Hi all, I am after some advice. I am keen to get into stickbaiting, but I am pretty confused with all this information running around. I am currently based in Sydney, but get home to fish around whangamata and auckland regularly. I do a quite a bit of jigging so I wouldn't mind a reel that can do a bit of double duty. I suppose my questions are around, what sort of solid set up would you recommend and also what size stickbaits for around mayor, aldies etc. Guys as I said, pretty keen to get amongst this form of fishing, but keen on some help. Thanks a bunch. |

Oh forgot to add, I am a pretty firm believer in buying the best that you can afford, so the budget is around $1000-$1500 for the set up. Thanks guys. |

Hi mate, I have an old stella 8000SW-PG and a monster mesh max rod. You can pick up that reel for about $800 now second hand (or find a retailer with old stock) and the rod is $350 new. The reel is suited to jigging (the power gear setting) however is still a good option for stickbaiting. I actually have a stella 10,000 spool with casting braid that I use for stickbaiting as it fits on the 8000 reel, and keep the 8000 spool with rainbow braid for jigging. Overall I'm not sure I'm hugely impressed with the action of the monster mesh but haven't tried a whole lot of others to compare. In terms of grunt it has heaps and is a good option at that price. You could pickup a similar setup within your budget reel $800 (in fact there is one for sale on this forum somewhere) rod $350 spare spool $150 Braid $200 Total $1500 I use the shimano ocea stickbaits which seem pretty good although I have changed out the trebles for doubles and singles on some of them and de-barbed the trebles. You can pickup high end stickbaits such as carpenters or maybe hitters but these are $100 - $300 a pop. The ocea stickies are $40 ea. It's an exciting way to fish when you get a good day! |

Hi Jono, I went through the same process recently. I already had a Stella 10k & bought second hand a Carpenter Blue Chaser rod which by the way if you can find one second hand in good nick buy it! I have also got a Shimano Ocea stick bait rod matched with a Shimano Sustain 10k which I used to use around the gulf but I now just use the carpenter. When you coming back to NZ? Hey mate. have a look at the new Shimano Saragosa I have only heard good things about them The retrieve rate is good about 102/crank from memory I've been looking at the 10000 on an ocea stick bait rod ------------- "AOTEALURES" Hand Crafted In NZ |
