Thought I may Aswell get in early, I'm available this game (marlin) season if your looking for numbers to fill up the boat. young, fit, have own rod reels & big assortment of lures and livebait rigs, split fuel cost ect, doesn't snore (overnighters) Keen as, dont get sea sick, enjoy a good laugh, sleeps overated, marlin hungry, dont mind the f-bombs heading my way, plus 23 sick days at work that need to be used =) Pm me or 027 4258132 Tony, (Hamilton)

| Peak season you can get lucky last season I caught my fish in less than 60m. And did almost all of my trolling in less than 100 and also picked up quite a few albacore and skippies in the process. As for the 100m mark maybe 15miles from the bar?. I trolled on the weekend to see if I could find any tuna straight out from 60 to 350 odd meters without a sniff, plenty of dolphins and whales around and a huge school of krill best temp around 18.2 maybe next weekend. |

| I have been west abit beach launching from muriwai an bethels but only for inshore fishing an diving, grown up out west so have a respect for its unpredictability an how dangerous it can be so would never attempt the bar without knowledge an know how. One day when I own a boat il do the coast guard course aswell. |

Anyone go for a look out wide on the weekend? Signs were looking good out of raglan in at 50-60m lots of bait around, clear water and temps starting to creeping up.

Has anyone heard of tuna schools and where they are at? Heard of one boat picking up albies in 80m off the Manukau Bar in the weekend. I forgot to look at water temp when we were snapper fishing

Water temp was 18 degrees at 60m on Sun 7th and 19 degrees at 40m on Sat 13th - water felt nice and warm to. ------------- Good fishing trip nothing breaks, great trip catch fish. |

We had 17.8 in 50m of carters at Raglan on Friday. Blue ish water and bait schools on the way to 21.
Starting to feel fishy on the west, not long now. |

 we trolled lures from 60 out saw birds at around 90m and worked them for 5 albacore could have caught more but home time loomed too early. also got a 70 odd kg mako to the boat for release best temp around 18.5 |

I weighed an albie for CSFC boat 'Sick Dayz' today, it went 7.14kg. They trolled way out but reported there were albacore galore from 60m with big schools of saury jumping and lots of albie action with gannets at 80m, where the best water was. They said it was 19.5 degrees out there. We're getting close! They were real basterds though because they told a little tinny they caught their fish off Clarks Beach, and off that tinny went. Got to love the Counties spirit  Sounds good for a mission tomorrow but I'll stay at home, be a good boy and mow the lawns. My boat will be out - sans Smudge - but only harbour fishing - expensive time of year this Xmas time  . Still, our turn will come. |

We (myself and mashinator) were out off Raglan getting albies upto 10.5kg on the 23rd. Ended up with 10 before we couldn't fit anymore in the ice box! |

Went for the first look of the season. Trolled out to 110m south Manukau .Temp 19.5 plenty of dolphins and gannets in 80m .Water greeny all the way out .Saw a lot of bait in 60m .Hooked a small mako and a few albies .Nice day on the briney but no marlin seen .Cant catch one sitting on the couch . ------------- if its not worth eating its not worth killing |

Went to Gannet today, Plenty of Kings around, water temp above 21 degrees. saw 21.9 once, We just left gannet heading towards raglan and saw three albis tail jumping out of the water, (maybe marlin chasing???) didn't have any big lures or gear so threw a wax wing out and got a good Albi,   |

Friday over Manukau at 60m trolling in tandem with a mate and their boat had a marlin take 200m of line before dropping the hook. THEY'RE HEEEEERE............

We put tuna lures in at 50m but got plagued by kahawai in the workups until we hit 60m when we started to pick up albies. We only went to 65m as we had 3 albies and our bin was full - we'd been snapper fishing - but lots of birds and the water was up to 20.4 degrees. Big schools of anchovies which the albacore were feeding on but no skippies seen. Only shark we saw was a blue but we didn't spend more than an hour and a half dragging lures. The water wasn't quite blue but it was looking like things were about to happen. Conditions were AAA+ today. ------------- Best gurnard fisherman in my street |

Most unfortunate, Ynot and I were returning to the bar when I heard the talk on the vhf's. By the time we reached the bar support vessels seem to be stood down as coastguard and police were on the scene with a helicopter we could see. On return to huia there were a number of officers interviewing and looking at a particular boat. I believe they were looking in the vicinity of the ninepins, either way to be in the water anywhere on that strip of coast, well not good. ------------- Still cruising in my now sweetas pimped out Southern 755 HT0! |

