Headed out towards Kawau yesterday morning. Stopped a bit South of Flat Rock when I saw dolphins, time was around 7:30am. Caught 1 pannie and a couple of throwbacks, slow jigging. Conditions were good so thought I could do better at Anchorite Rock - I was wrong. Pulled out the new Penn vertical jigging gear and tried to entice a Kingfish, drifting across Anchorite a few times. Gave up and headed back to Flat Rock - dozens of dolphins cruised in to play in the wake so it was a slow trip.

Tried slow jigging the reef the extends SE of Flat Rock but I had missed the bite. And then I snagged a jig and lost that.

No workups seen this time, the gannets were about but just taking it easy. Anyway, nice day out on the water never-the-less.

Good One Manaia for taking time out to post catch report, theres very few these days! Not sure but Iv'e always thought when theres pods of Dolfins around the fish go off the bite or bugger off? Seems to be wot happens to me on the few occasions they have come around my boat. Maybe it could of  been a contributing factor with your day?  Is it an old wifes tale? or is there fact in it, wot you guys Think?Beer

Hi Geoff,

Yes that's a good theory. I noticed a lot of big bait schools on the sounder where the dolphins were. I'm thinking the dolphins are smashing into them and that might be good for bringing the snapper in ? Or does presence of the dolphins scare the snapper off too ?

I think my mistake was farting around at OBC getting the boat ready. I was there at 5:30am - I should have just got going - that extra 30 mins of early morning bite time might have got me a decent catch like DIY did.

That's the trouble with the first trip out after hibernating winter. Everything's a bit rusty.

I think generally when there are dolphins around the birds follow them waiting for them to feed. Once they have rounded up the baitfish into a work up it’s all on then they move on. If I’m fishing the same areas but no work ups are happening, I will look for a group of Gannets sitting on the water and drift with them. Usually get some good fish as the snapper follow along cleaning up the debris. This can be a while later as it’s 40 odd metres deep.
On Wednesday I caught my fish close to one of the rises near flat rock. It usually holds fish, but they do move around a bit.

Launched Gulf Harbour 3pm Weds last. Loose plan was to head out past Tiri towards the 40m all the while looking for bird action. Bit choppy heading out but then glassed off (as hoped) after which with binoculars birds could be seen 'fidgeting' all over the place without anything developing. Found some dolphins that appeared to be spasmodically feeding and shadowed them for some time. Then one small surface work-up and maybe a dozen gannets diving in but lasted less than a minute, then back to nothing. We and one other boat were in the area but on flutter lures and soft baits, only throw back snapper. What seems to be missing (which was the same this time last year,) is the presence of Kahawai pushing the pilchards to the surface -  I wonder if they've been netted out big time? Wind came up with white caps - birds disappeared for view and be blind drifted for a while, again picking up a few marginal snapper, before bashing our way back into GH for around 7.30pm.

Bit hard to get out Geoff when 80% of weekends is Sunday: Westerly 15 knots turning northwest 15 knots for a time in the morning and afternoon. Then westerly rising to 20 knots in the evening. Sea becoming moderate in the evening. Cloudy periods, a few isolated afternoon showers.

Monday: Westerly 20 knots. A few showers developing.

Tuesday: Westerly 15 knots, becoming northerly 15 knots early. A few showers developing.

Wednesday: Northerly 20 knots, changing southwest 15 knots early. Rain, clearing.

Thomas managed a 45cm thyen it went from there. 35/45 home with 14. 3 for the neighbour, smoking 2 and rest filleted in freezer.

No milky fillets, fat on knfe, full of roe,all female bar 1. Released plenty of 31s.

Timed it right got back to ramp and westerly came up. Even fishing bait vs softbaits

Good morning out in the Gulf again today. Started at Flat Rock about 7 and then after a few hours headed out just past the cable zone and drifted for another couple of hours. 2 of us came back with 10 fish, half being mid 30’s and half being 5-6lb. No birds or dolphins out today and the fishing was pretty consistent throughout the morning.

Headed out 5.30am yesterday morning from OBC. Had a plan to anchor up off Motuora and target snapper with softbaits - squid vicious and grubs in new penny. I started fishing within the bite at 06:45. This plan wasn't producing - a couple of throwbacks and just pecks at the softbait. I think only small snapper.

So, I could see an armada of boats forming South of Kawau. And decided to join them. Reverted back to drift fishing using a large drogue against the 10 knot Northerly. Fished a new Shimano wonderfall (who thinks up these names ?) 60g slow-jig - very realistic looking thing. It quickly bought home the bacon - snapper - a nice 53cm, 41, 3 in the early 30's and a gurnard. That was enough for me.

Sorry my phone played up and no photo this time.

If you listen metserv one woulds never go to sea. Windy/predict showed sw12. Went to Kaiaua from 7.00 to 8.00  3 different parts of farm for no bites. Decision made Coro farms here we come. Moored between to charter vessels and deployed burley. There 30 minutes 7 in bin and charters went elsewhere, from what observed very little being caught. Further 1hr had our limit . Switched to chasing Kings as we had a good number around us. Couldnt land any,had a stalemate. where no movement next minute going gone, did the unexpected dive.

Snapper full of roe and went 33cm to 55cm

Got to Kawakawa bay ramp met by mpi,no issues.

Got too bait was Jack mac/SB,nothing caught mullet or squid.

Been a long time coming, but a few mates pulling out last minute and a few average trips on the yak was enough to pull the trigger for a solo mission on the boat.

Up early to avoid any traffic at the ramp ( half moon bay )at 5am I had my pick at pontoon and a park right out in front, I was heading for some rocks just past the noises and got there at 6am.

First time fishing this area, found some good spread out structure and set up a drift. Threw a softbait out and before I flipped the bail arm over it took off. Good snap on, got it to the surface reached around to grab my net and when I turned back there where 3 decent kings on his tail. In a mad rush i Scooped the snap, threw it, the net and my rod on the deck and grab the closest rod I could find . Dropped a big softie and watched the 3 kings fight over it. It was an instant hook up right in front of me. At this point I looked down to crank the drag and realized I had me mates $200 Sedona combo. Locked it up and managed to stop it from getting to the bottom, then followed a Mexican stand off with it just pumping and me to scared to apply anymore pressure. After a few minutes it came towards me and I managed a few quick winds before it turned and taught me a lesson. Bugger, all before 615am. The thoughts and frustration that followed looking at my stickbait rod thinking you fu#$ing idiot. Caught my breath and continued softbaiting with some really good snapper coming on board. Picked up 7 snaps all over 45cm with the two biggest going 55cm & 60cm. Back to the ramp for a stress free retrieval and a bit of a yarn. The yak has been knocked off its perch.

Yes I couldn't have said it better myself, the worst part is I had a Saltist in the cabin freshly rigged with 60lb fluro and stickbait.
I was definitely a bit flustered and rushing things. It was fishy as out there with dolphins spotted on the way out, sounder stacked with arches and first solo trip on the boat...... lessons learned.

Not long after, trying to iki big snap still a bit shaky from kingfish bust off, I took a jighead through the wrist. By far my favorite trip on boat in 5 years of ownership.
