Maori make up only 14.6 percent of New Zealand's population, but a staggering 51 percent of its prison population.

Therefore one may argue that our prisons are already 'Maori prisons' and the only missing piece is an investment from Maori (the ones not in prison) to inject their 'values'.

Personally dont think we need a separate prison system to achieve what they ultimately are trying to achieve.

my understanding is,there will not a seperate maori prison but rather a unit within to install maori values and not just for maori,it will be for short term sentences not lifers/rapist etc.

Nope.
From an article. "I support trying a kaupapa Maori prison - run by Maori, for predominately Maori, along Maori lines.
Apparently, indocrinating the inmates with all things Maori will somehow curb their wicked ways.
Strange really considering this is what is happening now in health, education, sport et al.
Seperate Maori this, seperate Maori that, all run along so called Maori lines and by New Zealanders of Maori descent.
Usually funded by the taxpayer with the usual suspects at the top.
Of course to cover yet another piece of racist separatism, they go on to say it would also be open to others.
These separatist policies are a direct violation of the Treaty.
Remember those immortal words. "We are now one people".
Ironically it is a few New Zealanders of Maori descent pushing for this seperation, in violation of the Treaty.
