small budget to try to match to the grunt of an 18K.

I would be giving Greg at GoFish a call. He has the Power Jig 832 Stickbait rod for $599 which represents a good value option...
The 18000SW Stella is a lot of reel on a stick bait rod unless you are planning a trip for GT's. If so a popper rod may be the better option.
You'll knock over NZ kingi's with the 14k Stella no problems, plus it is a way lighter reel if you're casting all day..

A second hand caranx kaibutsu pencil instrument? If you can find one.

i fish in real rugged terrain and also use it for marlin so the 10000sw 2008 model wasn't really on option. i don't really use it too cast all day so not too fused about the weight. appreciate the responses.

I use a rodworks offshore stickbait rod. 24-37kg. Awesome rod with heaps of grunt. Think I payed 450 new

Yea I think so. I havnt used alot of stickbait rods. But have used a kaibatsu, terez and a monster mesh and the offshore is a better rod by far

I use the stella 14k. But my mate uses a 18k on his. Also know a guy who uses a dogfight on one and caught a 160kg marlin with it

is the offshore illusion series the rod you are talking about as it is stated as both a stick bait and popper rod. just wondering if its more of a stick bait rod and has a soft enough tip to work them as i will primarily be working stick baits. cheers

thanks, what would be there ideal casting weight?

In your price range the offshore rods are great value for money. Do NOT go with the Caranx or Terez rods, the 18k Stella is too much reel for those rods

yea, figured that. thanks. would the offshore rods suit throwing round 100gm stickbaits

I use 80-130gm stickbaits on mine. But 100 is best suited I find

Ditch the Daiwa, go the offshore. Reels probably a tad on the heavy side, but you won't get better value for money than those NZ made CTS blanks. Incredible bang for your chang a lang. I used to flick 60 - 160g with mine, with the middle range of about 100g being the sweet spot. They way over rate their casting weights for some reason. You'll also find they are closer to 8ft than 7'6".

Got the same offshore rod & couldn't agree more with above statement. Great value, very strong.

would you recommend the 150-200gm or 200-300gm rod for the stella. thanks heaps

Although that is a beast of a reel, the heavier version illusion PSS is more of a stiffer popper rod. Whereas the lighter version is more suited to stick baits and the odd smaller popper.

so the stella 18k shouldn't be too over gunned for the offshore 150-200gm rod then.

Agree about the Terez, but the Caranx has some grunt, have smashed some bloody big fish on that rod, with an 18k on it, great rod for the money

so do you reckon the 18k has enough grunt for the 18k?
