Damn.

That doesn't sound too promising. Is there much reefy structure near the shore?

Hi all - looking for some advice am heading to ngakuta bay for a weeks holiday with the family from next Sunday and am taking the boat (smartwave 3500 30 hp) and keen to get out for a fish. Any advice on spots would be great - would love to target a few snaps and carrots if possible but won’t be able to venture too far from the bay. Any advice much appreciated.

Based Emslie bay at the pass, depends on wind mainly, and choosing tide that takes you rather than against it, probably rangitoto, jags, bottom of durville and the barrels, keen to do a drift round them, look interesting.
It will be torture. Thanks for info on the site. generally tend try obscure places to make it more interesting especially soft baiting. keen on trying jigs this year for a change.

What's happening up at the pass now, with the garage closed, is there any arrangement for petrol supplies, anyone know.?

Could be a mish having to go to Elaine bay all the time.

16 or so of us going up again in march about the 26th year in a row.

Cheers.

Cheers, looks like well get a small towing tanker, and a ute full of jerry cans, elaine bay is the 2nd option, bit of a drive. but closer than okiwi or Havelock.

Feel for the locals, but it might cut down the rape and pillage of fish stock at christmas time.

Heading down to the Marlborough Sounds in a months time and was planning on using a small 2.5m RIB with an 8hp to cruise around Pelorus and Kenepuru sounds and get me to some otherwise inaccessible campsites.

Have heard a lot about people kayaking around the sounds so I'm guessing it'd be pretty safe for a small inflatable.

Anyone have any tips for getting a couple blue cod or gurnard, or any experience camping around those ways?
Also considering chucking the wettie on if anyone can point me towards a good spot for spearing.

Cheers!

I'm being relocated to Nelson for work and wondering if it is worth towing the boat down there for a several months? (from September)

Is a 5.5m center console big enough for the outter sounds? (conditions allowing etc)

Doesnt sound great, no snapper yet, no cold allowed until late December, kings arent prolific or XXXL. What do you guys catch in winter/spring? Maybe I just got the wrong idea based on the comments above about snaps and the cod being closed until Dec.

Was it always like this? Im sure I heard amazing things as a kid in  the late 60s/70s

I LOVE the area and was on my end game list, but BOI and Tutukaka produce big snaps and kings all year round. Still the sounds is such a gorgeous area, its not all about the fish.
