coz I'm after one as well. Basically the map units are of little value in handhelds for boaties , the maps have to be bought seperatly $350 and the display size is too small to give you any real sense of a physical relationship to your position.ie unless they are on a 4" x4"  screen minimum there is too much information on screen.

I'm looking for a garmin76 or a 72. Just bear in mind that with a handheld you'll end up buying a mount and an external power cable as well which will add another $120 to the price.

For the most basic, A to B, non-marine chart capable unit - try the yellow ETREX from Garmin. Light, small, idiot & Water(to 1m) proof. Ideal for low level use for waypoints, speed, trip info etc.

Head over to http://www.gps.org.nz">NZ Recreational GPS Society there's a recreational GPS section to the forums there.

I just recently bought the new Garmin GPS60. $400 from Bay Marine Electronics in Tauranga or $398 from Dick Smith Electronics.

It worked out to be as cost effective as the Etrex because it came already packaged with the PC interface cable and waypoint & route management software, which are expensive optional accessories on the Etrex. The bonus is that the PC interface is USB, not a slow serial interface.

It's built like the proverbial shytehouse with a solid rubber armorized case, lanyard, and detachable belt clip. It's got an IPX-7 waterproof rating.

Grounded IMO it is best if you have a mounting kit for it if you are using it in your own boat, it will get knocked around less and easier to use while motoring.

I have had 2 Magellans. My current one is a Sportrack. Large screen, waterproof and 9 customizable screens.

The main screen that I use is the digital screen. This display has 4 readouts on it in big numbers: Bearing, Heading, Speed and distance to waypoint. With this screen all you need to do is ensure that the bearing and heading are the same and your'e on course, simple.

I have found the Garmen 72 to be great easy and simple to use and read good for story your X Spots etc.

If my fishing buddy can use one any one can - Just make sure you dont sit it upside down like some people :-}

Shimma I have the Garmin  GPS 2+ ( which is the same as the Garmin 12 GPS ) but the next model up . Been a good unit and never let me down , I ve taken it on charter boats etc.. to log the extra spots . I still use it on my boat and others as a backup. I also use for my work and it is invaluable . I'm looking to upgrade for a colour unit next ( later in  the year ) .

I use a Garmin 12XL (same as the 12, only it has external aerial which can be run outside the cabin) The beauty of the 12xl over the 12 is that it feeds happily off 12v, so no battery hassles

Definitely a workhorse rather than a flashy unit, but the main data page contains all the numbers I need, also has audible alarms for arrival at waypoint, proximity to hazards (you need to enter these as waypoints) or if you drift off course.

Been seriously looking at getting a voyager for the Yak, just a matter of convincing Santa. Would also be interested in hearing if anyone else has used these...

Cheers
