Out this morning on the firth in my little quintrex, 13 metres of water fishing a 15 gram orange kaveman tungsten vertical. Just dropped straight down to the bottom, 7 good fish in no time most of the fish caught on the drop. Plenty of good size fish around at the moment with no throw backs.

Out to the Kaipara for the first time in a long while.
Launched 6.30am and shelly beach car park already full!
Fished not far from concrete marker in shallow - at this time of year we target the shallows - a slightly deeper channel nearly 3m deep from a big area of shallow flats.
Berley and half pillies , small jack macks soon had plenty of snapper up to nearly 60cm in a very short time.
For a bit of fun got the fly rod out - had a ball on snapper and kahawaii with a weighted pink and white fly. To top it all off i managed to land a pb snapper on fly of 58cm , 3.6kg - was a real handful in shallow water.
Had plenty by 830am so homewood bound , calm morning great times.

Nice one redfinger, those little channels on the flats are very productive. Concerning about that carpark being full so early, it seems that there are a great many people who are unaware of just how dangerous the Kaipara is....save yourselves and go east!

Weds 27/12/23 6:30 to 11:30am

Pretty slow day in the Motuihe channel area.  Legal fish caught (34 to 39cms):

Lures used, mainly Kaveman and Zman

The 30g silver/fluoro jig second from the bottom on the left caught the 2 biggest fish.  One ws caught with this lure when the rod was in the rodholder.  The other was hooked by hand as soon as the lure hit the bottom.
The 2 and 1/2" motor oil curlytail on the right caught the 3rd keeper.  Most of the other lures caught fish but they were all undersize.

interesting I’ve fished orange Kaveman micros in December with very little interest, looked like green and pink were the better colours so I’m going to try softbaiting with the old nuclear chicken.

I'm a big fan of Pumpkin Seed and New Penny but Nuclear Chicken was the major goto color on my last couple of trips

Tuesday 2/1/24 7:30 to 10 am

Fished the city channel for the first time this season.

Drift 1 near container terminal, 2 snaps, 32 and 45 cms and heaps of undersized.

Second drift all undersized.

3rd drift, changed position and drifted straight down the middle.  1 x 38cm gurnard, more undersized snaps.

All caught in the rod holder, biggest on the left hand lure below.  The other keeper snap and gurnard were caught on the Gulp shad.

Lures are ranked best to worst, left to right.

I'm interested in your comments about what's working.  That's why I used the Gulp today.

I used the 2 Gulp ones last Saturday, same 2 you have ,pink/green but undersize was all we got. Seems to be undersize in the inner gulf at the moment,  Did get 2 good size 420mm snapper which baked up well but for 8 hrs around ponui, dissapointing.

Silver lumo is always a go and as I mentioned before nuk chicken looks like it’s one of colours.

Have you tried the bleeder jig heads yet?

Friday 5/1, and it's good to be back out on the water after a while away.

Early-ish start at 6 am headed out to the Motouihe Channel.

Very quiet start drifting on the last of the outgoing tide. some bird action by the ferry buoys. I stayed away, the ferries weren't stoked and were sounding their horns at the boats fishing there

Changed spots to the west of Motouihe and started to have some action.

6 nice carrots and a couple of snaps to take home, all ok sized (snapps around 35-40cm)

Ended the day west of Bean Rock for a couple more snaps

No photos, but all had a selection of lures and softbaits.

No luck on the the Z-man softbaits, a couple of takers in the Gulps, (Nuclear Chicken)

Most damage was done on 60g Daiwa Kohga Orange and in second place a Ocean Angler Kabura Slider Candy Apple 80g

A good morning outing

Saturday 6/1/24  6:30 to 10am

I knew the fishing would be slow because the tide was small (2.7m).  I went to Sargeants channel because it usually has a strong current, but most of the time the drift was around 0.5 knots, peaking for a while at 0.8 knots.  There was a light northerly against the outgoing tide, and this didn't help.  Spent most my time in the channel between Motuihe and Crusoe Rock and got 2 potential keepers, 32 and 34cms.  This was a catch and release session, so wet towels and gentle handling required.

