Date Posted: 06 Jun 2014 at 10:07am Hi all So I recently bought a 79 Sea Nymph Gullwing (I believe) 5m. Thing is that it came with a buggered outboard. Mercury 115hp, in pieces. I believe the motor has been deemed irreparable. So,,,, I need to re power this sucker. But looking at pics from when it was running, it seems to sit pretty low in the water with the 115 and the aux mounted. Will a 70 HP suffice, or do I need to go for a 90/100/115HP? I'm on a tight budget so cost is an consideration, but with that said I would be looking at as new a motor with as few hours as possible. I would also like to run as economical as possible. Do I look at a 2 or 4 stroke? Not looking to stir up a hornets nest, but I believe that the 4 stokes are a bit more reliable? Would it be worth mounting the batteries in the bow, it the cabin to push the nose down a bit? I'm not experienced in boating at all, so any and all advice will be greatly appreciated. Posted By: Kevin.S Date Posted: 06 Jun 2014 at 11:00am Don't even think about a four stroke an that budget, any four stroke 90hp+ motor at that price will either have problems or massive hours. I've just been looking at 90hp four strokes to go on my boat and new is $15-20k and good second hand $10k. Although a four stroke will use half the petrol a two stroke will, you would have to use your boat a lot to justify the cost in saved fuel. Two strokes can be reliable if looked after, but any engine that isn't properly looked after can be unreliable and four strokes require more looking after than two strokes. The SWS Yamaha 2 strokes are generally very reliable (as good as the equivalent 4 strokes I reckon), but the SWS 115 for some reason seems to be very thirsty (well documented in these forums).  Posted By: RC1 Date Posted: 06 Jun 2014 at 12:43pm get a new 60hp Parsun (same engine capacity as 90)  for $7400 or 90hp for $7995 3 year warranty, great motor based on the Yamaha 90 design, why would you go for second hand for that price. Posted By: MikeAqua Date Posted: 06 Jun 2014 at 1:21pm Four strokes aren't necessarily more reliable.  Yam 90 HP seems a good option.  I was quoted $12,000 each for new ones installed earlier this year.  So you should be able to pick one up 2nd hand close to your budget price I suggest not storing your batteries near the bow.  They will get shaken around a lot up there, which isn't good for them - even marine batteries. Might be better to relocate your fuel tanks closer to the front than the batteries. Posted By: Black Max Date Posted: 06 Jun 2014 at 1:34pm Yep I agree. A 90hp 2-stroke would work well for your boat and your budget. You may want to check out the 90hp Mercury as an option as well.  I’ve had both the Yamaha and Mercury 90 – the Yamaha was a little bit more refined, but the Mercury had the power. Posted By: Steps Date Posted: 06 Jun 2014 at 7:36pm OI have a commander , little bigger with  115 and after a lot of maths and experimentation with props its now rather economical and quick fully loaded. In saying that , I do believe anything under 115 will be under powered and ideally something around 125/ 130 would be a little more ideal...any more a bit of a waste. On that basis I would not go under 100hp.. and would think doing so would be just enough to cause a little bit of frustration at times
