Hey guys has anyone had any experience with these ? The z5 and z6? They look quite good and priced well. Looking to upgrade from the starter fin-nor to something a bit more specialized. Any thoughts welcome. Budget $1000 including a rod. Fishing mayor aldies. Using 200-300 arm jigs

My experience with them is that I took one to the 3 Kings on a 6 day jigging trip in April. It worked well and in my opinion, it seemed very similar in looks/style, design, weight and performance to my JM reel.

Lots of drag, solid and felt very smooth. Well priced I think. Personally I prefer a higher speed than the 4;1 or 4;0 of the reel I used, but that's just me. I landed Kings on it up to 31 kgs no problem.

Owned one for a couple of months but unfortunately never had the chance to get it wet. Felt like a nice reel though, not a lot of weight but plenty of grunt.

For that sort of money though you are getting into the sort of range where you could almost put together a set with an Accurate which I can say with almost certainty that you would not regret. Even a well looked after second hand set would serve you well and leave you with some change to blow on shiny metal things

Sorry, unable to pass comment on the jigstar reels, but if I was looking for a new jigging setup I'd be looking very hard at the Maxel jigging reels. I jig with an accurate and a ducro but bang for buck those Maxel's look hard to beat.

thanks guys, yeah was looking at a accurate or similar when I came across the jigstar and became interested. Waiting for a reply from chris with specs and other info. Surely others have them?

Z5 takes 450m PE5, Z6 takes 450m PE6. Both reels are dual drag with dual docking and dual AR bearings. Reels are smooth and have good drag power. Ball bearing power handles with 4:1 gears.
I had 4 reels used for 20 days at the 3 Kings this summer without any problems. The reels bowled over Kings, Puka and Bass over 40kgs. Can't ask for more. If you don't envisage going to the Kings or Ranfurly, then the Shadow reel is surely up to it.

We sold out of these reels within 2 weeks but some stores might still have stock. The experts on this thread have their own opinion even without having owned or used one.    If you want good performance and have $800 to spend, buy Accurate. But if you don't have that much to spend but still want good performance, consider Shadow Z reels.

This one is a personal preference thing. I have fished with both. I own an accurate so I'm a bit biased, as I did prefer that. But the jigstar reels are quite adequate for jigging in nz
