Just wondering if you guys know the approximate annual service cost of a new Mercury outboard motor? Mine is a 135hp 1 1/2 years old.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry the images are not the greatest quality.

This is my bill for the first annual service of my Merc 4-stroke 135hp. $898.
$591 in labour alone. Is this normal ? Just like to know what others are paying. Seems steep to me as there was nothing out of the ordinary with the engine and its only done 27hrs.

Parts look about right but Hourly rate looks a bit high to me, ring around some other merc dealers and see what they charge an hour.

I was going to say about $800. Here's an interesting thing. My last service on my Mitsubishi ute was at 30 000km and it cost pretty much the same as that - $800 bucks and a bit - I can't remember the exact amount. Let's look at what they did. I dropped it off at 8.30am which is when Roger Gill Motors in Pukekohe open their service dept. I got a call at 10am saying it was ready and I picked it up at 11am. It had been nicely washed. They changed the oil, they changed some filters (I don't know how I survived for years without a pollen filter in my cars), they changed the windscreen wipers, topped up the fluid and maybe ticked some boxes & plugged in a diagnostic device> Lets say the parts cost $400. that's a charge out rate of over $200 per hour. They did a good job of washing it, that's about all I can say.

I service my own outboard. I have had it serviced it in a shop 2 times in the 12 years I have had it. Once just because and again because an injector failed (which I diagnosed) and 'each injector has it's own software'. Ohh crikey! Anyway I have a very poor opinion of franchises especially when it comes to servicing costs. At least with my E-Tec they can justify the cost of the spark plugs, maybe my diesel ute has special ones Big smile

I'd love to see an expose (how do you make an acute accent here? - Stop showing off Smudge you can't even speak French!)
of the service industry. I have a classic tale from HRV but hey that's another story.

To sum it up Snappa1, no you haven't been ripped off. You have simply accepted what is the norm. Unless you have some real mechanical credibility you have no choice but to accept it. Unfortunately most blokes think they know stuff about motors but in my experience they don't really and at least a franchise service will keep your outboard reasonably reliable. Some exceptions though, a local guy has a Honda 250hp outboard that has been in to 'the shop'5 times after going into limp mode. That engine is about 2 years old and he bought it new. He fishes almost exclusively off the Manukau coast. Scary, but that is the nature of mechanical/electrical things. Intermittent faults can be the hardest things to fix. The service agents can't exactly charge for that and they have to recover their costs somehow. Guess what? They need to make a profit as does every business. They look at their out goings and set their rates accordingly.

I don't mean to be too critical on service places especially in the marine industry but it's hard for me to accept an $800 service that I could do in an afternoon. Not everyone has that capability though.

Ive had a Mercury 90hp 4 stroke serviced by Mikes Marine Silverdale. 2021 service was $598, seemed reasonable but I dont know anything to compare it to.

The 90 is smaller displacement than the 135hp, so I assume 135 service would be different.

So, all I can say - their service seemed good, and cost seemed reasonable.

Snappa1, I think like Kandrew mentioned the hourly rate seems a bit high, I looked at my last service bill from 16 months ago at the Mt Maunganui Merc dealer, the hourly rate was $100. Probably by now it is $110 to $120. Looking back at invoices
2016 - $78
2017 - $78
2019 - $90
2021 - $100
Wish my wage increases were up with that.
They had 3 to 4 hrs labour for standard service on a 115 Opti

Remember no oil in a opti, not like the 4S

everything seems to be getting very expensive these days - or perhaps its the value of the NZ Peso dropping...?
No disintegrations!

Hi there good folks,
I have the Tohatsu 50hp two stroke. First service was back at the dealer. When I inquired about getting it serviced by others, they tell me the warranty will expire.? My issue is the hour long (on a good day) trip to my “nearest” dealer and then back again. Write off half a day.

Interested in forum thoughts on getting a Tohatsu serviced by the Mercury agent here?

Is that invoice stating $147 odd + GST per hour?? If so, that's around 50% more than I paid an agent in January.
One of the reasons I went Merc is the maintenance free valve train which hopefully reduces service costs in the long run.
