Afternoon team,

Wet weather talk, I've regalved the trailer, put a new motor on, re wired everything and now the boat wears a new hardtop.

I've used Chatfield bases and drop in's run from the old folding top. Now I'm looking at permanent bases like kilwell, Douglas, Bonze etc..

For those that have fitted them to alloy cabins, what measures did you take if any regarding a backing plate?

I think they would be a good idea.

Appreciate any responses, in particular what you would do different if anything.

Cheers

The fold out bases are a game changer. I put a big Packer as I could on inside of my cabin to spread load and stiffen cabin side.
Those that say it can't be done are being overtaken by those doing it.

I used the Kilwell - but had extra mounting welded in. No complaints.
Can post a pic if needed.

Cheers, did you weld it in or just use the packer as a large washer held on by the outrigger mount fixings?

I will dig up a photo. They are screwed in place, then you fit the riggers as required.

There is a fair load on theriggers. I doubt the Kilwell bases could be braced enough mounted on gunwhales or cabin area. Usually that area is light plate - maybe 2mm. The base is a small area, so a lot of stress in a lightweight area. Which is why I had a mounting area fabbed up from heavier plate. And that load is spread over a much bigger area by tying it in with weld along all joins.
