Many guys seem to be using octopus skirts on the assist rig/hook..do you use them or prefer just a swinging hook?

Swinging hook, the skirts slow decent like a mini parachute ( not by much but they also  dampen the  action of jigs on the drop) and never in all my time in the water have I seen a small squid hanging around the mouth of a bait fish???
In short I think it's unnecessary.

Thanks Titahi.
I have used both with and without skirts...but not often enough to make a call either way.
I see online some guys do, most not...

I hear what above says but on a bad and slow bite day the extra noise and movement of the skirt may just save the day as we all know how frustrating it is when good fish are there but not bite, so I say it all helps with attraction.

 Catchalot riddle me this.....
If a swinging hook with out a skirt hits the jig and no none sees it.... does it make a noise?
Conversely if a hook has a small rubber skirt on it and hits the jig  and no one sees it ... does it make the same amount of noise?  me thinks answers in order are :
                                                                       - Yes
                                                                       - No

We have caught more fish using them on some days and less fish on others.

If the fishing is hard then why not try it as on the day it could make the difference

Skirted assists definately have a place in my jig bag

It's the whole teaser principle. Like trolling with the skirt over a baifish. I've never seen an octopus swimming at 7 knots with a baitfish up it's arse but hey.

Use both, have had days when no skirt works and on other days if you havent got a skirt on hook you wont but a bite.
And this is not fishing in never fail spots like Ranfurly and 3 Kings where normally anything works

Used lumo skirts for deep drops and night time doggies and seemed to get more hook ups with than without.

x 2

I use them on deep drops for extra lumo, have a look at a single lumo skirt in the dark at home and you will see that they definitely stand out.

Agree with other comments regarding catch rate, I catch fish with them and without them in mid to normal depths.

A couple of skirts on a boat full of blokes is always going to end in trouble.LOL

This is very much a personal choice they both work and both don't work on there days. If you use skirted assists all the time do they catch more? How would you know if that's all you use and vice versa. I personally use them as im a fan of being different to the bloke next to me. But that's just me, why not have both in your jig bag..... never hurts to try new things

a lot of guys use huge skirts which is going to drastically change the action of that expensive jig.  I always suggest going to quite small skirts.  I only use skirts for Puka bashing.
