Is it the effects from "Nathan Guy" in 2012? to increase snapper size and drop bag limits we now have a bigger biomass of snapper but forgot to limit other species, before any one jumps up and down and blaming seiners for taking bait fish for export, remember we are doing the same for some overseas countries by importing their pilchards etc Ban on exporting/importing bait?

Fishing yesterday was hard - just 2 small fish caught. But they were very fat. So, last 3 times, caught 12 snapper in hauraki Gulf. all fat - so the thin milky flesh has gone.

I haven't had one for a while up here either BUT one of my mates got one the other day so still there just better. Most of the fish we caught Friday were not feeding hard, soft bites and just generally not interested but also not full tummies.

Yes totally agree on export and import ban on bait. Makes absolutely no sense other than a few bucks for those involved and is a very risky business from a biosecurity point of view with the potential to spread diseases. A ban on commercial  bait fishing would also greatly benefit the food chain and would be of enormous benefit to the fishery. No one would miss not being able to buy pillys .

From   NZ fishing community FB

I was reading an old book published in 1966 - 'Sea- Cockies of the Manukau'. Really interesting there was couple of paragraph's referring to spent milky flesh (opaque) snapper. Sounds like the milky flesh phenomena is nothing new and has been around for a lot longer than everyone has been suggesting???
Pg 58-59 Sometimes, we have met a jubilant, homeward-bound fisherman with a good-sized fish but one that is spent beyond safety; amateurs can't recognise a spent fish which, if eaten can cause symptoms resembling food poisoning. You can easily judge a spent fish's condition. He puts up a poor fight for a life not worth living. The carcase below the rib cage has fattened, specially near the tail; the skin is colourless, flesh opaque and fallen into jellied strings.
Not only spawned fish suffer in condition. We've found spent fish of several varieties all the year round. Even the gulls ignore them, preferring to go hungry. We always notice, too, that when the gulls beat us to the set net just as the tide leaves it, they know and go for the fattest fish first.

Out last week and caught 7 out in the middle of the gulf with only one being milky. Funnily enough its been a while since I have fished the area as I normally fish a lot closer in. I fish a few local smaller scallop beds and have never had a milky one. It does make me wonder if the collapse of the scallop fishery, in particular the so called "super bed" in the middle of the gulf has had an impact on the biodiversity on the bottom out there which would reduce a lot of the feed options for snapper.

just filleted 3 snapper and 1 was almost unfilltable the others were soft but firm enough, caught in 24m at a mussel farm so spawning cant be the problem, guts were virtually non existant.
