Unfortunately I had a bad start. Was fully rigged and ready to hit the water when a police car pulled up and a young lady police officer asked me if I was coming or going. When I told her that I was ready to launch she very sternly told me that kayaking was not allowed. When I replied that she was not well informed and should check with police station she got quite official and told me that she did not need to as she was well informed of what was permitted under Level 3 Since I had checked it myself in the morning I stood my ground. It got very testy and I was asked twice if I was resisting. She then recorded my name and other personal details. I have no idea how far this farce would have gone maybe hand cuffs or taser; it turned pretty ugly. Luckily her male partner who observed it all at a distance phoned the station and then told her that kayaking was allowed. Without any apology she got back into the patrol car leaving it to her much more reasonable colleague to wrap up this uncalled for drama.
I have worked with the police most of my working life and have met many great people but like anywhere a few big egos give the force a bad name.
What concerns me is that they go out on compliance patrol without making sure that they know the rules they are supposed to enforce.
Had I not been so sure that kayaking was allowed I could have packed up and gone home and wasted my first great day on the water.
Did I catch some fish? Lots of kahawai I did not really want.
Cheers
