Well we eventually got out for a fish on Sunday after initially launching and finding the crank battery had died! so we had to drive back to Hamilton from Raglan and buy a new battery then head out again! We launched from Manu bay and headed around the points towards Ruapuke and managed to get two John Dory and 4 Gurnard in a few hours. I was pretty stoked to get the John Dory in so close and in only 13m of water Smile

thanks mate... im going to head out there next time and see if i can get some more! i we got then on half pillies on dropper rigs. I thought i might have caught one of a soft baits but only caught Gurnard on the softies.

Well, possibly, I have only just upgraded from a 12 footer to a 20 footer - so your gonna have to wait until my next upgrade! haha

What does everyone use for ground burley? I had a boat drive past the other day and off load some old KFC which they suggested using....Worked real real well....but they got the KFC off someone who worked at a store and I dont know anyone who works at KFC!!!!
Anything else around the home you can use? Spaghetti? dog food?

I have bought a blender and starting to blend up the fish left overs, seems a waste to throw them away. Got tubes from plastic shop which i freeze them in so fits in my burley holder. Still getting my head around how to easily blend it (work in progress)

I have started making my own berley - and it is really easy and it works a treat. In fact last weekend I had kingy's swimming in and around the berley pot that was only 1m below the surface.
 
Ingredients are as follows:
 
  • 500ml fish oil or canola if you cant get fish oil
  • 3 (at least) cans of 600g Ocean Fish Chef cat food or similar
  • 1kg of wheatmeal (Binn Inn)
  • 1kg chicken feed (Binn Inn)
  • 2-4kg of salmon pellets (any fish shop)
  • 1 tub of glitter ($2 shop)
  • Zip Lock Bags
  • (optional) leftover fish guts and trimmings
The Messy Process:
  1. Combine all the dry ingredients into a large bucket - pref with a lid as you can shake it about to stir it about
  2. Add the glitter to the Oil, then mix cat food and any leftover scraps into another bucket. Add water as required.
  3. Mix the wet and dry ingredients together - I use my hands as the feeling and the smell is orgasmic...
  4. Put the contents into zip lock bags - shape well before freezing
This should make a few days supply :)

Woke to a stunning morning on Saturday, by the time I 'd organised a crew it was blowwing 20knt NW.
 
Launched from Te Ngarere & headed up towards the Mahinepua penisula. My brother inlaw got soaked as we crossed from te end of the peninsula past little flat & out to big flat. Sat in the lee of the island & it was quite pleasant. Huge chop rolling past out the end of big flat but we were sweet.
 
Took a while for the burly to work but 40min later & it was all on. Kept 10 fish between 2 & 5kg in 2  & 1/2 hrs. Boat on the trailer by 2.30pm just as the rain turned up.
 
Surprise of the day was my brother inlaw outfishing us on softbait. 37m, at anchor with a 3/4 oz jig head. Thought he had no chance, but after a slow start just as he was about to change to smelly stuff 3 good fish in a row. The 5kg number pulled a heap of string to.

nice work TC. Sounds like you need to enter some of the fishing photo comps to get a waterproof camera!

Sunday 10/07 - 2.30 - 5pm
Well first post for this thread as an opportunity arose with my 5 year old daughter nagging me on Saturday to take her fishing!
With the forecast as it was thought it was a no goer but didn't seem to windy so thought why not, may not get an assist on the pass come up like that again for a whileWink Took my friend and his son out as well.

On leaving the estuary we spotted some birds and on following the general direction found a smallish work-up. On drifting through (was a quick drift) my daughter hooks up straight away, which was fun and gave her a bit of a work outLOL
The result:


Had another drift but concluded there was no snapper below and the kahawai were moving quite fast anyway so decided to go in closer next to the cliffs where we were out of the wind. On the way had a quick drift and picked up a pannie for the table.
We then anchored up and put the berley down but just got throw backs apart from this unusual fish my mate's son caught - any ideas?


Sun started to go down and was getting cold so headed back but on the way stopped for a quick drift over some sign, which resulted in 2 more snapper for the table - the largest (40) pulled some string for it's sizeBig smile

All in all a nice short trip and was actually calmer than most days i go out in the summer.....

hey mate thats a goat fish id say from the picture. always seem them spearfishing they sit on the bottom in schools lazy buggers by all account and dont mind divers at all

Yup, Goat Fish alright & yes they just lounge around on the bottom.
If you get a nice size one the arent bad eating, never caught one on a rod before but speared a few up north.
Fresh on the BBQ with some butter, salt n pepper they are yum.

I brought a $150 mulcher from bunnings. It eats whole kawhai, mullet, yellowtail, duck breasts, kina and mussels. I made 30ltrs on Tuesday in half an hour. Works a treat with a bit of modifying.
