whats a good set for using light softies for snapper and also being able to throw some spinners for trout?

was thinking a stradic ci4 2500 with 6lb line and finding a light rod to suit? maybe 1-3kg

or would I be better to go for the stradic 1000 and 4Lb line if wanting to use for trout aswell

The new Stradic 1000 Ci4 Plus would enough for both Snaps and Trout Daveo. I have a Sustain FG1000 with 150mtrs of 6lb and it handles Snap's just fine. Only time I feel under gunned is Cape Maria Van Diemen and Great Expedition Bay

Cheers MIB I have heavier sets aswell so fishing other areas isn't a issue, just wanted to give this trout spinning a go and go ultra light when soft baiting over sand

think a trip to hunting and fishing may be in order

Dave, I run/ran the 1000 and 2500ci4, the larger spool of the 2500 casts better IMO than the 1000 for light work, there is little in the size, the 2500 is quite smal, more like an inbetween size and incredibly light.

The 2500 Ci4 on a Daiwa Wilderness 3pc rod, it's a real honey as I don't usually like Daiwa stuff. It's 7ft, 2-8lb with Sic guides. I fish 5lb PowerPro with a 2m leader of 6-8lb fluoro. Has handled Salmon to 20lb just fine and can work ultra light jig heads and CD5's well as relatively crisp tip. Depending on much you want to spend, The Complete Angler has a good range of fresh spin rods like Lox.

FWIW I've caught plenty of trout and salmon up to 8lb on my 1-3kg Aegis with Symetre 2500 and  4lb microfuse. 1 pound of drag is all I've needed. I fit a good 50m of 16lb mono under 100m of 4lb fused. The backing may seem to be overkill, but the fused line actually tests at 12lb and I don't like the thought of my backing being weaker. Usually use a 4lb or 8lb fluro leader.

I got it from complete angler and they give good service, but the rod was pricey. the reel isn't so important imo, as long as it has a smooth drag.

sounds like the 2500 might be the way to go, its also only about 30 grams heavier than the 1000

just went for a Ci4 1000 for the same use , rod is okuma citrix 4 piece  7'2''travel rod , for light salt work and when I cross to the dark side in the fresh , just gotta get some single hooks. Actually might use the CD dropshot (Light) for the salt ,at 7'9'' 2 piece its almost like a fly rod when hooked up.

Was in top catch and a bloke was spooling up a 8000 oc baitrunner with 30 kg braid for canal fishing , said he was sick of loosing fish
Doesnt really have anybearing on this thread but found it humorous, when i told him i used 4 pd braid in the same spot he looked at me real funny

Classic, may as well go and net your fish with that gear! That would take all the fun out of fishing IMO, I love the challenge of landing big fish on light gear as you probably do as well!

Smile

Probably losing them by having the drag too tight. I doubt heavier line will fix that.

8-10lb is good for snapper, a bit of allowance for 'Chompers'

Beware using a light leader for snapper: compare a snapper's mouth with that of a trout, and reach the obvious conclusion.

I've ended up going to 15lb fluoro leader for snapper on the same rods, reels and 2-4lb braid lines I'll happily use 6lb leader on for trout.

Mind you, of2fsh uses a lighter leader in Stren that I will (10lb from memory).

For trout Dave, 6-8lb fluoro leader married to 4-6lb braid (green, not yellow or any high vis) is fine, but ultralight Snapper I'd probably go 15lb.  Get some Rapala's in CD7 Brown Trout pattern and hit the Hutt when it's coming down after some rain and you'll have some fun, let me know and might tag along.

Always used PowerPro in 5lb Dave, breaks out around 12lb + from memory, nice casting line and well priced, moss green is the go, back to back uni-knot to join braid to leader. I use mostly CD5 these days, CD 7 will cast further and dive deeper, good to use a small clip on the end as the bib down action can chafe leader on the riverbed on retrieve.

No less than 10 pd and only use stren coral mist in 10, haven't been nipped off on it yet

What about leader length? I haven't noticed that it makes much difference to me in the light braid classes. I'm using 4lb microfuse which doesn't stick out much and often use a short enough leader that I can have the knot hanging outside the top guide on a cast.

With bigger gear I often have it long enough to wrap around the spool so I can cast a heavier lure with confidence.

With the 4 pd microfuse I'll go down as short as half a rod length (start at about 1.5 mtrs),early in the season like at the moment the waters generally a bit dirtier in close so I'm not to fussy ,later on when the fish start to slow down on the bite I'll be a bit fussy with leaders etc

None. Knots only.

1. Braid doesn't suffer from twist like mono, so no need for a swivel.

2. Most of us distrust clips (and cannot see much point in them since a Lefty's Loop is so easy and fast to tie); but specially on really light line, clips also interfere with the way the SB [edit - or, IMO, a Rapala] swims.

I use small snap swivels when spin fishing for trout ... It's just faster to swap lures, especially with cold fingers down this way and never had one break on trout (barracouta destroyed one in the estuary though) ... I don't use swivels for soft baits though, but that is a different rod/reel for me

I'm with PJay here, I don't see the point of using a swivel or clip when Lefty's non slip mono knot is so strong and reliable. I've been using them for over two years and have had a grand total of one failure in all that time. I'm pretty sure it was the line itself not the knot.

A swivel or clip is a 100% must have if using Rapala's or you'll quickly rub the knot off each time the lure hits the rocks on the 'nose-down' retrieve', everything else a uni-knot loop all the way. Have to disagree about them affecting the Rapala's motion, makes no difference - what can effect the motion is an eye bent out of alignment, does not take much, I only use the light wire Japanese clips with no swivel - very small and strong. Have jumped in pools with Rapala's testing this and observing the differing actions.

Dunno if you can make them out in this pic TCG, but have attached below so you can see, they are very small.

Those clips look very secure FF , more secure than the standard genie clip which is known to disconnect sometimes , will have to try and get some.
For everything else I use a uni knot to make a loop , pinch it up tight leaving a small loop. Loop closes up on a fish if its a good one , If I feel fussy I just cut and retie which is not a bad idea if its been near a snappers jaws anyway. If its a hot bite I just chuck it back out and seems to make no difference .
Main thing is I can tie a uni knot well and quickly .
For joining braid to to leader , back to back uni knot but I prefer making a double in braid with either a bimini twist or 7 turn spider hitch and attaching leader with a Yukatan knot . This set up is virtually seamless and casts well . 20lb trace and start with 2m leader. Have had fantastic service from a bulk spool of 10lb power pro in the moss green , will have to get some in 5 or 6lb for trout.

Thanks for this about the Rapalas - we're all here to learn. I'll take your advice. I have a packet of the light clips.

They are very secure alright and very minimal, so no bulk, I'm the same Coro, back to back uni's but I tend to do quite a few more turn than is necessary, but that can effect the knot, making it too rigid and tangle back on itself during a cast, so now using about 10 turns on the braid and 7 on the mono, seems about right.

I like to have at least a few turns on the spool to take up the casting inertia, but everyone has their own preferences on this.

Other than Rapala's I use a uni exclusively, I like the way it allows the lure / fly freedom to move in the loop until drawn down upon. Cheers
