I'm off to Vanuatu jigging popping etc. I've crimped up a few assists with 375lb steel wire. 1.6mm double sheath crimps. Using a jigstar grommet set or owner solid ring. Should I crimp tight onto the hook? Or leave it swinging in a loop? What about the grommet end? I've also tied a few using 150lb steel cored Kevlar. Any suggestions?

I've never caught doggies so I'm happy to stand corrected but thought doggies had conical type teeth rather than cutting teeth. From watching the JM jigging vid from Chesterfield it looked like they weren't getting bitten off by doggies- mostly busted off on the bottom I think. My thoughts were that if you did hook something very large with with sharp teeth (shark) you would probably want them to bite the assist off rather than losing it all by using a steel assist. Just a theory. -------------

| You will have no problems with doggies biting threw normal cevlar assist their teeth are conicle as stated. Caught numerous doggies in the past. You should be more worried about wahoo, cuda, sharks etc |

Just been up in American Samoa and we did some investigating before we went up - no need for steel on Doggies unless you expect to jig at the FADS where wahoo are around. Also heard Doggies can be gun shy of steel assists but had to question this if they are happy enough to hit a lead jig. Used steel assists in Niue and picked up Mahi so they dont seem to mind it

I would suggest heat shrinking over the steel assist cord and hook. This provides a stiffer rig which I think is better. Also steel rigs tend to put fish off, the plastic heat shrink is a bit better in this regard. ------------- give it death! |

Ill see if Prohunter Asari Braid is available.. find out tomorrow.. Its designed for traces and assist rigs .. Thanks for the input. I'll try some heat shrink. The yellow cord is the owner 150lb Steel cored line. Last year the guys were Getting bitten off using 400lb zylon hence some wire this year. |

agree with most of what has been said above. no need for steel wire trace in my opinion, reduces the amounts of hits from doggies and other species. yes you can catch doggies and other species with steel wire, but you will catch much more without, steel wire also can cause real problems when sharked as has been said. |
