Jenkins this morning on the banks, very slow going with patches of sign showing up on the sounder
For about an hr or so, plenty of weed getting caught up in the gear making it for zero fishing with only 1 fish in the bin
Moved out deeper & got a feed, plenty of sign showing up, all hard down in patches & no weed in the gear
It dropped off the bite an hr before high tide with just baitfish on the sounder
Best snap going 47cm. All keepers were on squid baits with about 7 small stuff going back
The car park was full today, plenty of kayaks on the water as well... lovely conditions out there, but stinking hot

Nice work Bananas! I  went for a drive down to Te Toro about 2 hours ago. Only 5 boats out. Would be a good evening in the shallows for sure!

We went down to the Paratutae 50m hole today with high hopes of getting some fish for Christmas. It was pretty sloppy to start with as the tide was still running in and with it the swells . Within a few minutes though I had a good fish on a black lucanus jig laced with a squid strip. I reckon it might have been a good kingi , based off the speed of the runs , but the hook pulled out after about 20 min and only 10m or so under the boat. As that was happening , my mate Ant was into a good fish as well , It came up a little easier and I actually saw it a few metres under the boat . It was a massive snapper in the 7 to 8kg sort of size . Unfortunately the ceramic eye had popped out of the rod tip during the fight,  and as the fish did a last lunge,  the line parted on the sharp metal guide . I had been about to grab the line to handline it in the last few metres but has hesitated for a second in case it was a bit rude . by this time we had drifted maybe a km . We sped back up to to Paratutae island to have another go. The signs were good. Terns flew past with anchovies in their mouths and the swell subsided a little as the tide slowed and turned. I lent Ant a rod as I'd bought 8,  to be ready for anything. Within minutes we had both hooked up again but lost the fish due to the line breaking or bitten through  on the flasher rigs . I had hoped not for sharks but that is what we both hooked up and pulled in next , They were Tope or School sharks around 30 to 40kg. Bugger . We moved to Waterfall bay in an attempt to avoid more sharks and costly gear loss. But no , more sharks came up or bit through. Another move to the 10m rip just off the Huia ramp saw us escape the sharks but barely a bite so one more move to just 100m off the rocks at Huia point in 6m also produced nothing , so we finally had to concede defeat and packed it in. The scenery was great , a bit of action , good catchup with a mate over a couple of beers but yeah I guess that is life and  fishing , it doesn't  always go your way. I've fished Paratutae hole for over 20 years now. It used to be a never fail , sure fire bet for a bin of good fat hard fighting snapper, but this is the second time in two trips that we've been sharked , I hope they haven't decided to move in permanently. Anyone else have a better report from the area? Cheers

I launched in the early hours of Sunday morning. Conditions were a little choppy due to wind against tide. But the wind and sea settled by midmorning.

I started straylining with fresh bait, but all I caught were undersized snapper. When the tide started to go slack, I switched to softbaits. A steady drift was perfect for hooking up to some nice fat snapper.

I trolled a lure for ages to try to hook into some Kahawai to no success. I haven’t caught a Kahawai in months! Usually they’re so easy to find and catch.

Paddled a good 12kms today. You certainly work for a kai in this kayak fishing game.

Fishing is certainly firing up in the harbour. I’m glad the holidays have arrived, as I will spend time targeting only kings and trevally.

Have a safe and Merry Christmas and good luck.

I've spent a fair bit of time on the water the last week or so and it's been less than productive . . . until yesterday.

Earlier in the week I spent a long day chasing kings - got up early to get some live baits and spent a day losing every single one of them to sharks.  It didn't seem to matter where I moved in the harbour, they found me.  I tried deep and I tried balloons on the surface.  It was mostly 1 and 1/2 metre long hammerheads that bite the tail off and disable the bait.  Though I hooked a couple of bronzies also.   It seems to be a common theme on the posts here of late and I've not known a season like it.

I've also spent a lot of time towing lures which avoids the sharks - both inside and outside the harbour.  But the usual spots just haven't been firing for me.  A few undersisze fish but nothing to keep.

Anyhow finally managed a better fish yesterday.  Caught on a rapala x-rap deep diver, outside the harbour.  So it was sashimi for dinner yesterday and the remainder is  in the smoker now!

It kind of sounds like thousands of sharks have pushed the fish up the harbour and into the shallows .

