Awesome day out on the harbour with some stunning conditions in the morning. Plenty of seal pups on Puponga point with a few rock fisher folk getting a bit too close... great time to take tour kids past in a boat for a look.
Fishing was slow, the gurnard bite was patchy and tentative when they were about. Managed half a dozen carrots to save the day but it was tough going. Time to change something!

Hey mate, I used to launch here before I joined the Waiau Pa club ramp. I wouldn't use a 2wd ute, it gets pretty boggy at dead low and a bit soft on high in the softer sand. Some others may do it but I only used 4Wd. I would imagine the grass parking would be pretty boggy after the constant rain over summer, autumn and winter too.

You can use the concrete ramp a hundred metres prior to the yacht club though (the one as you come around the bend by the golf course into the car park at Clarks).

The other option is the free ramp at Waiau Pa. All concrete, a little slippery at low but depending on the size of your boat you should be fine.

Te Toro is all good. The only problems there are on the very big tides at dead low, when it is possible to drop your trailer wheels off the end of the ramp. It can also get a build up of mud right at the bottom of the ramp but it didn't look too bad last time I saw it.

Planning on heading out on the Muddy again tomorrow for the first time in a long time, I haven't used the Waiau Pa ramp before, is it open for public use and what is the public parking like. I will be joining the club but haven't yet.

Also any tips for where the fish are at the moment?

Got out both Wednesday and Thursday mornings for not much, first times out for a long time on the harbour so need to work things out again.

Wednesday: started in the papakura channel edges with only a few small kahawai after a few hours, got bored and headed out to the heads to try for an early kingfish with no luck there. Managed to pick up a large kahawai on the drift on a ledger rig, called it quits when the wind came up.

Thursday: beautiful morning and very foggy slowly cruised out and dropped anchor on the edge of the bank in the waiuku channel. Managed one Gurnard after wading through a bunch of very small snapper. When the fog lifted we moved over to ropers. We fished for a couple of hours with only one small hammerhead to show for our efforts.

The scallopers are out in force at the moment, and we saw fisheries both days out checking on them which was good to see.

I've heard a few reports of good sized snapper in the 60cm range being picked up in the heads area so will be trying up there next time out.

Jenkins bay this morning 730am, paddled straight to the banks, started in 7m, few undersize snaps then a trev for the bin
Went to bottom of drop off into the main channel in 9.2m, another trev & few more undersize snaps going back
About 9am sat in 5m, prolly half tide down now, couple snaps coming up 30-32cm size went back, then 2 snaps for the bin with another trev
Best baits - fresh kahawai, frozen squid, dirty old refrozen mullet & thawed pillie got the best snap of the day
The entire sesh was very slow going, few bites / throwbacks then lots of nothing happening, then repeat itself
Water temp 15.7 - 16deg, trevs of 35 38 40 & 35cm snap plus the other one
Saw about 5 boats out there & just the 3 of us kayakers out there, glass calm sea with 2-3kt breeze...... was lovely when the sun came out...... on & off the water in just over 3hrs, good day out

You know you've raised your kids right when you get a message at 9.00am. Dad, I'm going to finish early and take the boat out (it's a family boat so I only need a msg like that).  It was a little windy at around 15 knots westerly, but Arron knows the harbour well.

Anyway I finished work at 4.30 & driving home it's obviously the wind has snuck on up to at least 20 knots - still from the west.

I stop off at Te Toro and there are no boats out. I cruise on home, just a few km from the ramp, no sign of Arron so I figure he pulled the pin. Go inside and there's a bowl of ten very fat scallops in my fridge. Arron and his girlfriend had been and gone, getting 34 scallops in their last drag - it's always the way when you only need a few more.

Boat washed, in the garage, some scallop gut put aside for burley plus Arron had already gone. More steinies for me I guess. Nice. I was going to take a break from fish tonight after 4 straight days of eating snapper, trevs & kahawai. So it's lamb chops, salad and scallops for my wife and I tonight. Scallops are very fat and plentiful right now if you know where they are
