Shot over to motoara nothing happening over there as well only picked up another 1. So very quiet today.

Like Keith, I generally only comment if I have something to say.

In this instance - thank you for sharing the intel. My son is coming over from Melbourne for a week next week and we will have one potential weather dependent day to get out - and Motuora was going to be one of the target areas.

We have had the best winter's fishing around Auckland this year and spring is turning out just as good. While shallow water stray lining was the go in the winter, the softbaiting is going off.

Today we headed straight out to Sargents for a softbait session, although we couldn't resist stopping to pick up a few Jack Macs in case softies didn't work and we wanted some dead bait. Low tide was around 5.00am and we were in the water at 6.00 - only one other boat trailer at HMB. We started drifting soon after 6.30 and by 7.30 had seven good snaps in the bin, nothing under 34 and one at 45. We pulled the pin soon after 9 with 10 in the bin. 5" Smokey Shad and Smelt did the damage.

13.09.2024
Magic dead flat day. Launched Buckland' Beach, caught some live Jack Macs and anchored up off Crusoe to try for a kingy. Nada but we did pick up a nice squid that held onto the live bait just a little too long and ended up in the landing net.

Then headed out into the channel to drift with softbaits and dead baits. Eight on the softies and a couple on the dead baits. Smokey Shad was the killer bait.

If anyone is interested, we are selling our lovely 2017 Surtees 495 soon as we are heading overseas for a long spell. She is a gorgeous boat fully kitted out with all the extras available at the time. It's hard to sell her but doesn't make sense to keep it. Live bait tank, drum winch, 75hp Yammy, cockpit lighting, clears.... message me if interested. Admin - delete this if not permitted.

Hi PJ, I don't think they ever left. We were out at every couple of weeks over the winter and usually caught 6-8 each time with many up in the 40's. It seemed like the usually migration out deep didn't happen so much.

Thanks for consistently posting reports, very interesting. I haven't been able to get out due to a combo of short weather windows and kids' sports commitments.

Do you mind sharing a little of your technique - are you basically dropping and dragging in the channel, or casting ahead with the softies?
Fairly heavy jigheads?
Interesting that you're doing well on 5" jerk shads in a natural colour at this time of year. A well known fisho posted a YouTube vid out at the Noises over winter a few years ago getting pannies of a similar size in 20m on the Smoky Shad (which was a big favourite of John Sutherland's in the Tamaki Strait back in the day). Looks like you're on to it! Wink

I've tried that Sargents area a bit, but usually get put off by the boat traffic heading towards Waiheke. Can be quite lumpy with the gin palaces going through, plus having to navigate through the anchored bait fishos in the fast current.
Good luck with the boat sale. Looks like a very tidy small fishing machine.

Hi Lester, I have been fortunate to be working part time with flexibility to move days around.  There have been a lot of short but very calm weather windows which we have been able to take advantage of.

I don't think our technique is too unusual. Obviously in the channel you need a big enough jig head to get enough on the bottom time to be in among the fish. Then it's mainly cast ahead and let out more line so it get to the bottom well before the boat passes overhead. Then keep in touch with bait but giving it a few flicks as you pass over. Main strike time is as boat is overhead. Then I lift the rod up with a few good jiggles and when the rod is high, I open the bail arm and let out a metre or so of braid, close the bail arm and lower the rod being careful to avoid tip wraps. The bait has then dropped to the seafloor and is about stationary. Often just as the slack is taken up and bait starts moving is when the fish strike. Let it drag for a few metres then repeat - if having trouble staying on the bottom then do this more regularly or upsize the jig head. Interesting, my wife often casts out to the side and usually catches more than me. I often try a few other colours, e.g. bruised banana, motor oil or atomic sunrise but not much luck.. Nuked pilchard has gone OK but not as good as the old smokey shad. We took a friend out a month or two back who had some old Berkely Nuclear Chickens and they were catching while Zmans weren't. Later on in the day, we came back to the Sarge again and this time it was the Smokey Shads working.

In anchovy season, the flea jigs did well in the Sarge as well but lately no interest in them at all.

