Having just returned from a holiday overseas on Thursday night and then working 58 hours from Friday to Tuesday I was ready for some time on the water! After spending most of the summer chasing marlin it was a bit of a treat to load the boat for a soft bait mission, one rod and a chilly bin!  We headed out from Maraetai at the gentlemanly hour of 10am. What a day, weather was perfect, flat as and hot! Made our way out in to the firth and spotted these guys playing around...  After watching them for a while we decided to carry on and find the snapper, didn't get much further before we came across these guys....  Hundreds of dolphins all over the place, I will try and get a video sorted once I figure out a few technical issues! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3N-6SCBJrOA" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3N-6SCBJrOA These fellas soon took refuge under the boat  Made for some great close up displays as the dolphins would crash through them right under the boat and the odd gannet would get keen and dive right next to us, we were there for a good half hour watching this. I've seen work ups before but this was awesome! Turns out someone forgot to tell the snapper what was going on as they didn't seem to be around so I decided to head off and find them. Arrived at my spot and it was on like donky kong! Only ripple was where the braid entered the water!  14 of these bad boys..   Back in by 2pm, whacked the fillets and heads off and it was beer o clock by 3.30!  A bit of butter and garlic and Mrs Bull was one happy lady!  Totally awesome day! We also had a Hammer Head hanging around the boat giving our snapper a hurry up as we pulled them in but he didn't get any! |

Well done. We were about 7 or 8 miles north of Gannet Rock for the day and really struggled. Got moved on a couple of times by big marauding Kahawai, after hauling in 3 in a row on 4lb braid out of 45 metres you move to ensure you don't catch anymore. Their behaviour once hooked was little unusual as well. I had increased weight to get my softbait to the bottom faster to avoid them but was still hooking them up hard on the bottom. On hookup they were just charging straight to the surface, creating slack line as I couldn't wind the Trini 16 fast enough to keep up, jumping a couple of times then streaking off back to the depths again. Long fight ensued!