A quick trip yesterday morning off Titirangi
Straight to the banks in 7m, got 1 for the bin on the first drop, then nothing but throw backs for the next 1/2hr or so
Also, not much current at that tide stage, only needing 1oz sinker or less to get to the bottom
Patches of sign coming thru but not that much, didn't really see any snapper sign come thru
I went into the main channel on a new spot that I just found that looked really good on the sounder as well as on the surface. Plenty of snapper sign coming thru plus big patches of other stuff from mid water to just below the surface
Got some more for the bin plus throwbacks within 30mins straylining squid & frozen macks with 1/4oz sinkers.... just keeping the baits a little off the bottom.
Then it pretty much ended there about 3/4hr before low tide as the current slowed right down..... just bait strippers happening
Thru out the sesh, the nor wester would come thru & chop up the surface then drop off leaving the water almost glass calm, actually, making it ideal conditions
Funny thing tho, compared to just 1 week ago in the same place, seemed like every man & his dog, be it boats or kayaks, there were heaps of them everywhere, yesterday, just me & 2 other boats spread out miles apart.... the difference a week makes aye
On & off the water in just over 2hrs.... keepers 33-36cm

Wow, sure is a different season. Some great catches too. We've had success out off the coast but haven't really had a crack in the harbour.

Tried something different for Christmas, and was on the water before sunrise. Slow start with lots of small snapper. As the tide changed it got even slower, so we pulled anchor and drifted back out the Papakura channel with low expectations.
Well holy **** were we wrong!!
An hour and a half of the best fishing action. Landed 4 60-65cm Kingfish, 2 huge trevally, some donkey size kahawai and even a few good size snapper! A pretty large jig (pink and blue) was taken by kingies, kahawai and the trevs.
Stacks of sign, warm 21.8c water and a great selection of fish. Tried a couple of other spots for that elusive legal kingfish but no luck.

Crazy good fishing! Merry Christmas indeed

Slept in, got out just before slack tide (1.5hrs late) I knew it would be stink being late
Caught plenty of snaps, undersize to 31-32cm, didn't keep any, then it stopped at tide change

Anyways, I saw these 2 guys heading to the banks, while I was out there
An hr later I saw them coming back in - using their oars. They were about 500m off shore when I became aware of what was going on with them
The breeze was kicking in then dropping off
I stayed out & watched them for about 45mins.
The current picked up & saw them trying to keep the boat straight for the ramp, plus when the breeze kicked in, it kicked up a short chop that was breaking where they were, then it would calm off
There was another smaller boat further up, heading back in. I waved them down then those guys towed them in
Back at the ramp, they had no life jackets or vhf radio... either flooded motor or it just died on them.... I didn't ask

A question for you guys
I have a VHF & PLB on my person
If that other fala wasn't around to assist
What do I do when doing a radio call
Do I just call up on ch16 & say what ?
I did my vhf course years ago with coast guard but have forgotten what to do for something like this... apart from a may day call out
Any suggestions

Bananaboat, personally I'd call coastguard on vhf16 and relay the details you have to them of the said vessel i.e. location, description of vessel, number you can see on board, and the circumstances as you described. If more serious, I would put out a Pan Pan call with those details and highlight that you are the observer. That would alert all craft in the area and should keep the radio channel clear for comms.

My thoughts based on vhf training 40 years ago. May be we can get input from CG (Phantom Menace (Anthony) please come in here).

Call C/G on ch 16. When they reply you will need to make them aware you are on the Manukau so you can communicate through right repeater channel. Same channel for bar crossings.

Yeah, what Keith said would be the go. Initial call on VHF channel 16 with details and then either CG radio ops or Auckland Maritime Radio will talk to you. They may direct you to move to the working channel for the area or may keep Comms on 16 ( calling on 16 first then following instructions to move channels would work for any location in NZ).

If you don’t have a VHF on you then you can call on 111 (the police often task Coastguard eg. a bystander saw 2 people unable to right an upturned JetSki 700m off Stanmore Bay on Christmas Eve, called Police and the Hibiscus boat got tasked as they were by Tiri. I wasn’t on the boat but the skipper contacted the rest of the unit and asked if anyone was nearby so I went down to the beach to help carry the 6 yr old ashore etc. )

I should also add - don’t hesitate to call - everyone would rather have an initial call out then be stood down rather than have someone hurt etc.

I towed a boat in a month or so back. No radio. I asked them to put their lifejackets on before the tow, which they did. IMO you're crazy not to have a VHF and a CG membership.
