Hi all,
has anyone ever used to your knowledge a timber other than teak for something such as a gunnel and transom cap?
i was thinking of using pururi, which i have heard being called NZ teak.
it would be varnished. Any ideas?
And if not can someone tell me a supplier of 150mm x 25mm teak?
cheers - Justin

I would be surprised you could get sufficient Pururi.
If it had to be native, have a look at Totara.
To purchase Teak try Rosenfeld Kidson, BBS Timbers or Sout Pacific Timbers.
It is not cheap.
You might get some good straight old Kauri from some of the demolition guys. It will do your job.

Real pity we have to import specialty timbers when we previously had heaps. But no one replanted native forests 80 to 100 years ago and today we cannot use those valuable timbers anymore.

HI Don, yes i can get enough Pururi,
Do you believe Totara would work better? I would have thought it far to soft. And the same for Kauri. Native timber i don't have in short supply.
Thanks for the addresses.

Totara is likely to split - what about Kwila? I have some on my boat and seems to be good, price is not too bad..

Not a bad idea !!
But i do have access to the pururi - and still think it would be a great option. It may have to be a try it out job.

Totara would be far too soft as you say.

Pururi is awesome, Ive built some furniture with it, and sharpened lots of blades after working it..... It however will leach a yellow oil, that will stain your boat.  Heart Matai or Rimu  would be a better pick in my opinion, Kahikatea, is too soft, as is Totara, which will also leach oil.
If you could source and laminate  Rata or Kanuka they are also pretty hard timbers....

Black Maire? Incredibly dense and hard wood.
