Oh and my latest intel ain't good Mate was up on a charter with 7 others Saturday. Just the one 32cm snapper between the lot of em  I'm thinking maybe the water's a bit cool yet. Let me know how you go. I'll be offline. You have my number

See you out there Catchelot. I think krow might be right - heard similar stories from a couple of people & my last trip we got one 3kg male nowhere near spawning & the water was 16 degrees. Haven't seen a SST but the water further south sounds warmer - the spawn might progress northwards just like last year's game season. Might try 50-60m on the outside edge of the Whale foul on the outgoing tide - should be some Terakihi there for a feed if there's no snapper. ------------- treat fish like fish |

Awoke early to a bright night sky as a big moon was out in full bloom or gloom for fishing me thinks... Met at Mikes, picked up Chris further on and away we went north and launched at Waitangi. First stop Tapeka with half a flotilla... some snapper sign on the sounder at 18m so drfiting we did go.  Throw back snaps and Chris gets a solid hit and really good run and very spritely fight up, it tangled my gear and had trace and hooks well wrapped around his line so was worried he could pinged off by it, but luck prevailed as a beaut porae rose into view.  More throwbacks snaps and we moved on a bit further and ran into another flotilla in 30-35m and not long commencing our drift the Tapeka boats were arriving and some charge straight in real fast and then cut motor and set a drift really close and then another in front of us and they put out a huge sea anchor and so we nearly drift into them...far out is this BOI behaviour the equivalence of JAFA boat traffic!   Finally a keeper snap and then a tarakihi and then the lads got keen on changng their gear to small hooks for the tara's, but I told them you will only get more lil goldies and sure enough thats all they got. Next stop out to middle ground as below 45-50m...one more keeper snap and more throwbacks.  Then on to Whale Rk and did three different drifts and all quiet... so head in a bit closer and have a drift 22-35m just around from Redhead... and leatherjackets, more throw backs and a Sandagers Parrotfish which was unusual to catch on a bait.   And that was about it for us, on the way back we stopped off Tapeka but more over towards the Brampton area where there was no boats or traffic and zip. So a hard slow day for us, but nice day out, great fun company. Chris' porae below about 8 pounda   So full moon or water still too cold, we had 15.1-15.7 deg and the water is quite dirty also.

Just got back to tauranga after spending the last week up there. Went fishing 4 times, fishing was fairly hard, cant say there was alot of keepable fish anywhere we fished, tried various spots, close in to Tapeka, Roberton, Midas, out from Midas, and around Nine Pin. Water temp was anything from 15.5 to 16.5 the fish were mostly males, couple of nice 50cm fish, a 55'er, a 59'er and a 75'er which went 19lb were the highlights of our trips all the rest were just pannies in the 30's, ended up keeping 15ish snapper over the 4 trips, and a couple of nice Porae, was a good week off work. Locals who we spoke to at the ramp all said the fishing was pretty hard and most were coming in with 2-3 fish from a half day on the water. |

Thank, I have been working overseas for years and remember seing lots of them around the Poor Knights when diving. They were inquisitive and seemed to like the letters on the silver parts of my wetsuit. I am going to be back home for Christmas for the first time in many years and hope to get some good fishing time in then. |

| Four of us did an overnighter around Cape Brett and got good fish on dark and early morning. Biggest was an 18lb beauty and kept fish over 40cms.. Got our limit this way. Daytime was very hard fishing. Temps still around 15' and not many good fish in BOI harbour. My advise, dive during day and fish last and first light, then go home. |

Blue Heeler fishing comp is on, Krow Junior got a 7.75kg snap out in the middle ground well done Chris, otherwise the boys report tough fishing...

around the corner towards the Cavillis we had schools of bait fish showing on the sounder in 56mts of water that black the sounder out to 18mts, drifting through these produce a good number (18) of Snapper 35 to 50cm and 3 Tarakihi 1 huge Blue Cod, not one throw back, that would have been a first for us, we fished from 9am to 1pm... there was no birds working, we had one longliner Comm working outside of us maybe in 60 to 70mts otherwise we saw no one, (love it like that)... snapper are only half full of row so i guess it is still too cold yet up here... all our fish were caught on either Soft baits Zman Coconut Ice curly tails or orange Karbura lures... was my first day out in over 2mths... here is a pic of the how big the row was in our fish,  here is what was left half way through filleting the fish, the bigger ones had been made ready for smoking, but you can see the size of the blue cod compared to the Tarkihi...  ------------- Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing |
