I took 2 of my light softbait/lure sets (7' rods, rated 1-3kg, Symetre 1000 reels) out on my weekly Saturday morning snapper fish.

3" minnows on 1/8oz jigheads (Berkley Bream Size #1), 1kg braid and 4lb leader.

Hell, it was fun, and very productive of good pannies.

The biggest snapper was 54cm, brought aboard by grabbing through the gills after a 10-15 minute battle; 3 very good kahawai gave me even more of workouts.

Caught a dozen or so small snappies, plus 4 to bring home from 41-54cm.

On the water at 0710, back home filleting at 1035.

I was particularly interested to see what would happen with the light jighead weights; I was fishing in 15-22m (though to be fair there was only about 5kt breeze, and I was on the kayak). I have an idea that the light weights with the small minnows sink at a rate consistent with that of the baitfish they mimic.

Have to get you out on Our Precious for a light line mangrove fish. Hopefully be up the far north before the end of May.

54cm snapper is a very nice fish on the light stuff, nicely done, and on a yak.

The one I like best is an Omoto 1-3kg, called "Carbon Vibe Lite" I think; manufacturer's code OMNORDSNVCLC71.

It's very, very light in the tip, so I can cast a light SB the distance I usually want to. Works little vibes well, too.

Oh, and it cost me $87 retail.

Hi, Grant.

There's a huge advantage in fishing light line from the yak: you have very little inertia, and even on light line a fish can tow you around, so it's like having an - extra strain-free - drag.

I'm going to get my lines tested soon, because I see the IGFA world 2kg line class snapper is only about 6.4 or 6.7kg. (Bloody 3kg record is over 11... )

Another sidelight on tackle. Most of my friends on here know how much I like my baitcaster reels for softbaiting. Well, in this very lightweight stuff, they're hopeless because there's not enough weight to pull the line out on casting, even though it's very light line; there's no sensible alternative to spinning reels.

Update, now that I've decided to go for a couple of light line snapper records.

Not surprisingly, I've been discovering that light leader and the little bream hooks just don't hack it on the big snappies.

I've gone to 15lb fluoro leader, though Wayne of2fsh assures me Stren Coral 10lb is up to it. The 4, 6 and 8lb fluoro I was given by a sponsor just got bitten through once I got what were 60cm +/- fish on, while I haven't lost any for that cause once I went up to the 15lb.

But now it's the hooks. These bream hooks are so much thinner gauge than my 1/0 Owner/Nitros, and they won't manage once fish get in the weeds - which big snapper will do if you have to let them run. The very light braid will cut through the weed OK, but I think what's happening is that they get their mouths right up to the weed the line's caught on, pull hard and then the little fine hooks just straighten.

Lost 2 very good fish this way yesterday, one after 50 minutes of battle in 7-8m depth.

Time to go looking through the tackle catalogues. I am finding the 3" Gulp! minnows are consistently getting the most bites, but only if the hooks are short enough to allow lots of waggle.

So it's jigheads or hooks as well as the Stren 10lb Coral.

Another option PJay is the 3/8th nitro stealth (#1) fished with a 4inch Zman paddle tail. The buoyancy of the Zman will give you the hang time of a 1/6th jig head and a gulp 3 inch minnow.

Thanks, Laurie.

Yeah, I've been wondering along those lines; but I'm not sure that it mightn't be the tiny size of the 3" minnows that's counting.

I did have some 1//0 size jigheads whose weight was only the flutes - I think !/4 oz - so that was what I've been looking for.

But I'll give your idea a shot, too. I recall you've had good success with it.

Nitro #2 3/8th, with a new Nuked chook Zman shad.
85-87cm snap from the weeds last night along with a 21kg king on 8lb braid an 20lb leader. After catching 30odd 45-55cm fish on the same bit of leader.  Mission getting that king on my lap from out of the yak...stroppy bloody fish.

That snap would have easily been landed on a 2kg line out of the yak...well not easily but def possible.  Whats a 85-87cm snap likely to weigh? 12-13kg was my guess.
I may spool up a reel with some 2kg line and have a crack.

My touchpoint for a 20lb/9.1kg snapper here in the Bay of Islands is 83cm.

Most of mine in the 86-87cm range have weighed about 10.5kg or so. 11.5kg and more tend to be +90cm. (I seldom weigh the fish I bring home; these are just weights from comps and so weighed on properly calibrated scales.)

In the lighter line classes, leader has to be <15ft long; no limit on leader weight class.

If you have a backing below your main line, and it's attached, be aware that the heavier of the backing or the main line determines the class you can claim in. So 2kg topshotted over 4kg = 4kg class.

I'm picking the hard bit would be finding braid that would break at it's breaking strain.

Yes, dead right.

Braids tend to be rated either on comparable diameter of mono, or on "not less than".

IGFA line classes are of course "not more than". My first "1.3kg" Fireline tested at 3.7kg.

See if you can find anything that says "IGFA rated".

The Paulus tasline all white would be your best bet for light line classes as they put the true breaking strain on the packaging and regularly tested

They don't, and I'm sorry if it seemed I meant that.

What I was meaning is that if a manufacturer/retailer puts "IGFA rated", or even "tournament rated", on a label, that's meant to indicate it's compliant with the relevant line class ie breaks under the rating.

IGFA never recommend specific lines; they just requires sample and testing record of line taken from the reel used in the capture (for World claims, in line cf length classes, you need to send your sample to them in the USA as well).

Thanks for this suggestion.

Yes, Paulus' testing's a byword for accuracy, too.

Sadly, their website seems to show the lightest braid they do is 6lb.

I need 2lb and 4lb (actually, 1kg and 2kg, which we all know are a bit more than the pound equivalents that IGFA call "US customary").

I suspect that once I've done some proper line testing I'll find I'm going to have to use fluoro as my main line.

I brought some 5k braid, thin as and spooled up a few reels with it, it is light enough for what I want to do.
there is IGFA braid, but I dare say it would be expensive just to be rated, would love to be able to use it for all my fishing.

Yeah, my usual braids are 4kg nominally on the labels - test on BOISC tester at anything up to 9kg, usually about 6 or 7kg.

You want some 1 pd crystal fireline,I used this years ago and it accounted for fish to 7 kgs, only comes in 125 yard spools and I joined 2 together, had it all off the spool quite a few times tested close to 1 kg from memory..insanely fine diameter

Be carefull with fluoro as a mainline,I used the fluoro made in lite classes for trout fishermen and it broke alot

What sort of rod and reel set-up are you using with this light line, over-head would put a lot less tension on the line?

Posted By: PJay
Date Posted: 11 Jun 2014 at 10:32am
Indeed.

I'm using

(a) a small Akios on a very light acid wrapped 6'6" Starlo Stix. The problem with this - and the levelwind-equipped low-profile baitcasters I've also been trying - is that very light softbaits won't carry the line out hard enough to get the spools turning properly, so I cannot get more than about 15m on casting. My softbaiting style depends on in-water time for the baits, so I need to get twice that and more. Just dropping the baits down, or livebaiting on the light line, yes, the little Akios is great. (But I'm being obstinate and want to catch my record on a softbait.)

(b) Symetre 1000s on (i) an Omoto 1-3kg light jig stick and (ii) a Tica of similar weight, but a bit heavier in the tip. These are actually working pretty well; I am running minimal drag and chasing the fish a lot whilst playing them, and then being very patient whilst directly above them. The 66cm snapper, biggest so far in this quest, took about 40 minutes to play and land in 8-10m water depth. The very light Fireline on the Symetres is not showing signs of wear as yet.

Yeah epic, I've got a Calcutta 200 with a Offshore 2-4kg rod - Spooled with 2kg mono. Biggest so far is 48cm stray-lining. I'm looking at what I can get braid wise that tests below 4lb, not having much luck. Is a bit of a mission softbaiting with light mono, tedious...

Thinking of buying a new light spin set up and and leaving the calcutta to stray lining.

Looking at a Stradic 2500, unsure on rod yet. What size jig heads and tails are you using? You setting it up differently to what you would using slightly heavier gear?

Date Posted: 11 Jun 2014 at 11:56am
BA and s c a l e s, this reply is going to mix up answers to questions from both of you.

I'm using pretty much 3" minnows, as the most successful of the little softbaits I've tried. The set-up is along the same plan as for my usual SBing, but not nearly as balanced as I would like because of the practicalities of dealing with big gnarly teefs and jaws.

I was using Nitro Bream #1 and #2 size, 1/12th to 1/8th oz jigheads, but as I started catching bigger and bigger snapper started finding they were actually straightening. I also found that the lighter fluoro leaders were breaking by being chewed too much.

I haven't yet got the Stren Coral Mist 10lb that Wayne recommended earlier in this thread, so using 15lb.

I have some 1kg Fireline, that seems to test about that (got a mate in England to send it), 15lb fluoro (definitely needs the braid doubled to hold it) and at present using a TT Lures 1/0 on 3/8 oz. I need a much shorter hook ideally, to get these little minnows to work properly, but cannot find one with the gauge I want.

Catching a lot of snapper in the 55-65cm range, need to get up about another 10cm; shouldn't be too hard at this time of year if I can get interest from the bigger guys in the 3" baits (and I think that will come....).

Biggest off the Russell Wharf with this set-up has been 54cm, but I was lucky to land it amongst the boats and the piles. Just a dumb fish, I think.

I've got a 2 - 4 kg rod (reel rods), 7ft 6, very soft action(even makes the little fish feel big).
The extra length is great for casting light jig heads, just wouldn't risk using it off a yak.
The reel is a 2500 certate, spooled with 4 pound braid.
I'm using 15 pound fluro (photo on previous page), very fine diameter for the breaking strain. It keeps the whole setup in balance for casting 1/8th an 1/6th jig heads.
Casting distance with this setup is very similar to my other soft bait sets.

Yeah, Steve, it's a lot easier handling them from the dinghy (even though I don't have a reverse on it): think of running down a gamefish that you keep off at an angle forward of you.

It's even easier from the kayak, because only a pound of strain is enough to tow you as long as you keep the rod tip pointed well forward.

I wouldn't even bother trying this from the Stabi or La Vista. I've driven Major Tom II for Geoff Stone when he was doing the same stuff, and that was blue air time, for sure....

I would be interested how that 1kg fireline will test. Would love to give that a nudge if it broke under, might have to try and get my hands on some.

Where do you guys generally track down your rods?

Seems like a mission.

Posted By: PJay
Date Posted: 11 Jun 2014 at 4:39pm
Yes, it's a mission; my Omoto I found at a retailer in Kerikeri, and at $87 it's been a winner. The little Starlo Stix I bought at WSL years ago, and I can't recall where the Tica came from - probably Kilwell.

Trout spinning/casting/non-flyrods are probably the best bet. Geoff Stone actually converted a fly rod to overhead guides and an extended butt section.

Fishabell in Christchurch (see Rods -freshwater on TradeMe) have some good kit, but it's more expensive. The Crucis that OWT from Sth Otago bought and discussed on another thread here ( http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/the-lure-of-bling_topic101577.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/the-lure-of-bling_topic101577.html ) could be good, but it's $295.

Now I think more about it, Scuzzymoto on this forum (Mark from Action Fishing Gear, I think it is, in Palmerston North) would probably also have something in the Sonik range that could suit.

Pjay, have you tried berkley nanofil? It comes in 1,2,3 and 4lb and might be easier to get hold of than the light fireline, much nicer to fish with too, I have some in 4lb and it's heaps smoother than fireline is

Thanks, makka.

Lots of very mixed reviews on Nanofil, mainly centring on its ability to hold knots (and some vituperative arguments about whether people can/cannot tie knots properly).

The more worrying comments - IIRC some on our own forum here - talk about the way it shreds up easily, specially in the very light classes.

Everyone seems to agree it casts easily.

Been thru a fair bit of nano fill a few years ago,its a very good line.
On paper its the best and in reality it is the best light line on the market in the light classes.
However, its ability to be cast hundreds of times isn't there ,it fluffs up and looses its strength breaking a little bit to easy for me.
Having to trim off a meter or 2 every so often and only comming in 125 yard spools isn't ideal.
I used this for trout and salmon in the sth and snapper up in the gulf.
Its ability to be cast great distances is amazing compared to standard fused braid.
Not for me anymore but ive still got some here somewhere in 3 pd if you want to try it P jay

BTW, in my kayak fishing I go for longer, not shorter length rods (need more length so as to cast from water level). Most of my kayaking SB rods are 7'3".

Pjay -wasnt recommending you a rod as such haha, someone had asked what people were using.

i read alot before buying it.asked a few questions on here for a light weight rod .none of the local shops carried the light braids or rods. shimano market these little rods as bream rods.

interesting about the nano fill as when i asked about it for a line to use freshwater spinning wasnt highly recommended as such .when reading it it seems like it would be perfect for freshwater.think this is the first thread i have even seen it mentioned

I haven't had any issues with the nanofil as yet, I use the fg knot to 6lb leader and its as strong as could be hoped for. 8 times out of 10 my knot at the lure/ jighead breaks before my leader knot.
Rod wise I couldn't find exactly what I wanted so I started building rods

Makka are you still in Aussie? I'm about to pop over there for work and was going to pick up one of the Daiwa Genration Black rods, have you looked at those and are they any good? I was looking a bit heavier than you guys on this thread, 2-6kg Wicke Weasel...
Cheers

I`ve just bought a couple of Daiwa`s ... 692LFS ...... mint rods , the grip and real seat is just perfect for one handed fishing and the guides are good too , very light rod in the hand ....... $150 each ... bargain ! Compared to the bekley dropshots 1-3kg .....well they are not even in the same room !!
Got them matched up to the new stradic CI4+ 1000 with .06 berkley exceed .... it`s just all perfectley balanced . !!

My previous light set up was a berkley dropshot 7`  1-3 kg with a stradic 1000 FI , This feels like a GT popping outfit campared to my latest gear .!!

My local poop dog , .. o`keefes` in Rotorua , though he had to order them in , took a day or two , which suggests that daiwa nz does stock them .
Some rods may wiegh light , but the proof is when you start waving them about in the air , then rods start to appear heavy and some ultra light , if you get my drift .

And before anyone starts smacking me down with a wet fish , i am not saying this rod is the be all to end all light rods ....... i`am just saying this is a good light line rod !!Big smile

Yes more than enough, use this and the 3 to 5 kg
3 to 5 is good for 4 pd braid, use this most of the time,1 to 3 kg rod mainly use 2 or 3 pd microfuse with light jig heads.
Use fine wire jigheads for decent penetration
The 2 to 4 is a good rod but ive had very little use out of mine, sort of in the middle

You don't have to spend a lot, I brought a Dropshot IM6 6.6mtr 1-3kg from Complete Angler a couple of years ago for $50.00 then picked up a Sennia 1000 for $50.00 and put 2kg fireline on it. It's accounted for plenty of good sized fish. Not to concerned about hook penetration, I use size 1 worm hooks in a very thin gauge which allows me to use small egg shinkers. Light tackle to me is letting the fish hook it's self because it doesn't feel the line attached.

That Omoto was the one that I've found to suit me best for this. (Unfortunately, I broke mine disassembling it the week before last: d'oh...$87 down the tube). The purple Tica I have with a similar spec I got on sale at $75, so this stuff is around cheap (no-one in Northland but me to buy very light graphite rods, I'm suspecting).

If you're running really light line, you don't want to be tempted to use line strength to set hooks. Use a fine enough gauge hook and it'll set easily, specially if you crush down the barb.

Sweet, I had a Omoto sold it, then realised I really liked it. Might have to track down another one.
Sounding more like $100 will be more then enough, I think I found my omoto on a half price sale for $49.

Spot on with not using the line to set the hook, but also would not rely on fish hooking them selves,a constant pressure with a fine gauge hook seems to always find the mark well and truly.
Another thing i do is sharpen the hooks every now and then ( or change jigheads) , they get blunt or the point can get bent if snagged

O yes, the fine gauge hooks' points often survive only one biggish snapper, get bent too much to trust (or straighten) for another go.

Well I broke the end of the tip off my brand new Crucis 1-3kg doing the same thing. The tip section is very very flexible, and I had developed the very bad habit of disassembling my rods by pulling apart with the jighead too close to the end. It was dark and cold so I couldn't see how close the jighead was to the tip.
Got away with that with the cheap rods for a long time as a solid glass tip will hold against the drag.

A few seconds to backwind some line out would have saved the rod tip.
I cut the end off the rod with a pair of scissors and found that it still worked ok. Caught a 2lb brown trout and a 4lb ish salmon on it.

Good news is that the factory replaces tip sections for $60 plus shipping. A bit of piece of mind. Apparently it's a common problem with these rods, though having owned one I can't see it being anything else than user error. Not blaming the rod, unlike some.

I plan to keep the old tip section as a spare.

Marine deals have Sienna 1000 for $55 and a Stradic ci4 for $270. Depends what your after but I brought the Sienna just to have a bit of fun with and have handed heaps of good fish on it. Light setups are great for gurnard and my little Sienna and 1 to 3kg setup is a weapon on the kaipara.

Yeah mate, will be here till Christmas at least.
Nice rods, I don't own one but a few mates do, great value for money, I haven't bought a rod in a long time, just build them myself these days.

Tried the berkley dropshot 1-3kg rods but found them very stiff and powerful for a UL rod, I now using a qauntum xtralite 2-6lb plus a daiwa 2-7lb both have soft whippy action.

