You will catch hiwihiwi off the coast too. In close off Hamiltons gap is a hot spot Big smileI'm guessing there will be plenty north of the bar wherever there are rocks.

Did you get many spiny dogs or just tope?

No spiny-dogs - just hammerheads and tope.  Which is a shame as the guy I was fishing with wanted a spiny dog to eat.  But then I haven't actually caught one for a long while now.

Shocked

I reckon I could catch a spiny dog anywhere, anytime. I hate those things. I will try most fish I catch but have never like any shark type fish apart from eagle ray fish cakes and elephant fish. Next time I get one I'll try it. I keep spotted doggies for a friend who really likes them but wouldn't keep them otherwise.

Fine by me Smudge.  The main reason I check the forum is to find out where the fish are ( or at least where they have been lately ) so happy to be part of that process.

FINALLY got out in the boat yesterday. Been a long time since I have been able to time a decent weather window.

The last 5 outings, including two of which were in Rarotonga, resulted in zero fish, so I was really hoping to break that duck.

Launched just before high tide into pretty undesirable conditions. The wind was well and truly up by the time I got my butt into gear.

Anchored up in 4.5 - 5m in my favorite carrot spot. It was bloody hard to keep the lines out the back and tight with the wind, swell and tide all swirling around. Managed to catch an average Kahawai and a small Gurnard that I didn't realise was hooked. It measured a whopping 32cm so I let it go to grow larger and hoped for some bigger models. Fishing was super slow and neither mullet or bonito was producing on two outfits so I decided to brave the chop and shoot over to Ropers.

Found a likely looking hole near the start of the main channel and only managed one other decent Kahawai. Packed it in and decided to get home before dark and ensure the boat was cleaned up and the two Kahawai dealt with for fish burgers.

My trailer winch rope broke at the ramp...signs of minimal boat use in my opinion therefore I need to ensure I get out at least once a fortnight.

One positive from my hard fishing lately...I have had to catch and eat my Kahawai, therefore I am taking extra care in gutting, gilling and bleeding them 100% and consuming as soon as possible. I'm really starting to enjoy this fish a lot more as a result. It is super versatile...sashimi, smoked, fried, crumbed....and when fresh it's just as good if not better than a lot of other fish I have eaten lately.

Seems we had similar results, we went out on Sunday for a couple of hours, the weather was pretty dismal, we caught 3 kahawai between the three of us. You are correct though , having minimal fish makes you more appreciative of the humble kahawai. I made some raw fish and a fish omelet for the accounts dept as she hates raw fish. Both turned out primo.

With the kahawai, we deep fry them in a cast iron pan on the stove, they are done in 50secs tops
Its best to chunk them half thumb length size (1.5 in x 3/4in)
Use fizzy drink instead of beer (too good to waste beer) flour salt baking powder for the batter
Honestly, hand on heart, nothing compares to kahawai done this way, its the best
If the kahawai pieces are any size bigger than the suggested above, to us, its not as good eating, as the kahawai gamey taste is over powering & no matter what you use as a dipping sauce or other sauce, its not the same
If deep fried to the chicken nugget size as above, they come out perfect & do not taste like strong kahawai taste at all

Your food snob mates that turn their noses up at kahawai done in any way for eating, will be easily fooled by these deep fried beauties.... honestly
We enjoy a feed of 2 decent sized kahawai this way, buggar the deep fried chips, just deep fried kahawai home made tartare sauce & other sauces to your liking does the damage
Kahawai is yummo !!

Good to see people talking up the poor old kahawai. They aren't too bad at all.

True that Smudge.  I've been experimenting with a new fish cake recipe and kahawai is the go to without doubt.

Essentially it's a combo of potato, tasty cheese, some red onion and coriander + salt & pepper (all to taste and add a bit of fresh chilli if you feel inclined). Mash the spuds then add an egg and the trick is also some breadcrumbs at that point to bind the base together.

Cut the kahawai into small cubes and add to the mix (2/3 base to 1/3 kahawai seems to be about right) then lightly flour, dunk in some egg and then a layer of breadcrumbs and shallow fry in some oil for a minute or two 'till golden brown - don't over cook as you'll wreck the fish.

Still a work in progress but pretty damn good. I always bleed the kahawai by nicking the arteries just inside the gill-plates and the prep is to remove all the bloodlines and red meat from the fillets - a bit fiddly but the flavour is outstanding if you do that well and the catch has been bleed, iced and well-cared for in the interim.

Here you go....

Oooo those look delicious Grunta. I usually just crumb mine in smaller fillet sizes but the above nugget size idea sounds bloody good.

What dipping sauces do you guys like ? Can't beat simple sashimi with soy...but for the deep fried pieces I'm a sucker for anything with chilli

Fished about 8 different spots yesterday. Launched at 6am and came in at 4pm. Caught one Kahawai, two spiny dogs and one tiny snapper.

That is all.

In a side note I can confirm that Bananaboats Kahawai nugget recipe above is amazing. Tried it last night and even those in the family who don't like fish devoured them.

That looks tasty as Grunta! Fresh kahawai cut into cubes and coated in panko has to be one of the easiest tasty treats I know. I only do easy

Out there doing it Gurnard. So many sharks in the harbour right now. i was telling Arron about how the big 7 gillers will be in the harbour from now until November. We get lots of little ones this time of year. He said I've never seen one over a meter long. That changed yesterday hehe

Had a mate who did really well on Saturday up the tail end of Ropers in 9m over the turn of the low tide. We unfortunately were stubborn and stayed in an area of the Papakura that has been producing well for us and only got few Gurnard....

Got out for a quick fish today. Launched at Waiau Pa around lunchtime and fished the last couple of hours of the incoming tide. Found a spot away from the hoardes of boats on the edge of the Waiuku channel.

Didn't take long before the first carrot was caught and on ice.

My partner and I caught four Gurnard, releasing one as was legal but a tad small. We also got three Kahawai which were turned into raw fish.

Smudge sent me a message with a Watercare post from facebook regarding a sewage overflow near Onehunga....anyone else hear of it?

There was quite a bad spill, that affected a lot of the harbour.  The reports don't seem to get the attention they should, if you want to check water quality before heading out this is the best web site to look at Safeswim it has the state of water quality over all of Auckland.