I cant understand it, I was out today returning about 2.00 to Little Huia and would have gone over the bar around the time that they hit trouble - I was in a 5 metre boat 3 with POB, albeit it is a good sea worthy boat FC500 C/C and the bar was a pussy cat with only a 1m swell to contend with both ways. The worst was in the harbour where the North channel and the South meet which was uncomfortable and lumpy but not life threatening. People talk about going over the bar but you DONT ... you go around it preferably by the south channel. However 5 people in a 5 metre boat is a lot of weight in what is a small boat for the West Coast. We did not like the look of the North channel this year compared to last year when we went through it a few times. Has this channel changed? |

On a lighter note. There was a lot of blue water and activity around the 65 metre mark with anchovy bait schools everywhere with the attendant Albacore which were taking Micro jigs in the 50-60gm range in particular the lumo Ocean Angler jigs on the drop in the top 15 metres. Caught a heap early on, some around 8kg and the 3rd crew member was having a ball up front on the casting platform on my fish city boat with salt water fly gear, boy do those albies go on light gear. Then off slowly trolling out to the 100+ mark with outriggers & 5 trolled lures only to get a marlin strike and short run at the 92 and getting less and less fishy looking until the call to go back to where the bait schools & birds were. Numerous strikes followed but were only albacore and one small mako that we evaded. Final count was 22 albacore and a full 120ltr chilly bin - donated 5 to other boats passed on the way in 2 family friends on the way back to home and the rest to neighbours and a couple for each of us. |

Thanks for the report , always the same old out there 60 to the undy and no further needed , lack of skippies though ,mmmmmm ,like those Buggars. in the mix . Yeah regarding the channel in and out today had me guessing not out today ,but I was confident it was a Dottle today for the return |

| Also out today, off Muriwai. Very active in 55-70m on the way out with gannets, loads of small baitfish and dolphins. Didnt hook albies until about 75/80m. Up to 7kg. Trolled to 100m, bit quiet out there. Was quiet most the way home, even where it had been very active earlier |

Late start had to gather some crew yesterday. Got out over the Raglan bar bout midday. Bar was pumping had to let a few sets roll through before we shot the gap. Headed straight out west toward the 100m line. Best looking water was 65-80m lots of birds, current and weed lines about and good water colour. Temp up to 21.4 after 80m it got colder and water colour not so good at the 100m line. Should of stayed in around that 65-80m in hindsight. 100m was dead as. One will be hung up soon I think, just gotta pick the right areas atm. Stopped in at Gannet before heading home for nothing after jigging for an hour. Gannet has been strange lately, had no luck with the kings there last couple times where as previously Id almost gurantee my mates a half decent king there. Whats going on with the place??? |

Fishtrack showing exactly how you described it Gowest. There is a finger of warm water running NW from Raglan.. straight out off Wakato River mouth there is a hot spot at 22 degrees @ 70 M That would be my pick

I wouldn't bother in close in 60_80mtrs for marlin just yet, heaps of albies, kawai dolphins and makos but don't think many marlin. some have claimed hook ups from bill fish but they probably makos or big albies. we had em all hitting the big lures in that depth, got three makos to the boat on monday. water was blue and warm in close, then green till 100m then blue again from 100 - 300. commies out there. i would day the marlin will start a little wide first in that water before coming into closer bait. just a theory. Was a great day with some fun to be had in close, great time to get a feed. Thanks to Neil for taking us out, good guy and great skipper, learned a few new tricks. ------------- buying usless exspensive fishing gear is my second favourite hobby. |

hmmmm its interesting you say ;that about albies and makos as i would say that myself but we were north of piha at 60m there were gannets and dolphins and albies everywhere and big balls of anchovies on the sounder with 21 degree water and the said fish that visited our mates gear took a full sized black magic Harlequin lure theres one hanging in the fishing shop in pukekohe have a look and make your own conclusion, 4 people saw the fish. so we are definately heading back up that way when the swell comes back down. cant wait. I used to work on a charter boat out this side years ago and the 50 to 80m line north of piha was where we caught most of our yellowfin (sadly extinct here) and marlin.

