I have a pe4 and synit razar225macx and would highly recommend a set up like it mate. just so light and easy to jig. keep a eye out for 2nd hand things that's how I brought mine and you can save some serious money and being quality brands the things just keep going forever. I think I seen a jm pe4 for sale on here the other day at around 400 that's nearly half the price of a new one. and tell me what else reel you can buy for 400 that so many jiggers highly recommend

I have bought a couple of jig rods off this site that were less than half new price and mint some setups sell very reasonable on here with braid etc ready to fish.
A good setup matters but what I want to add is that after you have done a lot of jigging your rhythm and wind speeds sinc better with your rod and reel and everything gets less tiring.
I can jig longer than I used to with less effort for sure now i have done a ton of it.

it all comes down to your budget. There is 2 types of budget. The one you spend now then upgrade within a short space due to realising it's not up to the job then the budget to get what you actually wanted
Often with kingfish it's better to grab a quality set up from the start
Look at dedicated jigging reels such as jigging master, maxel or accurate and rods from brands such as jigging master, synit, kilwell etc
On Saturday I sat  an okuma rod snap on a 16kg king, and a Daiwa reel have issues that was probably better as a snapper reel previously and saw some cheap braid that was probably breaking well below what it should

Like Fish addiction said, I brought a set which was ok.
went to see Yeehaa and ended up buying a pe4 on a jig master rod great unit with stopping power that many don't have.
Good thing tho is now I have two

And if you buy from a shop make sure u get the coloured braid, something else I learnt after getting the first.

Leening towards  Telica 12 with 70lb coloured braid, 100lb leader, just need to sort a rod

The shimano Talica is a good reel but there is better jigging reels available for the money. That reel would need a longer arm and a change of knob to make it more comfortable for jigging, then it
The spool is also wider so you will have to keep stopping to check your line lay on the spool which is generally not required on the narrow spool reel
Shimano is quality gear but they are probably stronger in other areas than jigging

Yep, agree with this. I initially bought a Fin Nor Marquesa combo as my first jigging set, soon upgraded to Accurate/Synit combo.
I'd recommend heading out with guys that do a bit of jigging, having a crack with their gear and then buying the best you can afford.
Specialised jigging rods/reels definitely make it easier and more comfortable when jigging all day. Keep an eye on this site for decent second hand gear.

Both great points mentioned in the last two posts here.
Talica is a good all rounder but not really a purist jigging reel.
All depends if you want to spend you money on specialist jigging gear or something you will use for other fishing.
I started of with snapped gear really, TLD 25 was good fun but once I used proper jigging gear the difference was amazing, a lot more fluent and rhythmical action and way less fatigue. Went from a TLD 25 then got an Ocea jigger on a 400gm BBE which was great, but now my go to set up if a JM PE4 reel and rod combo. Easy light gear to use all day and enough grunt for decent kings.

Just like the guys said wait for some gear to pop up on here second hand. I got both my OJ and JM reels of here for less than half price of a new one and cant fault either of them.

If I was gonna spend $900 on a specialised jigging reel (the price of a Ocea 4000 on marine deals) I definitely would be looking at something other than Shimano (and yes I have used a Ocea Jigger)

I agree with mosts comments on going with specialised gear. But a lot of it comes down to what you can afford, how often you will use it and where you will be fishing. Not really much point getting spending $1000 on a combo if you then have no money for food. I aways say buy the best you can afford to, also leaving money for line, jigs hooks etc. Secondly if your average fish is in the 10-15 kilo range where you normally fish, you probably don't need to go out and get the biggest combos out there. lighter gear is getting more refined these days and will handle bigger fish then you expect it to.

Synit 150 would handle 300g jigs Mathew, but that would be getting close to its limit (maybe Graeme will see this post)

In the depth that has been stated their would be nothing wrong with a Trinidad 16na loaded with PE5 !!

I fish 250's with it.  would jig a 300 but that is at your own risk.  200's are fine for anything up to 100m.  Its landed some big fish mate, good fun.

Heres one I found quickly, with a 300g jig :)
