Good work Smudge. For CG we always ask those on trailer boats (especially) to put PFDs on before we town them.

I’ve towed a couple of boats personally and then barged them to the ramp pontoons etc. Shelly and I have it down pat now and the last boat commented that we knew what we were doing … offered to buy me some beer but I quietly suggested they would get value from a CG membership instead and to put the beer cost toward that.

Got the kayak out this morning for a quick mish 6-8am, low tide was 746am then usually the wind starts to get up at tide change
Started off in close, zero bites, plenty of weed getting caught up in the gear
Went to my mid channel spots, not much on the sounder & zero bites... weed caught up in the gear again
Water temp mid Dec was 22.7 today was 20.5... all these sou-westers don't help aye
Around 7am got 2 stingrays then some fish for the bin plus undersize throw backs.
At 720am it was all over, zero bites
Beautiful conditions out there, prolly 2kt the entire sesh today from the west
At tide change it started to get breezy... as expected
Frozen squid for the trev & fresh mullet for the snaps
Just 2 other boats out today around French bay

Finally managed to get out for a quick fish last Friday.  Popped out for an hour or so from Te Toro.  The wind was a bit more than the forecast 10kn which made the Waiuku channel a bit choppy with southerly winds and incoming tide.  Anchored up on the outer edge of the channel and an odd thing happened, I dropped the anchor and waited for the line to tighten but we didn't move at all.  The southerly wind pushing the boat seemed to exactly match the incoming tide and we just sat there.  Decided to move to the inner edge of the channel to get out of the wind a little and anchored up next to crab island.  I only managed one gurnard, but that was enough to boost my wife's tea from steak to surf & turf so she was very happy with that.

The wind hasn’t been kind over the Christmas break.

I finally managed to get out on Friday morning. I love my early missions, so I was very surprised to see a boat in the harbour.

As I paddled out of the Pahurehure inlet, I could hear yelling and yahooing in the distance, curious, I paddled towards the boat, and lo and behold, it was James and Theunis. James just caught a very fat 6+kg snapper. That bloke is a fish whisperer! His work ethic and fishing ability is out of this world!

After a few photos and a brief chat, I made my way further out.

The tide was still in full swing. I anchored and straylined with fresh mullet and was soon greeted with a fat snapper.

Fishing was quiet for me after sunrise, and I soon paddled further out and waited for the tide to go slack. I soon deployed the softbaits and in quick succession hooked up with 4 very nice snapper.
I lost a couple of stonkers beside the kayak. Absolutely gutted!
I’ve been very stingy with my jigheads, and I utilise them to the fullest. But over the last 2-3 trips, it has come back to bite me. I believe the hooks were not at their sharpest, hence the reason why I lost these bigger fish.
That’s my theory anyway…lol.

If you asked me a year ago, “Do softbaits work in the harbour?”, I would’ve slapped you silly and replied, “BITCH, softbaits never work in a harbour!”
But the last year has completely challenged that stance.

I came back with a good feed. I couldn’t catch a Kahawai or Trevally. I did see a couple of big sharks near the terminal which was beautiful to see.

James caught some bloody big fish this morning. And he kept reminding me over the VHF lol…legend.

The sea was like glass. Can’t wait to do it again.

It was a crazy day over the coast today. Marlin & YFT everywhere. Heaps of reports on the radio of multiple hookups. I've never known anything like it. We didnt get a thing though

We stopped at 30m for a quick limit of pannies up to 55cm but most were smaller than that.

In the harbour around the Huia Banks there were huge kahawai work us, all little fish but I cant ever recall seeing such big workups in the harbour.

Left Te toro 8.0aam and headed down to my mark off Grahams for nil, then went inshore to 4m incoming tide,1 baby hammerhead 1 baby 150mm gurnard 1seagull that got my softbait,1 shag. plenty of undersize but we did mange a feed. got this lot about 11.30 just as wind started to wind up. Only one other trailer Te toro when we arrived. Home just after 2.00pm

Not ideal but better than trying to fish KKB.

High tide 5.00pm Wednesday so might be back for another raid and small 3.4m tide    Wife is determined that we return after I dropped her fish of a life time, got it 1/2 in net and quick flick of tail it was gone with her hook, maybe 12/14lb. Comedy of errors bouncing around bit saved my coffee.

Wednesday: Southeast 15 knots, turning southwest 15 knots in the afternoon. Partly cloudy. Southwest swell 1 metre.