We also caught a kahawai on a Pakula Lumo Sprocket long rigger, take from that what you want All our albies were caught on the shotgun a medium/small lumo, and something was hitting the teasers the whole time as well. Seen a few dolphins we initially identified as marlin, till we got a second or third look. Every thing looks like a marlin when you want to see one. Hope you did see on and hook it, as thats good news for all. Will be back out on saturday or sunday as well. Only time before they turn up in numbers. |

Have seen it several times....tried teasing but no bites. One, likely a blue, followed us for 10 minutes and we tried several tricks, including a livey, but no bites. Every year, we find some lures that have not had any action but on winding in at the end of the day have seen bill rash on leader... ------------- Be yourself; everyone else is already taken |

| Yep Roy, 2 were blues that just followed for ages (should have tried harder to get a bite), one was a tailing stripey and it was more that we were in his space rather than him in ours (not interested in anything although we followed in front of him for over 50 minutes) and last year as we slid down the back of a big wave, and the lure stopped dead in the water, a stripey, about to bite just lost interest. |

| Was north of cables in 120m today. Had a nice marlin in the gear. Pulled 50m string on the lumo sprocket then dropped off. Had a good look at it and definitely a marlin. Never saw another boat all day. Top day out on SICK DAYZ. |

I was out yesterday. For us, and many others we spoke to it was a very quiet day. A few boats were working the usual 60 - 120m lines with no real action to speak of so we nipped out to the 500m line. Water was better and there were a number of comm alby boats out there. Numerous sunfish, and about 21 degrees give or take but no sight nr sound of the target species |

For of us paddled out to 80m off the port and got into some big albies; biggest 10kg between 50 and 70m Beautiful condition yesterday with little wind and calm seas Water deep blue and around 19.5 degrees So far fish are bigger than last year. Rainbow |

| Very quiet off the manukau bar today, went out to 65m open bar.. Saw birds working at 53, worked the area for a bit with no luck.. Saw fish feeding at 62, worked the area for a bit, nothing... Highest temp was 20.8 at 53, everywhere else was 20.7 |

And it was the same off the Manukau also .Plenty of life of life 80-90m, heaps of lb's, but the water is not that real, inky blue yet. Nice day out all the same |

Have made a few changes to game fishing set up over the past few months so shot out of Kawhia on Monday for a bit of an early season shakedown and to have a sniff around. Plenty of good sign between the 60 and 80 meter mark but the water temp was pretty cool. Got into a nice temperature break around the 100m mark so put the gear out and got the new Bonze spread running sweetly. Got into a few fat alberts around the 6kg mark. The usual suspects were hanging around but not making too much of a nuisance of themselves...  All seemed to go pretty quiet for a couple of hours and before we had a quick tap on the shotgun as a very fired up Stripey came tearing up the spread and exploded onto the Bonze D-Shackle I had running on the short corner. The fish burst out of the water and gave a few head shakes before going on a screaming run for the horizon. We chased it down hard as it did a few more aerobatic manoeuvres before digging down deep.  We spent an hour trying to bring the fish up and after a lot of back and forth we got it boat side. Adam on the leader did an awesome job wiring his first fish.  It was in good condition and still very lively so after a couple of quick photos I was stoked to be able to send a very solid West Coast Marlin on it's merry way.   Very happy with our start to the season and to be able to get one on the board at this early stage. Fingers crossed it's a sign of things to come! Went out on Sunday afternoon. Solo. Had a mate pull the pin as he was sick. Went to the Mokau trench and stayed there for the night. Water was not that good colour wise but temp 20.5. Mate came up Monday morning and they bottom fished for a few hours after daylight. Caught a lot of blue nose and Puka. I stayed there till mid day then trolled nth up the 200/300 line. A lot of com albacore boats and the water was very blue and warm half way to the 124. Saw nothing. Could not contact other boats as vhs had broken down. Pity really as those guys let you know if any marlin around. Stayed at the 124 Monday night then started to head for home down the 100 line. Saw a marlin rounding up fish on surface so had time to put gear on before I went over for a run past it. As I got to with in 50 meters of it out to my left it dived and within ten seconds he grabbed the lumo. Took a fair amount of line before I cleared the 4 other rods. At one stage I thought I had lost him as boat was sitting still in water but I was retrieving line without much weight. This fish swam straight for the boat. It was tailing on the surface. I thought I was going to be able to tag it as it swam past the boat. Came to within 12 mts of the boat and then woke up. It turned did 10 massive leaps away from me and that was it. All over. Threw the hook. Home at 4.00 pm. Do a bit of solo fishing but real hard work when you have vhs to listen in on. |
