My fairly recent Okuma Cortez decided not to play ball today. Had issues with it since I got it to be honest. Third Okuma reel I've had now that is basically rubbish after corrosion. Yet I have Shimano reels that are almost 16 years old, never been apart for a proper service, just CRC and handles/spool taken off every couple seasons, that still work well.

Ended up with this big boy not far off Pollock. One throw back snapper, a small Kahawai and a decent hammerhead.

Good to get out though. Been a while!

That is a decent looking gurnard from the harbour for this time of the year. Clearly you are living up to your name! I had a cheapie Okuma reel that was real smooth. Die cast aluminium gears that a big 7 giller gave notice to and I threw it away after that - a 2500 reel so i wasn't too concerned. I have an Okuma Tournament rod and for value for money I really rate that.

I've been using Okuma gear for a while now and can't fault it.  Smooth gears and drag  - and no corrosion issues.  But each to their own.

We got out over the bar on Friday.  I've been doing well on the kings lately but on Friday the water just seemed thick with kahawai . .  everywhere.  Usually the kings are among them but on this trip just couldn't seem to pick one up.  We stopped in the shallows ( 10m ) for a quick snapper fish at the end and caught 8 fat pannies within an hour.  We were heading back into harbour by 11:30am as one of our party had literally spent 3 hours green faced and wretching his guts up over the gunwales.  I eventually started to feel sorry for him so suggested we head for dry land.

Back at the beach we got chatting to another crew who'd had a very slow morning - they'd tried 30m, 40m and 60m and just couldn't find the snapper anywhere.  There's no rules in fishing but in my experience, unless its spring spawning season, I usually do better close in.

Jaxon, I'm not even going to look to see where those coordinates are. As for your hidden post that is even more inappropriate. Do I need to contact your school?

Think a lot of factors could have been reason you didnt catch snapper or much else.
Firstly massive tides,4.5 m at onehunga. Thats huge. Maybe lot of fine sediment in water putting fish down.
Normally this time of year plenty of snapper right through harbour. Intense bright light may have also been a factor.
Looked back in dairy. Few years back , mid february, with weeks of hot bright weather snapper vanished for a while, inner harbour. Thinking day after day of sun warms the exposed banks on low tides. Then incoming tides absorb the heat from the sand/mud and water becomes very warm. Maybe snapper dont like that. Also the endless sun and heat could possibly kill off crabs and other food snapper come there to feed on ,on the exposed banks. Just my thoughts. Maybe be correct, maybe not.. That big Gurnard would have made all worthwhile.

For sure! There was a lot of sediment in the harbour that's for sure. More than usual. The tides were rubbish but when you get a midweek day off with no wind I usually just try and get out regardless. A guy I spoke to who had come in from an early fish said it was awesome fishing. I was too late but then again ive also found the Manukau still can fish well in the bright sun, middle of the day which never seems to work over the other side.

Regarding Okuma again, I'm sure the top line gear is fine but the mid tier stuff I have had has just not held up the same way Shimano has. The Cortez I bought a couple years ago for example, the clicker stopped working after a couple of sessions. Now its completely seized. For comparison, an even cheaper entry level TRG200 Shimano reel from 2007 was my saviour on this trip😉 the thing squeaks and the drag isn't amazingly smooth anymore but it still handled a decent hammerhead and a horrible tangle £ the other Okuma I had was their bait caster (bait runner version) and it lasted one maybe two summers then shat itself completely.

One thing I really need to do is get rid of a lot of my rod and reel setups as I have too many to really look after and maintain.

I like shimano always been a fanboy  but Penn stuff mid range is very good. Fierce series in spinners and fathoms in overhead…well tested, now favourites.  Come out with me most times as go tos and have more expensive shimanos…need to get a marlin on my Penn 16vs squall this season on 15kg, sexy little reel.. leave the marlin x1 TLD 25 I love for dead in capability.

The fierce 8000 and fathom 25 star have accounted for snapper over 20lb and king over 30kg no problems respectively. Very lucky reels. I know Penn went out of fashion for non gamefishing, but still bloody near best or the best for dead and live baiting at affordable prices, fierce and fathoms are near or at top of class for those applications above…. And awesome value for money.

Another vote for penn midrange.
The cheap stuff is junk .I have had a gt and a pursuit  both retired early due to being crap .
I use a pair of squall 30ld off the boat as I love a lever drag for bigger snapper, smooth as, you only know the fish is taking line because the spool is moving no rod jerking up and down .
Surfcasting pennfathom15 squall 12 and a surfblaster all seem to be holding up well so far.
Used to use mostly shimano and ABU but they are more money for less nowadays.

Late start, slept in, on the banks just before 9am, glass calm conditions 2kt breeze if that. Just small stuff there
Went into the main channel on some of my outgoing tide marks in 9m, few keepers the with the odd undersize, very slow going. Plenty of the grass stuff getting tangled in the gear
Kept 6 snaps to 41cm, the best caught off Laingholm in close at the bottom of the drop off into the main channel in 7m
Prolly used 1.5kg all up of frozen squid & frozen pillies today

Worst fishing day I have ever had off the coast today. Between three of us we caught 4 snapper. One decent one at 4.7kg, one at 1.3kg and two we released. Add one kahawai to the mix, a small hammerhead and the smallest tope I've probably ever seen. Meanwhile in the harbour, Arron hooked this and handed the rod to his mate John. 15lbs

Out yesterday on a stunner of a morning over the change of tide. Fishing was pretty good, lots of bites, but we struggled to find decent fish. Kept a good Snap and some Kahawai.
Plenty of Orca about in the harbour near the tripod and further up the Papakura! At least 6 or 7 in 2 pods. Hunting in 2m of water, not the day to be a stingray! Very cool to see in the inner Harbour. One just lay on its side with fin sticking up for minutes at a time. Another has the top of its dorsal fin missing.

Bloody fussy though. They wouldn't take any of the bait or lures we tried..... Wink

So awesome to see them in our harbour so often these days. We regularly see them in the channels, large pods all hunting in pairs. Surely it's a sign of a very healthy harbour! I am convinced the fishing is extremely difficult when theyre around thoughTongue

The one with missing dorsal must be a busy orca, wouldnt be too many around,we saw one simular or same out east about 3 months ago in a pod of 6

It makes you wonder what fish is brave enough to have a go at an orca

That Orca with the buggered dorsal is named Ragged top .
She's been around a while .
First met her the first time seeing Orca close up back in 2008 .
