We got out yesterday morning for a quick practice run ahead of next weekends Grunter Hunter. First time out on the Muddy for the new boat and she handled it like a champ.

Fishing was patchy at best which I put down to the full moon and nothing to do with our lack of skills... managed 4 Gurnards overall, 3 from the tail end of Ropers in 4m and the largest at 46cm and a touch over 1kg coming from the back of the Te Tau Bank 5 mins from the ramp.

Now the crew knows the expectation we just hope that Smudge has made ample sacrifices throughout the year to ensure fair weather for next weekend! Bring it on boys!

Got out Sunday before the rain, got a bin full of kahawai for the smoker, best went 55cm on topwater gear around small workup at the convergence of the channels, got a bunch more straylining on the purakau channel edges as well as lots of smallish trevally on sliders with a tiny bit of squid, kept a couple for sashimi. no gurnard surprisingly but probably getting to the time of year to drop the hook and bait sizes down as there didnt seem to be many small snapper.

Weather looks very promising!
Based on previous grunter hunts... what size gives you a decent chance of winning the top prize?

Any fish 45cm or more is a possible contender if it's in good condition. Occasionally we will see fish at 52cm or a tad longer. Top twenty weights are usually 920g up to 1.3kg although we have had one or two bigger than that over the years. Smaller fish are well worth weighing for the $500 Average Weight prize

Went out from Armour bay yesterday, stacks of kahawai everywhere, I went from the middle of the bay to Lawry pt
At low tide, went into the channel & drifted baits on dropper rig, snagged & lost gear, marked it thinking was a mussel bed, anchored on it did baits for more kahawai, gave up.... kept 4 kahawai released heaps of them, like 12 plus, zero snaps
Water cold, temps 12.6 - 14.2 on the incoming

We launched into pea soup conditions yesterday in search of the monster carrot to bring us fame and success in the grunter hunter comp.
Was a bit of a hard day for us requiring a bit of moving around to find them. Started up the tail of Ropers with a 100 other boats and then moved onto the banks of the Papakura with the incoming tide.
Unfortunately the SW wind came up and meant attending the weigh in was not an option this year.
Finished up with 10 good Gurnard the largest going 1.05KG. Awesome day out with the lads!

Another stunning morning on the harbour today, headed over to Ropers again and picked up these. Most were caught in the first couple of hours after high tide and the biggest went 44cm. Also got 1 x 33cm snap and lots of small KY. On the way out there were a few patches of really thick fog then clear around them, weird.
Oh what a smasher - two eggs and a rasher!

Hi BB, I caught x7 decent gurnard in the same spot where I met you a few weeks ago. One of them was the 4th heaviest (1.2kg) in the grunter hunter competition. I used a standard dropper rig and freshly caught kahawai for bait. Most were caught one hour before slack tide. Thought I would share this as I recall you stating that you found it difficult to find gurnard. Cheers.

Thanks for the intel Hookski, congrats for 4th
What a difference a day makes eh
I was in shallower like 2m sussing out different spots for next time, prolly too much reefy structure which is better suited for snaps
I used kina mussel berley that time..... reckon not needed as it attracted too many kahawai, also used fresh mussels that I prepped a day early, bonito seemed best that day followed by mussels, salted pillie, squid last

Cheers. I don't use burley at the spot anymore as it attracts far too many kahawai. Still catch a few though for the smoker and bait. You will definitely land some good sized carrots there. Good luck!

This was this morning’s effort, we got 8 up to 43cm from 8.30 - 11.30. We only started to get KY towards the end and the carrots seemed to come through in waves throughout the morning. Wondering whether they tend to move around in shoals?

Nice work DIY, you are getting pretty consistent results in that carrot patch of yours. We decided to skip Ropers this morning and head straight to the main course on the banks of the Papakura with the tide flowing in. It definitely paid off with a good haul of plump carrots into the mid forties. We too found them coming in waves but there were plenty of KY between.

Did my good deed for the day and towed my mate back to the ramp too £

Good one Flawone, not sure if it’s a particularly good season for carrots or I’m actually starting to get a handle on them. I’ve fished Ropers a fair bit now so it’s about time I prospect a few new areas. There are a few likely looking spots in those side channels off the Papakura channel further up.

Spent the weekend doing some much needed maintenance on the old tub. Haven't been fishing in NZ for a while as I've been in Raro for a couple of weeks. Looks like there haven't been too many opportunities to get out fishing but here are my thoughts based on my last trip on the big muddy from 3 weeks ago:  https://www.fishing.net.nz/fishing-reports/saltwater-fishing-reports/west-coast-manukau-fishing-report-29-06-23/

Bloody good on the gurnard there guys.... awesome

Fished kaitarakihi bay today, completely sheltered from the predicted northerly breeze
Kept 3 kahawai small snapper & a trev, missed other snaps, mouthing baits, pulled lots of string then fell off.... reckon needed smaller hooks with smaller baits in winter, me thinks
Lost some fish at the surface before netting them
Released 2 small rig sharks
Clouds came over & did wee wees on me for 15mins twice
Best baits frozen squid & frozen pillies
Salted bonito pillies, refrozen squid, both fresh mussels & salted mussels were all stink today
Very slow day, weather report lied as it was 3kt the whole day, I could have gone onto the banks looking for gurnard instead
Got my fix anyways

Thanks Bananas. We were out this afternoon. Quiet day on a great afternoon. We dodged the showers somehow and managed 2 gurnard and one snapper. I got absolutely monstered by sharks. I released a12 kilo or so tope at one spot and didn't have a chance on the other four. I was on 10kg mono so I would have expected to land any tope but these were much bigger. Unusual to get bronzies at this time of year but thats what I think it was

Shot out across a flat bar yesterday morning.  Decided to try deep first and headed out to the 45m line.  Things were promising as we had a snapper within seconds of the first drop . . . . but that was it for the next hour.  Despite big schools of jack-backs beneath us there was nothing else biting.
So we changed tack and headed close in - very close - 10m.  Started off having to wade through a plague of sharks - big and small.  A couple of hammerheads and then tope after tope.  I must have lost 5 or 6 rigs before we eventually had a run of decent size snapper come through -  which was good timing as it started tipping down with rain. I don't mind getting wet when the fish are biting.

When it came to gutting the fish I found 2 small hiwihiwi in one in them.  Cant say I've seen this before and assume this snapper must have been foraging in the harbour recently.

Came in at high water under blue skies and can honestly say it felt like a small window of summer heading home beneath the shelter of the Waitakeres.  Spectacular!
