Guys new to this jigging stuff and had a great session out solo in Whitianga during the week, however the side of the boat has been beaten to ****e as well as myself trying to tame angry kingies.

The pro's make it look so easy bring the fish in over the side, removing hooks and releasing.

So whats the secret?

Cheers

Usually the rats are the ones who do the damage, either grab the mouth/jig quickly and haul them in, or just use one of these and release them before getting in the boat.

Yep rats can go mental.

I often grab the jig and put gloved hand in their mouth, grip their jaw in one hand and jig with other hand. If feisty try to hold upside down and under your arm. Obviously not possible on the big ones though.

My boat is a bit far off the water but I find if I reach down and grab the jig or lip grab the fish BEFORE I lift it's back half clear of the water it's a lot better in terms of thrashing around.

Once you lift them clear of the water they pretty much go nuts.

I like to swing them up under my arm (upside down is even better).

Be carefull though, I have got water in my arm pit area before swinging them up to far and wet my shirt there, when you go back to jigging it can chaffe the skin under your arm very quickly and get pretty uncomfortable to say the least!

Found chucking a wet towel over them if your going to bring them on board really calms them down. Or you could get a decent sized hook remover/gun and pull it out over the side of the boat.
