Great fishing on the Muddy yesterday afternoon in stunning conditions as the tide turned. I fished the turn of the low in 9m up the tail of Ropers. Caught plenty of carrots on my specially prepared triple thawed freezer burnt KY baits. Plenty of terns and garnets working the deeps between Puponga and Mako on the way home.

Nice one FlawOne
Ive met a few ppl who swear by the refrozen freezer burnt dirty very old kahawai baits doing the damage, I must give that a go at some stage

Been out 3x since last trip report 8 Jul
Heaps of undersize snaps small but legal trevs skunked twice which I antisipated would happen prospecting around new unfamiliar grounds, namely Laingholm banks & Little Huia.
Some very interesting water & structure about that could be very interesting snapper straylining in the warmer months
Ive also been getting a few rig sharks of late, all released (read that as skunked)
Spoke to a fala who mentioned the same thing, if you can get them on squid baits, they are starving & should never be caught on anything other than crab / cray / shellfish baits he said
Reckons because no commercial fishing for them between the Heads & Puponga pt..... all new info to me

Been a while between posts... been out Sunday week ago(huge tides) and Saturday just gone.  In general, the fishing has been hard work (if you can call sitting in your boat drinking coffee hard work), with a few small snapper around and some reasonable kahawai. Even had a small kingi on the flasher rig which got the heart pumping for a couple minutes.
Squid, straylined pillies and old kahawai seem to be working equally as well.

Not a lot of luck on the gurnard front for us - 1 or 2 decent ones, but they're not something reliable yet. We don't use burley, maybe that's the secret?
Tempting as it is to prospect a few new spots, we usually get a mixed bag at our lucky spot. I find the best fishing is 1hr before or after the turn of tide, so dont want to "waste" the opportunity of good weather and a good tide! Getting a good weather window feels like its been tricky of late.

Have still managed a feed every trip out so can't complain, and it's always great to be out on the water regardless.

Friday 18/8/23 7 to 11am
George & I launched Mangere Bridge and headed to the Wairopa channel near South Titirangi.  Target species was gurnard.  I read the Fishing.net "How to" for gurnard and tied a ledger rig with a 1m running rig below a sinker.  We hooked 3 gurnard and landed 2.  Also kept 2 small KY and 1 good sized KY.  Had strayline baits out hoping for snapper but nothing much on them.  We ran out of berley, which slowed the fishing to a crawl.  Tried moving twice, but only a medium sized gurnard at the last spot.  Main baits use were "bonito", mullet and KY.

As Seahunter said, it was hard work, but we enjoyed the coffee.

We had 3 other boats join us but they caught mainly KY.

The harbour has been a little slow which is not unusual for August. I read that article. I agree with most of it

Yeah, everyone has there own tricks and techniques when it comes to fishing and all must be employed when targeting the infamous Mighty Manukau Mud Marlin! If you want snapper you gotta go deep this time of year.

Indeed! It would be a sad day if we knew everything. That's why fishing with others and in different situations is such a good learning experience. You see things that you've never seen before or have never even thought of. Lot's of things you don't think will work for no other reason than you have just made up your mind it wont work. From memory that article talks about using squid bait. Long ago I decided it doesn't work in the harbour. I do know it works well for gurnard from off the coast. So why doesn't it work in the harbour? Because I just made my mind up it doesn't work! No other reason but clearly it does.

Yes, we fish deep for snapper at this time of year.

We made the most of a very slim weather window yesterday morning.  I knew the forecast was for a northerly wind blowing 15knots from midday ( and no doubt accelerated as bit came through the heads) so we set out just after low water and crossed the bar. - Incoming tide, and low NW swell meant it was completely flat.  We had intended to go out deep and hit the magic 55m mark, but the wind was already rising so we stayed close in - very close.  8m.  There were plenty of birds flitting around and it soon became evident why - kahawai everywhere.  Every drop we got nailed and for the next 3 hours I dont think the rods sat quiet in the holders for more than a couple minutes.  Unfortunately it was almost all kahawai and a few big tope.  Luckily we picked through them and managed to score a few good snapper.  We didn't stay out too long as I wanted to get back into the harbour before the tide turned and messed up the bar.  I think we ended up with just the 5 but they were all real healthy specimens.

We did make a short stop at waterfall bay to look for seals and I have never seen so many.  There must have been at least 20 of them hauled up on the rocks.  Very cool.

Nice catch. I think we're going to see more and more seals in the future.

I've heard the Gurnard fishing is a bit hit and miss. My mates been out twice lately in the shallows and has been catching a few Snapper (legal pannies) and no Gurnard. Bit odd for this time of year.

The crazy season can only be attributed to two things smudge.  It's either climate change or the war in Ukraine, or perhaps both, take your pick. Ermm

It could be The Warriors exceptional year that has upset the balance of probabilities

I admire that theory. Although I am a Raiders fan...if the Wah's win the comp we could very well see Marlin and Tuna being caught in the Waiuku channel?!

There used to be a red marker post not far from the boat ramp at little Huia.
It's not there anymore, does anyone know the general location where it might have been