Cool cheers guys. That sienna sounds like its in the budget. Not overly keen on spending hundreds on a reel to run 1kilo of drag.
I spotted one of the bbe softie rods. Was a 3-6 kilo but felt more like a 2-4, I'll have to keep on the hunt for whats round

If you have any interest in building your own rod a MHX S781 (2-6lb) or S782 (4-8lb) would be the go, perfect actions for light line luring, you could build one yourself for under $150, even under $100 depending on what components you choose

I thought I would post a detailed report on my new rod after breaking it in at the canals.

Down here softbaiting is largely for Salmon and trout in freshwater or estuaries, with or without scented baits. It's all the rage in the canals.

My own rod is basically a trout rod with an extremely soft tip. $280 here, though it can be bought in Aussie for half that.

Check out the pictures here:

http://www.sportsfishtasmania.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=14022

The action when fighting fish is semi parabolic, it bends most of the way to the butt, which is at least as beefy as my Shimano 3-6kg Aquatip.

The disadvantage of this type of setup are that I can't really get a strong hookset with the rod itself. Trout and salmon don't have the hardest of mouths, but I usually keep the rod pointed along the line (just slightly off) and use a combination of reel and rod to set the hook. Of course with the tiny jigheads I'm using the trout will often hook itself before it realises whats up.

The advantage of this rod is that I can flick out a 1/16 ounce lure halfway across Ohau C canal. When canal fishing the lighter your jighead is the better.

I really like the rod, even though I've already broken it. Can't blame the rod for breaking when point loaded. It still worked a treat without tip (I cut it down to the second to last section.) I do think that it would be better to try and order it direct from Aussie, or get the Lox Yoshi direct from the manufacturer for basically the same price as the Crucis here. The Lox and Crucis are made in the same factory. I like to support NZ shops, but money talks.

I've had 3 trout and a salmon on it. All were caught and none of them even looked close to getting away once hooked; the soft action really absorbs the fishes struggle.

Most of the soft bait rods I looked at in Twizel had similar actions: one was even custom made from a fly rod blank. All designed for getting the lightest possible lure the longest possible distance.

Hay Johno i got brought an offshore 1-3 kg and have fitted a symetre 1000 to it, the rods got plenty of power as have landed fish to 10pd on it, just need to get cabon tex drags foe it now to run alittle smoother. Try on amazon for the reels they have a good selection of shimano reels

Just a thought but a shorter EGI style rod might be alright for this application? Very soft tip sections with absorbing action and quite parabolic through the middle section (so as to absorb the pulse like bursts from squid).. I have an NS Black Hole EGI rod and know i can lift 1kg off the ground with it (rather bent at this point), have often thought about using it as a light snapper rod. The Daiwa Finesse Drag adaptor is also perfect for this application, making tiny drag adjustments is really easy and its super smooth..

Makka  thanks for the advice on the Daiwa Gen' black rods, I picked up the Wicked Weasel yesterday, along with a few other odds and ends, from Complete Angler in Flinders Lane. Thats a great tackle shop, much larger range of lighter rods and lures than we have here. I could have spent a lot more time and money there if I didn't have to come straight home!

After reading this post I decided to get myself a ultra light soft bait set.
It took me some time to get all the components together, and finaly today I got to try it outSmile
I did the first drift this morning with my usual 3-6kg set and my goto 5" zman i didn't get any takes, I looked over at my shiny new ultralight set siting in the rod holder and thought I would give it a flick just to see how it cast. Bang first cast with the new set and the first fish for the day. within a couple of hours I had a nice bin full of 40cm pannies, they certainly fight pretty good on the ultralight gearWink
I'm not sure about the Nanofil its very thin and the knot joining the braid to leader is strong, My only gripe with it is it seems to have bad line memory and lays on the water like a spring!Ouch
The 2/0 Mustard jig heads in 1/8 oz seem to hook up really well see the photo below.

My setup:
Rod Shimano T-Curve 1-3kg 7'3" (Thanks Rotate for the info, I went for the cheaper option)
Reel Shimano Stradic CI4+ 1000
Braid 300yards hi vis 4lb Nanofil
Leader 10lb vanish fluro
Jig heads Mustard size 2/0 weight 1/8oz
Softbait Zman 3.75" jerkshads.

Been seriously keen to try ultra lite gear so I recently I picked up the latest Synit motanza softbait rod from graeme its sooo nice and lite, its thinner than a bic pen just above the fore grip.
Im thinking a Sustain 1000fg would be the go but have put on my sustain 3000fg with 6lb stren for now visually it looks matching but I won't to run 2 ta 4lb braid so maybe a smaller reel what you guys reckon and money not a big obstacle at the mo lol.
spec's on rod

Motanza
X-Lite
722 length
1-4kg line
3-14grams cast weight