In years gone past the Sarge was very busy with boats but not so much now, especially this time of year. Yesterday, not another to be seen. Same as Motuihi Channel - going back 15 years ago it was like dodgems trying to drift through the wall to wall boats. Now, almost none. Have all the fish gone from there?  We haven't tried it for ages but fishing there used to be fantastic.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Alan. Much appreciated.

It's interesting that you didn't have much joy on Atomic Sunrise, which seems to work quite well on snapper in areas with those invasive prawns etc.

I have tried the Church Bay side of the channel a few times with minimal success, and between Crusoe and Motuihe side (the bit called Sergeants on teh charts) which cost a bit of gear on the bottom. But I admit it was usually on the way home after having a go elsewhere without much luck, so not a good measure.

I once hooked a legal kingie under a marker near Crusoe on a big paddle tail softbait cast well past and retrieved down a few metres, but it wrapped around the mooring cable and straightened the hook.

Are you mostly in the 15-20m zone in terms of depth?

We have had days out in the channels near the Noises where there was a real difference between Gulp and Z Man - I think when they are feeding hard, they nail both, but when the bite is tough, the Gulp scent can get them going.

Hi Lester, Sergeants can be a bit harsh on the gear so you can't just let it way out the back and drag the softies like you can over a clean bottom. I have lost quite a few flea jigs there as well.  Be prepared to turn around, motor back over where the lure is stuck and pull it out from the other direction. That saves over half the ones that get snagged. The main thing is to avoid the area towards Crusoe where the bottom comes up to around 10m as that is really gnarly and you rarely catch fish over it. If you drift over that then move or keep the lures off the bottom.  There are a couple of deep areas around 20m and they sometimes fire in the summer but not so much at other times.

It's worth stopping by this area on the way back provided there is reasonable tide flowing. We have also done quite well in Calypso Bay in 7 - 8m at times.

Over by Church Bay can be hot in the summer, as can that whole area Matiatia to the top of Waiheke, but it's inconsistent for us and not a fav spot.

Great intel, thanks very much.
To be fair, I was drifting with my wife and boys after a picnic at Snapper Bay on Motuihe, so the gear was spending time on the bottom longer than I would like, as I tried to juggle their rods and help them, while keeping the eyes in the back of my head out for passing launches etc. We got a couple of pannies, which was exciting for the youngest one and all we needed on a non fishing-focused trip.
Like you, I also tried live baiting a few  years ago with jack macks near Crusoe (both drifting and anchored) but only got a big kahawai - which caused a lot of initial excitement. My dad had recently been bait fishing with mates near Park Point and one of them landed a genuine 20kg kingie on snapper gear, improbable as that sounds. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good!

I meant to say that squid was an amazing catch. There must be more of them in the weedy clean water areas around the islands than most people realise. Very few would target them, I reckon - it tends to be a night time shoreline activity in Auckland, with boaties mostly focused on snapper and the other main species. They are no sport catch, by any means, but very tasty and you don't need many to have a lovely meal.

Braved the Southerly and incoming tide, nasty little chop in the firth, managed 3 snapper out of ponui farm, just over legal.
Went for cooks tour of ruths passage/waiheke channel and came across 4 orca in a pod, didnt know they were until surfaced about 50m away,1 had a very strange dorsal bent in 3 or 4 different places, looked a cork screw.Busy thump tail and thats when we stopped hoping the would go.HaHa all they did was dive and surface further away, cloe enough though.

First trip out on the East coast for a while. Launched Gulf Harbour and headed out to Flat Rock for 7am. Had a few casts with the stick bait for nothing so dropped a slider down. Fishing was all on and I caught my limit in less than an hour with fish from mid 300’s to 750mm. Took a leisurely trip back watching the hundreds of dolphins and birds. Nice one.
Oh what a smasher - two eggs and a rasher!

Thanks for the report - couldn't be better news since I'm heading out that way tomorrow morning !

Looked like a break in the weather, been watching windy.com a few days ago, so took the day off work and pulled the covers off the boat Smile
