I haven't spent anywhere enough time fly fishing, for various reasons. One of the reasons is that I usually go fishing with my wife, who doesn't fly fish. I could get out more on my own, but I have to time the tides right as I struggle to get the boat on the trailer at the ramp when the tides running strongly on my own. For a while I'd been thinking that a smaller boat to go out in on my own would be handy, preferably one that was more suited to fly fishing as well. That wooden dinghy someone pointed out on trademe recently was tempting but fortunately someone bought it. Unfortunately this came up on Trademe, and I couldn't resist. It needs a little work -most notably an engine, but looks ideal.

Anyone got a cheap 20hp or so outboard taking up room in their shed?

I wouldn't personally put anything more than a 10-15hp on that boat.

I think FlybyNote posted a boat from trademe few days back, would have been perfect. That could be the one you are referring to. Motor was only a year old. Hull shape was perfect for the Manukau. Wonder who bought it?

The whaler should be okay for shoreline work. Certainly for launching at Te Toro and exploring the shoreline towards the regional park it would be very good.

I want to use the smallest motor I can get away with, less fuel and lighter. Probably won't be heading far from shore, if I want to go out deep I'll take the bigger boat. I want this to get close in to places I wouldn't go in the bigger boat. A nice little winter project.
