There seems to be a bit of live-bait talk in here, so I thought I would post here. Let me know if I should move it to newbies.

I've only ever put live baits out on an overhead. Whats the go with spin? Do you loosen off the drag and then rush like mad when your bait gets hit to tighten it up? Or leave the bail arm open and watch carefully? Or is the weight not that bigger deal i.e kingy wont spit it out after is feels resistance? After all they smash jigs right.

Anyone use on of these clips like the Big Angry Fish boys use?  http://www.topcatch.co.nz/sponsored-shows/big-angry-fish/live-bait-release-clip-big-angry-fish.html" rel="nofollow - https://www.topcatch.co.nz/sponsored-shows/big-angry-fish/live-bait-release-clip-big-angry-fish.html

Cheers.

Do it the way the Big angry fish fellas do, line clip, open bail, then just before you close the bail, flick the rod tip up to give you enough slack to get the bail arm closed. Failing that, wait till Shimano brings out a Stella with bait feeder option. Now there's an idea Wink

I just have the drag set lightly so that the kingi can run off with it then tighten the drag smoothly until I get to the fighting drag setting. Works well and circle always hooks well. Probably get a bit extra line twist this way but no worse than the fish making a big run anyway.

Means there is no clip getting in the way which I didn't like and don't have to hold the line like the open bail arm approach.

Anything deepish 40m plus and just fish with reel in gear and circles, seems to work fine.

This works for me, can be tricky to close bail arm if the fish heads for Peru on the first run.

I don't often live bait but when I do I am targeting fish not just setting and forgetting, I just feather the line with the arm open and flick the bail arm over when the time is right -I wouldn't use that clip myself as I don't fish from the rod holder but I don't doubt that it along with banding is effective.

Eggbeaters????? Overhead man, the only way. Eggbeater will probably blow up after a few kingys anyway

Agree spin reels are not for rod holders feather the line and feel the bite that is the best part too.

Cheers all. Interesting.

Cant get my head around how you'd tie a rubber band without it being stuck on the line?

Took this pic yesterday.

Its a two bander cause I was using a very large bait. The bans just break when the king strikes.

I have caught a fair number of kingi's on a spinning reel live baiting in various water depths under a baloon, its one of the newer generaion penn spinfisher live liners though so that potentially 'cheating' a bit

Question; What is the biggest/strongest baitrunner/liveliner reel?

Good idea that, thanks
You've still got the issue of getting the bail arm closed though

On this rod I use a pretty big bait when I can get them. It is set out back under a ballon. Using tuna circle hooks so try to count to 5 before lowering the rod tip and engaging the reel. Has 80lb braid on it and I set the drag at full. If you can pull line off comfortably its to soft. If you survive the first run you can "sometimes"????? lead a fish to deeper water. And sometimes you can,t lol.

My other bait will be set on a down rigger this year. Only had a couple of trips out so far but is proving very effective.

The top fish is about the ideal size for the downrigger. This big ky is a little bigger than ideal but I have had this size taken by fish under 20kg too. I find if you hook a smaller fish it is not uncommon to have the horse kingy on the reef follow it to the boat. Having a bait ready has paid off heaps.

You obviously haven't fished with a decent spin reel... Stella's don't blow up too easily

Set your drag ready to fight, only use circle hooks because your fish will already pointing down on his way to the reef no need to strike just lean into it to set the circle hook. Any reel including spin can fail if it is not upto the stresses of catching kings. Buy the right gear, set your drag reasonable hard & have confidence in what your doing. IMO
