Went out over the bar yesterday. Crossed half out going, quite choppy for a little boat.
Went out to about 25m, pretty quite. Decided to go where I last caught fish, in close by the gap.
Got 8 snapper and 3 gurnard.
Crossed back over on the low tide, was a lot better than the trip out.

Ok Manukau fishos need some advice.  Soft baits.   What size jig head and which softbait to use? Do you need to add extra weight ?? hopefully Sunday. Thanks

It really depends where you will be fishing. If you're in an anchored boat you'll be needing a lot of weight. I think I would try something like a curly tail or similar with a lot of movement rather than a jerk shad and fish them slowly.

Sliders work well too, 40 to 80g in orange have worked well for me.

I have been trying real hard to take east coast SB over to the Manukau.
Only times with some success has been across the tides on the side and up on the banks, up in gutters... and throwing out into KY for the smoker.
Which is a bit better than the long term local have been telling me when ask.

The plan is very much wind dependent, low tide 9.30ish,go across to a scallop bed by cornwallis, and then with tide still slackish have s/b session(no bait allowed)and try the nob(9m rise)we stumbled across between big bay and destruction gully, about 1/2 way from memory. neither of us have really given s/b a serious go. more likely if no wind to have a drift on incoming and back by 1.00pm ish. need Sunday afternoon nana nap.

Busy session yesterday: This was our first fish and taken within 2 minutes of the hooks hitting the water.

Headed straight to Hamiltons Gap area ( 12m) as it had been alive with birds and bait last weekend.  Yesterday it was barren.  Searched around a while looking for sign on the sounder and eventually decided to drift until we found some fish.  That didn't take long.  Chucked down the pick  ( in 19m ) once we started catching.  Had a steady stream of solid snaps, gurnard, kahawai and trevally over he next couple of hours.  Interestingly no baitfish and not a single shark!

Went out this morning launched cornwallis before low tide fished papakura channel near mako point - nada just undersized snap and gurnard tough going tried moving no better and dreaded red weed is showing up too. Seems this area is tough going over low tide?

Out over the waikato for  feed yesterday around the 30/35m marks.. bar flat.
Just outside the bar a lot of sign, so dropped a couple lines for 1omins  while setting up gear...nothing.
Moved out to the 1st spot that has work well upto now...
Maybe seasonal thing, still got to build up history...
Thu did bring in 1 34cm and high 40s snap, and got hit by a good sized shark... then another.
Moved further out and up the coast , another spot that has worked consistently..  espec the last trip couple weeks back.

Again quiet, then over the next hr pulled in another mid 50s and a low 60s, and a large gurnard.. then hit by another 2 sharks.
1 just on 2m...snapped my rod on it at the side of the boat, it rolled and clipped it with its tail.
Back in over the bar by 6:30pm  dead calm...
Fillet up, clean gear all done by just after 7:30..
Wash salt off the boat today.
Good day out good company.
PS tested my solo bungy launching cord...(another thread) worked like a treat.

Good morning out wide yesterday, over the bar at 6am first fish on board not long later, limit of snapper and a couple kahawai, and packed up by 9am. Amazing conditions, lots of curious dolphins. And limit of scallops on way home a added bonus. All snapper seemed lithargic and did not really fight until well up off the bottom, often hooked but not showing until lifting rod up, saying that they were all in really good nick and very tasty.
Why choose either diving or fishing when you can do both. Besides crayfish tail is very good bait!!
