Hey Skoti

Over on the Waitemata I'm having some success with Gulp 5" nuclear chicken shads.  They're soft and expensive to use, but they work.  Just ordered 10 packets various colours from Paul's Fishing for $11 each, pickup.  Might last me a week or 2 hopefully.

How does the tidal range be 300mm different between Onehunga and papakura channel/cornwallis?

8.58h 3.2m papakura

8.40h  3.2m cornwallis

8.53h 3.5m onehunga

times are insignificent but hieght 300mm difference

For the same reason one harbour varies from another or the west varies from the east. When I figure out what that reason is I'll let you know Big smile. I did try to find out many years ago what that reason was but it made my head hurt.

I could tell you , but I'd be banished to the East coast for eternity .

But I will say this , when I plan a trip out , I only go by Onehunga tide size and time .

So even Skoti the Manukau snapper legend doesn't know! But he is right I'm sure. Go with the Onehunga tides and heights. Best Fishing IMHO is 3.7 to 3.9 metre highs and bigger tides in the evenings on an incoming tide.

Going to give it a go Monday,Up towards the Airport,drift towards Smudges area by the tripod,see if I can find my way in ropers and finish off or up from Grahams beach. By then tide should of turned for incoming.Beats workingThumbs UpI believe my Nephew hooked a marlin of some sort out over the bar in 50m but didnt stick

Went out from Te Toro about 7.45 and a bit of a wind against tide chop down to Grahams beach area.There 3 minute and wife had 2 in the bin and I a kahawai,finally got 9 snapper then the weed arrived about 11.00,caught something on my s/b but the little 6500 baitrunner couldnt hold it so there goes about 300m of 30kg braid out with a knife.Went out to the tripod and wife hook a brozie and cut the line,stuff this we are going,Pulling up the anchor and just about sh#ts myself as the shark passed again ,rough guess 2m+bronze on top but pale underneath. Back to Grahams ended the day with 19 snapper 35/50 range 1 gurnard 36cm and 2 kahawai for the smoker. Plenty of jack mac/yellow tail around. So pretty good day for us east coasters.

Nice work Paul, that's not a bad catch at all! I don't recall ever seeing as many sharks in the harbour as this year. Well ok I do, but it is still a good year for sharks.

Even marked the spot on GPS,OK Thomas did before xmas as we got a few on the incoming. Pretty happy "smudge" neighbours feed.When the weed arrived the bites stopped and when we returned a hr later current eased off and no weed.. Thomas wants to go out Friday

Once that red weed gets on your hooks you wont catch a thing. Clear every scrap off as often as you can and it is surprising what you will catch

Went out from blockhouse bay yesterday, stacks of sign everywhere, amazing. The wind got up 40mins later making it unsafe on the kayak, had to paddle back in = skunked
Went out from Armour bay this morning, nothing in close from the mudflats to the main channel, few undersize at bottom of the drop off in 8.5m
Over on the banks at bottom of the drop off in 9m got fish in the bin 33-35cm on fresh macks & squid, then it stopped around 930ish. Buggar all sign for the entire sesh compared to yesterdays fiasco
Very quiet out there, no frisbees or teeth caught
But I did a fumble as well - iki the snap, bled it, went to rinse it off, the snap kicked a bit, I lost grip & it sunk out of sight.... piss me off eh

nice work Bananaboat. Used to fish those same spots years ago when I lived in Titirangi. It's almost a completely different harbour over that side in terms of what works and what doesn't, compared with the Waiuku side.

Same here! learnt so much about fishing the muddy on the back of the Te Tau bank in my earlier days. Some days you could go through a kilo of squid or more in half an hour or so. These days we just got bigger boats and drive further.

It has been a cracker of a Kingie season in the harbour for us this year. Caught another couple today on the jigs plus a feed of snaps from the Kura depths.

Excellent job FlawOne.  


I decided to fish the change of light on Monday evening. 


The incoming tide limited my options to the Pahurehure inlet, as I didn't want to paddle against the tide to get to the harbour.  


I haven’t fished the Pahurehure inlet in over 10 years and it didn’t disappoint. Conditions were windy but the sea was relatively flat. 


I found some really interesting ledges and marked them for future reference. 


There’s still plenty of small snapper around, but caught some good pannies for breakfast for Waitangi Day.  I noticed a real high fat content in the snapper.  There was so much fat around the rib cage and fillets.  It’s gonna make excellent eating!  Water temperature was recorded at 20.5°C.  


I also fished the change of light on Waitangi day, but unlike Monday, I returned with nothing.  Fishing was really hard!  The yellowtail that I did catch and use for bait, attracted nothing but hammerhead sharks.  The water temperature was slightly warmer at 22.5C.

Got out today. Tried jigging over the slack ride next to a popular marker in the Papakura but not a bite. I don't really have the technique down and forgot the sea anchor too. Drift was a bit fast even at the top of the tide. Thought about anchoring but my technique was enough to laugh at so went to a couple spots to try get some table fish.

My fairly recent Okuma Cortez decided not to play ball today. Had issues with it since I got it to be honest. Third Okuma reel I've had now that is basically rubbish after corrosion. Yet I have Shimano reels that are almost 16 years old, never been apart for a proper service, just CRC and handles/spool taken off every couple seasons, that still work well.

Ended up with this big boy not far off Pollock. One throw back snapper, a small Kahawai and a decent hammerhead.



Good to get out though. Been a while!

yeah Okuma reels are rubbish , I will never buy another . They look the part but are full of low quality metals . Daiwa are the best reels for the money in my opinion.