I carried on from last week using and losing a lot of Gulp 5" shads.  The silvery lures only caught undersize fish.  Here is the selection I tried, best to worst/left to right.

When the drift dropped to 0.3 knots I went round to the 31m hole south of Motuihe channel.  I tried the silver lures and then a blue/silver slider and lastly a yellow/orange slider.  It was hopeless despite some big schools of fish either mid water, or on the bottom.

I just been out this morning in my little 12 footer, started with Zman bruised banana curly tail but no takers, I’ve been doing well on the Baitjunkie 4in curly tails so tried a bruised banana but not a lot of action so I swapped over to baitjunkie motor oil in the 4in curly tail and it was all on, 2 fish at a time caught my limit in about 1/2 hour.

The Baitjunkie motor oil is a bit more of a new penny looking colour. Might try Zman new penny next time I’m out.

Only small fish on the micro jigs.

Saturday 13/1/24  6 to 9:15am

Launched Bucklands Beach and went straight to Motuihe channel.  2 of us used one rod each and fished mainly with Gulp Nuke Chooks for the first hour.  We used mainly 5" shads, but also 4" curlytails (not shown below), 4" and 3" minnows. We kept 5 nice eaters in the first 40 minutes, and then we had a long period catching only undersize.  Changing the lures didn't make much difference.  The silver/lumo metal jig got a few, but mainly undersize, and in the last half hour, the motor oil curlytail produced an eater.  The lures are ranked best to worst, top to bottom.

The bottom 3 lures got no bites at all.

The main take-out was that getting there early paid off.  The lures that did poorly were tried after the hot 40 minute bite died away.  These lures would probably have worked if tried during the 40 minute bite time.  Time to stock up on Gulp.  Even tho they are soft and easily damaged, they make up for it with the runs and hookups when the snapper smash the baits.

We kept 7 snapper from 34 to 38cms.  The 3 I filleted did not have flabby white flesh.

Out on the firth again this morning good productive morning got my limit in an hour. Baitjunkie motor oil still doing the damage but no takers for the Zman brushed banana on the other rod, so I swapped it out for a Zman bleeding banana and picked up some nice fish on it including the biggest of the day a 450mm snapper.

I’ve been using the new BKK jig heads but I wasn’t happy with the hook rate so I’ve swapped back to the lightbulb jig head with I think suits drop and drag better.

Hi Kandrew

Bit tragic, but this is my selection of orange jigs:

I saw a post by you back in November.  Are you still using the Kaveman 15g microjigs? They are at the top left of the pic.

Nice collection similar to mine, yep that’s the micro jig I use but I use the 25 gram more.

Couple of belated reports here.

Thursday 15/2/24  around 6:30 to 11am.
Fished the city channel and strated on my favourite side close to the container wharf, but very slow to start.  Did one very long drift from near 19 buoy all the way to the harbour bridge and caught several snapper.  Brought home 6 to just over 40cms.
Here are the lures:
Best was the metal jig in the rod holder.  It caught the biggest.  All the others caught the odd fish but wastage was high because they are all Gulps.

Saturday 24/2/24  6:45 to 9am
Same area, main drift was from 19 buoy to the naval docks.  Very slow, only got 2 keepers.  Gave up at 9 because the incoming tide had died, and the fishing with it.  Here are the lures.

As usual, the silver jig was best.  If you drop them till they hit the bottom, let say 3m of line out and jam the rod in the rodholder, they seldom snag the bottom, but they tend to catch the bigger fish.  Casting the Gulps ahead and giving plenty of lifts and jerks catches smaller just-legal fish and tiddlers.  I'm using up my old Gulp supplies.  Some of them would be 3 or 4 years old.  The little pink shine stubby bit is all you get back if you're lucky when the small marauders get to work.  More often than not the jighead comes back bare.

During the morning, the Shimano Catana overhead rod let the reel go while I had a fish on.  I gathered up the reel, put the rod between my knees and successfuly landed the fish.  The collar that screws down and holds the rod into the reel seat broke.

Any opinions on the

Abu Garcia Style Overhead Soft Bait Rod 7ft 4-6kg 2pc as a replacement?  $80 from Marine Deals.

Claims to have a medium-fast action, which is what I like.
