(or why it would be terrible if they did).

1. They haven't played a game in Australia yet during this World Cup, and our grounds are bigger than postage stamps.

2. It would be completely intolerable for them to hold the Rugby World Cup, the Bledisloe Cup, the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy and the Cricket World Cup.

3. Because they take the piss - we let them join our domestic competitions, and they end up stabbing us in the back by beating us. The Breakers just won their fourth NBL title, the Wellington Phoenix are currently top of the A-league, the Warriors have one of the biggest packs in the NRL, and the Super 15, well, the less said the better.

4. The whinging about the underarm. OK, so it wasn't in the spirit of the game, and made us look small-minded and terrified of losing. But it was 1981, was actually within the rules, and you were wearing beige so probably deserved it anyway. Enough already.

 5. If they won the World Cup undefeated after dominating everyone else by playing great cricket, and beating us twice, the bragging would just be too much to bear.

6. On a properly paced pitch, with a proper size ground, where the dew doesn't settle halfway through the second innings, they will struggle to hit sixes or swing the ball.

7. Russell Crowe.

 8. The 1984 Olympics - they won eight gold medals, we won precisely half that. They came up with the joke: "What do Australia and Carl Lewis have in common? Four gold medals."

9. Phar lap. It hurts to be reminded that he was not Australian. But really, who cares where he was born? He was famous for winning for Melbourne Cup, not the Timaru Classic.

10. They aren't Australian.

GDay Guys,

I really hope its a great game,

I know that at least both Aussies & Kiwi's will both have a go, not like the Indians last night.

let the commemts fly!!

Cheers
Craig

To reply:

1. They haven't played a game in Australia yet during this World Cup, and our grounds are bigger than postage stamps.

Actually, the Basin Reserve playing area in Wellington is bigger than most grounds in Australia.

2. It would be completely intolerable for them to hold the Rugby World Cup, the Bledisloe Cup, the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy and the Cricket World Cup.

Why?  You Aussies scared to admit there are better sportsmen and women in the world than Aussies?

It has been a long time coming and we Kiwis will enjoy our moment in the sun and keep reminding you of it too....

4. The whinging about the underarm. OK, so it wasn't in the spirit of the game, and made us look small-minded and terrified of losing. But it was 1981, was actually within the rules, and you were wearing beige so probably deserved it anyway. Enough already.

No, never enough.  That was no way to win a match.  You forget that we Kiwis play the game for the love of the game but when we get dealt a low blow like that one, that is something we will never forget.  We forgive most things but that was and is unforgivable.

 5. If they won the World Cup undefeated after dominating everyone else by playing great cricket, and beating us twice, the bragging would just be too much to bear.

Oh what a shame

6. On a properly paced pitch, with a proper size ground, where the dew doesn't settle halfway through the second innings, they will struggle to hit sixes or swing the ball.

See point one.

7. Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe is still a Kiwi - or didn't you know that?  Jeeze......

 8. The 1984 Olympics - they won eight gold medals, we won precisely half that. They came up with the joke: "What do Australia and Carl Lewis have in common? Four gold medals."

Yeah, well it is nice to be able to poke the borax sometimes (see point 3 above)

9. Phar lap. It hurts to be reminded that he was not Australian. But really, who cares where he was born? He was famous for winning for Melbourne Cup, not the Timaru Classic.

Phar Lap was still Kiwi owned, bred and trained.  See also point 7 above.

10. They aren't Australian.

And that is a good thing surely.

But apart from all the banter above, like you I believe this will be a great game and the winner.....?  Well it doesn't really matter which home nation wins because cricket will win on the day.

On ya Numnuts, you're dead right the Aussies are a true cricketing super power and should wipe the floor with our part timers.

Just imagine if your team of world class superstars were beaten by a bunch of guys from NZ who might not have the pedigree but believed in themselves, played as a team, were hungry and humble with it.

If we win it becomes one of the great moments in our sporting history, if you guys win it's just another trophy in the cupboard. If we win the country rejoices, if you win the fight over the captaincy continues.

If we lose we applaud our team and take it in our stride (unless it's the AB's). If you lose you should be looking for a hole to hide in.

I suppose tomorrow will tell if you guys are opening the cupboard door or heading down to the local hardware to purchase a wide mouthed shovel.

And when you spoke of our sportsmen disrupting your parties, you left Kiwi, James McDonald and Jimmy Cassidy off the list.

we weren't better by a better team, we were beaten by a great team.

Our guys can still be proud of the way they have played, what they have achieved and how they have managed to captivate a nation.

Now bring on the RWC.

Gday guys,
Biggest crowd ever for a ODI, our bowlers were very good, 3 ball duck rocked you guys. Should he have tried to get settled then go mad after say 5 overs ? Kiwis were great all thru the world cup well done. Cheers Craig

Yeah, mate you hit the home run right there.  No excuses - we were not the best team on this occasion.

Should have bowled first and chased. By doing that we handed all the glory to Oz and put massive pressure on ourselves!

I agree.  Was very surprised they opted to bat first as there was the issue with the sun and shadows towards the end of the first innings which would not have made it easy.  Lot to be said for a 'gun-ho' attitude but that was the World Cup final and I would have thought individual attempts at heroics should have been reined in for the first few overs .....

They deserve it, heroes imo. Not so much about for the WC, but this total summer of cricket. So they lost 2 games in a home season, and one wasnt even in NZ. Unprecedented?
