Might be a dumb question but does anyone keep their catch alive in a live bait tank instead of killing and using it immediately?

I would have thought keeping fish alive would keep it freshest.

For the sake of discussion I'm thinking mainly cod/gurnard/smaller snapper

How long do you want to keep them alive for? Most live bait tanks are just that,maybe keep 1/2dz lives going but keeping eating fish,wont have the room required.Fish need to move

Yeah thats not quite correct.....

 Fish like cod and gurnard can lay  patiently still, Snapper can also force water over their gills without the need to swim forward, it just comes down to flow rates to replace the required amount of oxygen in the water. Ive kept eating fish in the livie tank, helps to have a window so you can easily keep an eye on their health.

There was a thread on this subject a couple of yrs and consensus yeah /nah.  Going to kill,do it straight away and put on ice,waters warm at moment,maybe winter but when you 23c water bring fish up from maybe 18c not going to like it.

It's not bad thinking. I do it with crayfish when I'm lucky enough to get one. I'd be tempted to do it with sedentary fish as mentioned above, but I think free swimming fish would get too stressed out being sloshed about in a livebait tank. That said, fish must be pretty stressed when caught on rod and line anyway*.

*I'm talking about physiological stress here rather than emotional stress, although that may apply too, who knows!

Whilst I have no evidence either way, I'm with MB on this one.  I suspect the distress on the fish caused by it being contained within the live bait tank will not enhance its eating qualities.  Iki jime and on ice for me.

You would need a bloody big live bait tank ( I struggle to keep lives alive)if you have a good day out there.
Keeping fish alive just delays the setting process you get from an ice slurry.
Killing and bleeding a bunch of fish on ya driveway at night after a big day out on top of all the other clean up duties you do when ya get back sounds like a real drag.
