I'm intending on doing some light tackle record chasing with my kids this year - 7 & 9 on 3,4 & 6kg line.  I need to look at some additional reels for this and was after some advice.  Target species are Trevally and Kahawai followed by Albies and Skippies come summer.

Features which I consider to be important are, in order:

Lever Drag to apply a known amount of pressure

Smooth Drag

Level Wind so they don't end up witht usual hump.

Smallish and light so they can handle them ( they've inherited my overbearing stature!)

Robust so they can take a few bangs and drops.

Given this I've pretty much settled on the Shimano Charter Specials with at least 1 of each size.  Is this realistic for what I intend to do or am I better to flag the level wind of look at an altogether different reel.

     Cheers

way to go DA!

If you want some company, "deckie" and cemera guy for any of those sorts of outings give me a shout....awesome foresight my friend!

"I've pretty much settled on the Shimano Charter Specials"

excellent choice as well...as testament...I bore witness to a 5 and 1/5 hour battle with am estiamted 140kg black marlin on a Charter Special....no problems with the reel what so ever including several brutal surface greyhounds.

Also happy to lend your sprogs my TLD5 for such a mission...no level wind but a sweet outfit regardless.

hey ay da

would recommend the charter special tr1000ld as the reel , as kezza says they are pretty tough and robust and very reliable. there are not many quality options of lever drag levelwind around

DA.

I have a Charter Special TR2000 and is a great reel. Bullet proof and simple to use. Never let me down.

You can't go wrong.

They the charter specials are good reels I have had one for about 10 years ?(paid $150) and its still going strong, drag is still smooth, the only problem I EVER had was the gearing for the levelwind crapped itself so for the last 6 years I have used it without a levelwind ( took it out completely)

Thanks for all the feedback -

Imortal - The speedy's are nice but out of my price range.  I also think they may to geared to highly for the kids.

Kerren - Thanks for the offer and I may well take you up on it.  I'll catch up for a beer and talk through my plan.  I wouldn't mind some advice on record claims etc.  As for the TLD5, I'd be too scared to let one of the monsters at it!

SB - I though I'd get a couple of spare paull(sp?) as these can go after a decent fight.  They're also pretty quick to change.

I just need to sort out some wind-ons and it's all go.

     Cheers

It's hard to go wrong with charter specials especially if you need that levelwind.  Personally I think the quicker kids, or any game angler really, learn to levelwind the better, kinda like the quicker you can get them to take the training wheels off a bike the better, but that's just me.  You're going to have an absolute ton of fun on skipjack with 6 kg line.

Hi DA - I've got a Charter Special 1000, too, and they're great reels. If you really want to trick one up, here's a letter I received, some time back.

Hi Roy,     When I was seriously in the Record Chasing Mode , I mostly used the Shimano TLD.#5 & TLD.#10 Reels for the I &2 KG. Line Classes, these of course had Specially Modified Drag Systems , set up & properly Calibrated for each respective Line Class. ( Blueprinted.) I also used some Tycoon Fin-Nor Golden Regal Light's #12. with modified Lightweight spools, Since non of these Reels are now produced , I have successfully modified many of the Shimano Charter Specials Model # 1000 for clients wanting to fish   these Line Classes. This Reel comes with a Level Wind System which can be used as is or removed , depending on Customers requirements, If the choice were mine I would remove same. Many. people also use other reels for this Light Tackle.application , depending if Casting & retrieving of Lures etc comes into the equation, such as the larger ABU & Shimano Baitcasters ( Star Drags) with Modified Drag Systems. For Bluewater applications you are so far ahead in all respects with the Larger Reel with Lever Drag System which is far superior to any Star Drag System. hope this helps, If you need further info, Please feel free to get back to me. Best Regards. Jack Erskine. [email protected]
