Having a bit of a do this weekend & am intending to buy approx. ten bags of ice to chill beer, wine food etc but have got to wondering if I would be better off buying salt ice that if was still intact could be put in the freezer to use when going fishing?

Firstly is there any reason salt ice would not be suitable for the former application other than costing more?

Secondly could salt ice in a bin still in plastic bag be expected to last say 12 to 20 hours then still be in reasonable condition to return to the freezer for future use?

Thirdly where is the best place to purchase salt or standard ice on the North Shore ?

Take your chillys to sanfords fill em up, cost us $4 per chilly bin filled to the top for memory. When you get home bag up the excess in rubbish bags for fishing missions and you will still have plenty left over for booze and food. We were using it when camping in our cocktails and it tasted fine.

bazza salt ice will last 12-20 easy in a decent chillibin and in fact will stay almost rock solid unless broken so shouldnt have a problem getting it into the freezer

Barry,we re-use our salt ice all the time,if its melted and sticks together its thrown on the concrete to break it up as we load the boat up for the next trip .

20kg bags here cost $12,could bring a bag up with us on Sunday if you wish ? Dosnt take long to cool things down being colder then standard ice

i have a mate who is an ex longliner  and they sold their fish to the Japanese who insisted on the best and freshest fish. he insists on slurry and NOT salt flake ice as it burns the fish due to its extreme coldness. best thing according to him is to have a cold slurry so the whole fish cools down for at least 24 hrs then fillet, believe me the results of quality fish are outstading

LOL. Really? I would have thought it would be quite different Firey.. unless you were mainly on Margaritas of course, and if so bravo to you!

When someone brings me fish to smoke that has been in salt ice for a few days I need to reduce the amount of sprinkled salt I add to the dry flesh or else it's too salty. I can't say that I've actually tried salt ice in drinks though, but it's hard not to imagine it affecting the taste.

I have a rain water tank that I make drinks ice out of and I SWEAR that it tastes better than tap water.... but perhaps that's partly psychological. Ha!

EDIT: You'd have to wonder exactly where the icemaker sucks up the salt water from too I guess. Just under the jetty where the boats are all moored? I dunno if that's how it's done, but would you take a feed of raw scallops from there? Smile

chilly bin with salt ice works great for keeping beer and spirits cold for a couple of days but be warned you may have to restock with alcohol.

i usually get loose salt ice from brass monkey in onehunga, but sometimes get a 5kg from topcatch if im going out kawakawa bay area.

i'll sometimes bag and refreeze the loose ice if i dont catch anything that mission and usually refreeze the prepacked bags unless they are fouled up badly with bait, got 4 trips out of a bag of ice last winter.

i wouldnt consume salt ice. but hey the salt + alcohol might kill off enough of the bugs to keep you intact.

I think you will find the amount of salt in salt ice is miniscule. Uncle the reason the slurry makes the fish salty is they use salt water in the slurry. Taste some new ice and you will barely taste salt

The website for Brass Monkey salt flake ice states that they use potable water and the amount of salt added is 500 grams per tonne of ice and is barely discernible to taste. Details here:

Brass monkey is the cheapest I've been able to find and I've tried a few. I've got a large fridge that I've cut the freezer off the bottom which I put on the back of my ute when we go on kingy charters and that (I've had 5 good kingies and a heap of snapper in it before with room for more so it's a good size), I can get this filled to the top with salt ice for $20 from brass monkey

There will be several members attending as it is, so we don't want to risk it getting any more unruly by inviting extras.

One person the will not be coming however is my younger brother from Cairns as had flown to Brisbane in order to transfer on to the international flight to Auckland but was not allowed on board because his passport had a tad less than six months before the expiratory.

Therein lies a timely warning to anyone planning on travelling overseas to check your passport to make sure it has more than six months to run from your date of departure.

Saltwater freezes to a maximum of -21c but you need 300g/litre to do this. Normal salt ice with its minimal salt content will freeze only down to -2c

A couple of good handfuls in a 3litre fruit juice container will freeze to -10c and it is the release of energy at the transition of state change from solid to liquid makes this useful. A sea water slurry with these ice packs works great.

A number of Saltwater bottles in the freezer will take the same space of salt ice, work better and are reusable..
